    3. Hi; I'm new to the list & need some info and am not sure this is the right list. What area of NJ would be meant in a will dated 1720 by, "all property belonging to me in East Jersey?" Thei man's brother was in W. Salem Co. in 1742 but don't know if this means anything. I chose Essex because East Jersey was mentioned on Home Page. Thanks for any help. Nita Pearce npear2@rmi.net

    1. Hart, Ireland births, posted
    2. Sandra Hart
    3. I just got back from Ireland. I collected Hart/Harte birth records from County Cork, Parish of Aghada. I have posted these records on my GeoCities web site. The child's name, Parents name and Sponsors are given. The wives maiden names are used to help show family connections. I copied the records as they were written. Different spellings were used for the same person. My one record is in purple. I haven't been able to figure out all the relationships. According to the Parish Priest, the families are grouped together. The fun part is figuring out siblings! Please let me know if you connect with any of these Hart's! What I have found points to the Newark or Orange, NJ. area. I found a tax roll on the BigEd Gedcom site that shows in 1789 a Nathan Squier was on the tax roll for Newark. The previous listing was 1783 and he wasn't there then. Is any one out there researching this family or know of them? >> Hi Betsey, I am a Condit (plus all connected lines!) descendent and if this would be of interest to you; the following is taken from "The Genealogical Record of the CONDIT Family". pg 32 (61) Daniel Condit (of Amos) Jan. 4, 1783 married, April 16, 1811, Hannah Squier (of Nathan, South Orange, NJ) born Feb. 14, 1789; died Oct. 14, 1827. He was a merchant at Orange, a man of exemplary character, and an elder of the Presbyterian Church at that place for a number of years previous to his death, May 11, 1820. Daniel's grandfather, Daniel was a brother to my Condit ancestor, David; their father Samuel bought and settled the land that became part of Orange, NJ. Unfortunately the Condit ancestors who compiled this family book didn't care to leave much information on the women! If you would like I can give you the information on Daniel's ancestors. I wish I could be of more help. Helen Wagner deKirk1@aol.com (cool at last in Texas)

    3. Hello Everyone, I was wondering if anyone has access to the Bloomfield City Directories? I have made copies of the 1903, 1904, 1904-1905 & 1908. I am looking for the names of Elias Bennett, Sarah Bennett, Lester Bennett or any Benbrook's. I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to look into any before 1910? Thank You so much for any help that anyone is able to give to me on this matter. Carol Ann Vian Bennett in Metaline Falls, Washington

    1. Surnames- WESTBROOK & BENNETT
    2. Carol Bennett
    3. Hello Everyone, I am researching the surname of WESTBROOK as my husbands grandfather married the first time a Jennie L. WESTBROOK. Jennie L. WESTBROOK was born in July 1872 in Bloomfield, Essex, New Jersey. I don't know when she died, but we are assumiong it was in childbirth. She married Lester Elias BENNETT 28 July 1900 in the Church of the Ascension in New York City. Lester Elias BENNETT was a Musician. Jennie L. WESTBROOK was the daughter of George J. WESTBROOK & Sarah K. I know that George J WESTBROOK was born in 1847 in New York & was a Carpenter. Sarak K. was born 1850 in Bloomfield. I know that they lived at 645 Bloomfield Ave. which is next door to Lester Elias BENNETT'S grandparents who lived at 647 Bloomfield Ave. Jennie L WESTBROOK had a brother named George J. WESTBROOK & he was born 1874 in Bloomfield. Does any of these names look familiar? We are trying to piece together my husbands grandfather early life. We are still looking for him & where he died. We know that after Jennie L. WESTBROOK died that somehow he ended up in Big Piney, Wyoming & married a second time & eventually produced my husbands father. When my husbands father was four, he & his three sisters were put into an orphanage & within a year after that Lester Elias Bennett was never heard from again. We would love to know more about the WESTBROOK family & where they may be buried or anything else about them. We are willing to share anything that we have on these two families. 1. Important announcement
    2. Glenn G. Geisheimer
    3. Hello Essex County Researchers, Due to a large amount of recent spam attacks (only one got through to this list, the others were blocked), Rootsweb has adopted a policy of "closing" their mailing lists to non-subscribers. This new policy will only affect those people that are not subscribed to the mailing list. From now on their posts will go to me instead of the list. At that point I will forward the appropriate ones and invite the person to subscribe to the list. The inappropriate ones will be deleted without notice. AGAIN, This Rootsweb policy (not mine) does not affect anyone that is able to read this. Below is a portion of the notice I received: ============================================================ This announcement is to let you know that we've just finished "closing" all of the RootsWeb lists. This means that the list server will only let you post to a mailing list if you subscribe to it. I'm sorry that this had to be done so hastily, but we didn't really have any choice. The volume of spam that was being sent through our lists had reached a phenomenal level, and I was spending most of my time on that problem rather than improving the systems. Worse, some users had begun to send spam complaints to sites that were completely unrelated to RootsWeb, but could kill our network connection if they received too many complaints. Closing the lists to subscribers became a matter of self-preservation. ========================================================== Please direct any questions on this matter to my personal email address and not to the list. Thank you for your cooperation. Glenn G. 1. Van Giesen and Silvester
    2. In a message dated 98-12-11 17:28:05 EST, you write: << Can anyone out there tell me if Silvester is a Dutch name? If so.. what is its English equilvalet? >> Hi Jason and Others! I'd never seen Si(y)lvester as a feminine name before. That could be a Dutch usage. The closest English equivalent would be Sylvia, which has the same "woodlands" meaning (from Latin) as Sylvester. Incidentally, the name Van Giesen rings a bell with me. There were Van Giesens in Nutley (Acquackanonk was where Nutley joins Clifton, by the Passaic River) back in pre-Revolutionary times; an Abraham Van Giesen was the only Dutch Loyalist known to have lived in Nutley. He was forced to give up his property because of his political beliefs. I have a photograph of his old house, taken about three months ago when I was visiting Nutley for my high-school reunion. It's now the Nutley Woman's Club building. My source of information on the Van Giesen situation is Anne A. Troy's 1960 book "Nutley Yesterday--Today." Hope this helps-- Doris Stanford of Colorado

    1. LITTLE/LITTELL family
    2. Lise Doss
    3. Hi, I have a photocopy from John Littell's book "Genealogies of the First Settlers of Passaic Valley" (p. 213-215) where he says that John LITTLE, son of George of Newbury,Ma. left home and then bought land in Elizabethtown in 1676.He was one of the freeholders of Elizabethtown. He also said that George had three sons, Benjamin, Silas and John. I searched through the VRs for all George's children and found a John but no Benjamin or Silas. I also found a Joseph and Moses. However, today I decided to check out the vital records of Newbury and it says that John LITTLE died in Newbury on July 20, 1672. To further complicate things, I've found a deed in the NJ Archives books Vol. 21 that says "Joseph, son of George LITLE, late of Newbury dec'd, and John, son of Moses LITLE and grandson of George aforesaid, also of Newbury, to William ILSLY, late of Newbury, now of Woodbridge, for a freehold there, obtained by George LITLE." The John LITLE who was the son of Moses LITLE was born in 1679 in Newbury and thus could not have bought land in 1676 in NJ. The other John was dead in 1672. Can anyone shed some light on this set of contradictions? And does anyone have an opinion on how reliable John LITTELL's book is? Thanks, Lise ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    1. Susannah LITTELL discrepancy
    2. Lise Doss
    3. Hi, There is a will dated March 18, 1784 in the NJ Archives book of will abstracts for Susannah LITTELL of Westfield, Essex Co., widow. There was a Susannah TOOKER who was married to Benjamin LITTELL (he died in 1760). She had children born in 1746 and 1751. Recently one of our fellow listers pointed out he has the records from Westfield Presbyterian Cemetery on his web page. It shows a grave for Susannah LITTLE, died June 1753. Does anyone know how these two people are related, if at all? Thanks for your help, Lise ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    1. Re: Sanders, Egbertse, etc
    2. Hi Lorine, Nancy, Pat, and others.... I apologize. I did not provide enough information. I am not sure when Peter Sanderson (Pieter Xanders, Sanders, or Kinders) was born but his wife, Margrietje Stagg was born in 1706 probably in Acquackanonck, a daughter of Thomas. According to Pat, their children were Silvester (b. 1727), Annetje (b. 1729) and Elisabeth (b. 1732) - - all baptized in Acquackanonck Church in New Jersey. Peter was a son of Sander Egbertse who married (1) Elsje Pieters, daughter of Peter Jansen Staats and Annetje Jans Van Dyke and (2) Maddaleentje Van Giesen daughter of Reynier Bastiansen Van Giesen and Dirckje Cornelius Van Groenland. So far I know that Sander Egbertse had these children: Trynte who married Adrian Post, Egbert, Pieter, Annetje, and Harmtje who married France Francisco. I believe Sander was a son of Egbert Teunise Metselaer and Harmintje Harmens. Silvester (also Sylvester, Selvestor, Sylvia) Zanderson, daughter of PIeter and Margreitje Stagg, married Zebediah Ward (1724-1783). Their children were Caleb (b. 1749), Sarah (b. 1751), John (b. 1753), Zebediah Jr. (b. 1755), Catherine (b. 1757), Margaret (b. 1759), Elizabeth (b. 1761), Lydia (b. 1763), Moses (b. 1765), and Eunice Ward (b. 1767). Sylvester and her husband, Zebediah lived in Essex Co. His son, Caleb Ward married Ruth Lane and they were parents of my ancestor, Catherine Ward Edwards. Can anyone out there tell me if Silvester is a Dutch name? If so.. what is its English equilvalet? Thank you all for your quick reply to my query. Regards, Jason Coffman
