    3. Lucy, Thank you very much for your note regarding the Roberts. With the multiple Aarons and Isaacs in my Tompkins line I should have known that there would, of course, be multiple Hugh Roberts. I had noted in the Old Newark burying ground records an Abigail Roberts and her son who died in 1738. The Hugh Roberts who died in 1738 was also there. I just assumed, incorrectly I see, that this was Hugh's wife. I gather we don't know Hugh Roberts II's wife Martha's last name? Any suggestions on how I can trace the children of Rebecca Roberts and John Tompkins? I would very much like to tie down my Aaron Tompkins parentage. I see that the Aaron name runs in the Roberts line also. Beverly Fearn Porter, Columbia, MD

    3. How very nice of you! Thank You. I don't know very much about "the" business except this family and related families: Dobra and Freiensehner, all in Newark at the same time apparently got some training in Hanau, which according to family lore is a hub for jewellery making/training in Hesse. At any rate these three families were into jewellery in Newark, Texarkana, Texas (for a short stint before moving back to New Jersey) and in Attleboro, Massachusetts. There are some marriages among these families, but I haven't nailed down the link to the Theberaths, other than a picture in an old, old scrapbook which is inscribed "our cousin" Anything that you might add to my limited knowledge will be happily received. ck ----- Original Message ----- From: <Breakness@aol.com> To: <njessex@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 16, 2007 1:07 PM Subject: Re: [NJESSEX] [THEBERATH] -Newark 1840-1920 | | | In a message dated 5/14/2007 9:22:45 A.M. 3. Hi Beverly: I am a direct descendant of the pioneer Roberts family of Newak, NJ, as apparently, are you. I've studied this family a lot and I detect some confusion in your information. According to what I have learned from various sources (church records, local histories, other descendants) Rebecca Roberts m. John Tompkins was born in 1701. Her parents were Hugh Roberts ll 1667-1738 and his first wife Martha---------?-1723. I think that the will that mentions Rebecca's children was that of Hugh Roberts II. It gets real confusing since several generations of this family had a person named Hugh Roberts. I am descended from several of them. Here's some of my line: 1. Hugh Roberts @1600-1671 m. Mary Calkins 1628=1717 who were among the founders of Newark, NJ. 2. Hugh Roberts II 1667-1738 m. Martha-------?1723 mentioned above. 3. Hugh Roberts III 1696-1776 m. Abigail Browne 1697-1776. 4. Daniel Roberts 1719-1816 m. Mary Campbell 1717-1807 5. Aaron Roberts 1755-1815 m. Elizabeth Hedden 1757-1845 Aaron was an American soldier in the Revolution. and so on............ You can see that the Hugh Roberts III who married Abigail Browne (# 3 above) could not have been the father of Rebecca Roberts m. John Tompkins. I hope this clears things up. Let me know. 2. Maryann Gunn
    3. My great grandfather was Peter Francis Logan. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1861 and came over with his family when he was 6. Sometime in the 1920's or 30's ( he died in 1940) ,there was a human interest article in the Newark papers- which one I don't know, about my great grandfather and the wood carvings he made. They were carved out of wood from disasters, like train wrecks. The article had a photo of him. I saw this in my father's possession when I was a kid- a few years ago It has vanished. I very much want a copy of this. I live in Texas and won't be going to NJ any time soon. I am more than willing to pay for someone to go to the newspaper archives and see if the article is there, but need the name of a researcher who can do this. Anybody out there use someone they can recommend for the job? My younger brother has all the carvings, mostly chains and balls in boxes. Each is labeled with the disaster it came from. The article quotes him as saying that his dream was to get a piece of wood from the Titanic to carve. And if anyone knows the Logan family, I would love to hear from you. Maryann
