Hello Charlotte, Maybe the following information will help you decide whether the KUMMANs buried in the Bergen St. Cemetery were relatives of your KUHMANNs. In my files I have this marriage: 25 May 1892 at St. Augustine's RC Church in Newark Frederick Joseph LUCKING, son of Jos. Lucking & Wilhelmine Fritze; b. 12 Apr 1870; "Coalyardbesitzer" and Julia KUMANN, daughter of John Kumann, Baden & Stephanie Staudt.; b. 10 Nov 1872. Julia's family was counted in the 1880 Census in Newark: John Kuman [sic], 59, Germany, taylor wife Stefanie, 52, Germany, keeping house dau Stefanie, 17, NJ, keeps house dau Louise, 13, NJ, at school dau Julia, 11, NJ, at school dau Tilly, 8, NJ, at school son John, 20, NJ, Japaner The marriage record says that John KUMAN was from Baden. This is the extent of the information I have on this family. Do you know where Edward KUHMANN was from, or when he was born? If from Baden, that lead would be worth following up. It looks like the KUMMANs buried at that Bergen St. cemetery are from the family in the 1880 Census. I'd be interested in whatever you can tell me about the Old German Cemetery Records at the NJHS. Just where was this cemetery? How long was it in use? Was it affiliated with a church? Have the records been published? I am interested in learning more about some of my dad's STEWART family: John M. STEWART (1836-1906) and his wife Mary Augusta FOSTER (1840-1903) lived in Kearny and East Newark, Hudson Co. They were my great great grandparents. They had two daughters, one of which was Serlena L STEWART (b. 1860) and husband August/Augustus H JACOBUS (1856-1907). They lived in Newark, Essex Co., NJ; however, Augustus is buried in Arlington Cemetery, Kearny, Hudson Co., NJ. I do not know when Serlena died nor where she is buried. They had some 11 children, namely: Nettie May Jacobus (b. 1875/76) Walter Jacobus, b. 1877 Julia Jacobus, b. 1882 May Jacobus, b. 1884 Irene V. Jacobus, b. 1886, married a HAYES ? Augustus Henry Jacobus, b. 1887; died March 1909 Bertha Jacobus, b. 1889 Raymond S. Jacobus, b. 1892; d. 1912 George Iliff Jacobus, b. 1894; died 1919; married Lillian Virginia Greiner Myrtle Jacobus, b. 1896 Hazel Jacobus, b. 1899. If anyone can add additional information, I would truly appreciate it. I would love to be able to learn of a living descendant--a cousin--with whom I could communicate and share information. Thanks. Joyce, You could have the NJArchives do a search for the marriage record. If the first child was born in October of 1870 a good guess would be that they were married in the 1868-1870 time frame. Marriage records are available for that time frame. If you are able it would be worth a trip to the Archives yourself. You might also find the birth records for the children. You could also check the death records after 1921 for Michael and Johanna.
