    2. dmd
    3. While you are technically correct, I stand by my position. These were just what they say they are. A DECLARATION. A document that at that point was not necessarily verified. The naturalization was another matter. But if researchers are not finding the information they seek, they should look at the port of entry for the Declaration papers. I have found some this way. 2. Most of Newark is in fact still 201 area code. Yes some 201 numbers have changed, but most of Newark is still 201.

    1. Fee in obtaining a will?
    2. katherine.fiedler
    3. I'm interested in 'ordering' a copy of a will from the Essex County Superior Court. I have the address from the Essex County home page, but I need to know if there is a cost involved. Also, do I need to request probate papers separately? Or will they be included? The death was in 1921. Thanks! Katherine Pitts, Fayetteville, NY

    3. Hello Essex County Researchers, I just put on-line the following Essex County Information Boards: Obituaries Wills Pensions Bible Records Biographies Deeds These boards ARE NOT for queries, they are for information only. All postings by you, the user, will be informational. Any queries/questions posted on these boards will be deleted WITHOUT notice. These are the GenConnect policies as well as mine. Since these may be new to most of you I would suggest reviewing other sites with them. To do that go to the following link and just pick a state and a listing of counties with these boards will appear: <http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/usaindex.html> Thank you for your cooperation in this endeavor. One other quick note, one of the photos added to the Virtual Newark Site is of the Essex County Isolation Hospital in Newark. Thanks again and good luck, Glenn G. 1. Update
    2. Glenn G. Geisheimer
    3. Hello Essex County Researchers, I hope everyone had a happy holiday. I've added some more photos to the Virtual Newark Web Site. One is an aerial view of part of Woodland Cemetery. I've also added the original map of Newark 1666 showing the residential lots and an altered version showing today's streets. For those of you who have experienced a loss of mail please note that Rootsweb has done some upgrading that may have affected some service. In the future please remember that this list doesn't get mail everyday and if you suspect a problem please email me privately. This avoids non list mail going to the list AND keeps unwanted bounces from my personal mailbox. At any one time I am "carrying" up to 5 list members that are having ISP problems. So every time a message goes to the list I can get 5 bounces in my mailbox. I would also like to know if there is any interest in adding addition "boards" to the Essex County Genealogy Web Site, such as Obituary, Wills, Biography, Deeds, Bible Records, or Pensions? Examples of these types of boards may be found at: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccherok/post.html> Thanks, Glenn G. 2. R. Healy
    3. Pat - The Newark telephone book doesn't list a St. Benedict's Church. However there is a St. Benedict's Pre School at 79 Barbara St. (201-589-5626) & a St. Benedict's Grammar School (201-589-7295) on Komorn St., runs parallel to Barbara St. one block away. There's also a St. Benedict's Preparatory School (201-643-4800) on Martin Luther King Blvd., but that's quite a ways from Barbara St. Bob Healy patricia sachs wrote: > > Hi, > > Would like to know if anyone knows of a St. Benedicts church > (Catholic German)in Newark. 3. Hi Pat, The LDS has microfilmed the records from St. Benedict's Church. Also, I believe the Essex County website lists information about this church. It was a German church. The LDS microfilms: #1398623 baptisms 1857-1913 marriages 1864-1894 and confirmations and communions #1398624 marriages 1894-1935 deaths 1866-1919 communions and confirmation 1894-1914 Janice Danks patricia sachs wrote: > Hi, > > Would like to know if anyone knows of a St. Benedicts church > (Catholic German)in Newark. 1. Newark Isolation Hospital
    2. Robert S Parker
    3. On 28 Dec Robin sent the interesting article about the closing of the Newark Isolation Hospital. For further information, I send notes given to me by my uncle, who was b. 1902. His mother's two oldest brothers died in the 1872 smallpox epidemic which swept Newark. "Even as a child I [my uncle]) can remember the Pest Houses to which persons were taken for isolation . . .; and with the limited medical knowledge of those days you were very, very lucky to survive. Newark's Pest Houses were down near Weequahic Park [south end of city] on an isolated piece of dry salt meadow. They were a group of 6 or 8 houses, each for a different 'pest', and were like 4-story wood tenements. This made it economic to burn one down when too 'pesty'." Twin friends of my mother's were sent to the Isolation Hospital, when they developed smallpox in the early 1900s. Fortunately, they survived and grew to adulthood. I am sure the buildings were gone before the 1930s. Muriel S.
