    1. Who are these Page people?
    2. Andrea Beaudin
    3. If someone has any ideas on this, I would appreciate input. As I state ad nauseum (sp?), my genealogy interest is spurred by a collection of family letters in my possession. I have a sizeable amount of correspondence concerning Anna E. Page and (I believe) her daughter, Adeline F. Page. Anna E. died in Essex Co. in July of 1916 Marvin Page (father? husband?) died in 1879. As of 1935, Adeline was still around and back in NJ, after having lived in NYC. The only clue that I have is the fact that my g-gf, Garrett Stryker, was asked to check out Anna E.'s safety deposit box after she died. Letters from Adaline are signed, "Cousin." I have sent away for Marvin's Death Certificate, and will send away for Anna E.'s, but I have no idea how they connect to the Strykers. Do any of these names strike (no puns intended) any notes with anyone? Thanks-- Andrea Beaudin

    1. Re: Isaac WHITEHEAD will abstract
    2. Lise, A cordwainer is a shoemaker, apparently of a better quality shoe than a cobbler. When I first saw that term, I just assumed it was someone who cuts cords of wood for fireplaces! Good thing I came across the definition in the last few weeks, otherwise I would continue to be misled! I had to comment on your will abstract, especially since Elizabethtown falls in Union county (now). I just started two new boards on www.rootsweb.com/~njunion, for Bible records and for obituaries. I've already posted about 20 obituaries on the new board. Only 3 are related to me. So far, no action on the board besides mine. :( I also posted the Luster-Gulick and the Roll-Kidd Bible records on the other board. I think these boards are great because of the search engines, and how the surnames can be found in a countrywide search through GenConnect. It also allows people to actively participate in putting information on the NJUNION site, instead of just me. However, there are other boards available---wills, deeds, pensions, biographies---but I'm in that wait and see mode. I've noticed other USGenWeb people have added the boards but not gotten much response. I'd prefer to only start a board if I have a sample or two to post to give others an idea of the format. So, Lise, would you be willing to put your will abstracts on the NJUNION board? If so, I'd be happy to get one up and running so people have access to this valuable information. Thanks! ---Robin www.rootsweb.com/~njunion

    1. Isaac WHITEHEAD will abstract
    2. Lise Doss
    3. Hi Dave, I copied this from the NJ Archives Vol. 21, 1664-1703, p. 184: 1690-1 Jan. 31, Will of Isaac Whitehead of Elizabeth Town. Wife Mary. Having disposed of his lands by deeds of gift he appoints sons Isaac and Joseph with Nathaniel Bunnell executors. Witnesses John Harriman, John Woodruffe. Proved February 26 following. page 271 1691 feb. 27. Letters testimonial on the preceding will issued to the executors named. page 272 1689 Dec. 3. Deed. Isaac Whitehead senior to his son Joseph, for 7 acres betw. the road, Mr. Woodruff and Benj. Ogden; one half of the meadow on the Bay, adjoining Joseph Meeker and Mr. Lyons; one half of the land on the road to Newark, adjoining Mr. Wilson. p. 273 On page 185 I copied this: 1690-1 March 24. Do. Isaac Whitehead of Elizabeth Town, cordwainer, and wife Abigail, to Samuel Whitehead of Southampton, L.I., cordwainer, for 45 acres in the bounds of Elizabeth Town, S.E. Joseph Meeker, S. W. Henry Lyon, N.W. unsurveyed land, N.E. a road; also 8 acres of meadow there, S Mr. Woodruff, N. and E. unsurveyed meadows, W. a small creek. 1690-1 March 12. Will of John Warren of Elizabeth Town. Wife Grace, Mary, eldest dau. of Samuel Whitehead of Southampton... witnesses Isaac Whitehead... Another book gave the original source of Isaac Whitehead's will as EJD Lib D p. 271, 272. I did some checking and the wife Mary could not be the mother of Isaac Whitehead's children, so she's at least his second wife. The Do. means it's a deed. I think this must be for IW Jr. What the heck is a cordwainer? I see a lot of those guys... 1. Naturalization
    2. Just wanted to let you know what I found on the subject: As of 1824 the basic requirements were: 1. 2 years of residency before filing a declaration of intent (this was not the naturalization paperwork only the beginning of the naturalization process) 2. 5 years of residency in the US before filing the final paperwork 3. 1 year of residency in a particular state (which may assist some in the whereabouts of the final documentation - the naturalization papers) As of 1906 the same applied although alien registration was now required As of 1921 the residency requirement to file a declaration of intent was waived. There have been many changes over the years and additional requirements/non- requirements for women, aliens serving in the armed forces, etc. but I think this may help. I have a copy of my GGGrandfathers NATURALIZATION paperwork from NJ on 11/7/1859 and it states: "...an Alien, personally appeared in open Court, and prayed to be admitted to become a Citizen of the United States, pursuant to the directions of the several Acts of the Congress of the United States of America, and the Supplements thereto, in such case made and provided; and the said Applicant having thereupon produced to the Court such evidence, made such declaration and renunciation, and taken such oaths as are by the said Acts required: It is thereupon ordered by the Court, that the said Applicant be admitted to all the rights, privileges and immunities of A FREE CITIZEN of the United States of America" This was completed by the Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas for the County of Essex, State of New Jersey Hope this shed a little more light on the subject.
