Hi Pat - If you don't get a look-up from someone, the LDS has filmed the Newark city directories. The films run in a long series on consecutive numbers but the only one I have in my notes is #1,377,136 for 1900. Even if you do get your information, you might want to look at the directories anyway. I found all kinds of details on my ancestors, following them through career changes, moving house every so often, etc. Judith Werner Hayward, California, USA RootsWeb Sponsor
Hi, Does anyone know where I could find out information on a railroad accident that occurred on Nov. 23, 1916 in or around Newark? My great great uncle, Philip Doyle, died because of this accident. Thank you for your help. Kristy Kjag786@aol.com
Hi, Does anyone know the ward numbers to the following streets in Newark? Before 1880, Court Street; 1880, Boyd Street; 1900, Bergen Street. Thanks for any help. Kristy Kjag786@aol.com
My name is Barbara Pierce. I have taken over the USGenWeb Archives for NJ. Also, Joe Patterson has volunteered to maintain 3 NJ county archive pages...Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean Counties. I will be maintaining the balance of the counties. The NJ Archives could use a little boost. In comparison to other states, we rank very low. There are some counties that do not have any archive files at all. The USGenWeb Archives Digital Library was implemented in July 1996, and files are being added everyday. If you have any resources you would like to submit to the NJ Archives, please contact Barbara Pierce BarbJP48@aol.com or Joe Patterson jpatter@epix.net (for Mercer, Monmouth & Ocean Counties only). Why not share this valuable information with your fellow researchers and submit transcriptions to the NJ Archives. For more information on the project, go to the USGenWeb Archives Project Guidelines http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/timetodo.htm Included on this page are types of files that are submitted. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Regards.... Barbara Pierce Bergen County NJGenWeb host Renville County MNGenWeb host USGenWeb NJ Archives coordinator
Hi, I may have asked this before, but I am at a point where I am really stuck. Does anyone out there have a Newark Directory for the early 1900's? I am looking for a Julia Ambros on Van Buren and a John Farkas on Wall St. Also a Marie Schandel and John Treier. Anything around the late 1890's to the 1920's I would think could be a help. Thanks in advance and thanks too for all the help I have received on St. Peters and other inquiries. Hi everyone, Another question- Does anyone know if the EDs or Wards of Newark remained consistent throughout all of the census years? Ie. if I know that the family was living at the same address during the 1880 and 1885 census, will I be able to just go to the right ward and find the ED to cut down on how many entries I have to read to find them in 1885? Also, is there anything available that would list which streets are included in each ED or ward for each census? Thanks Laura
Arthur, John, and Loretta Lehman, children of John and Loretta Lehman, were sent to live in orphanages in Newark in the early 1900's. On John and Loretta's marriage certificate I found they were both born in Newark in 1873, and married there in 1893. The children were born 1893, 1895, and 1898. The 1900 census shows them living, still in Newark. In the 1902-03 Newark city directory John is listed as a laborer, but in the 1903-1904 city directory he does not appear. The NJ death indexes do not list John or Matilda for any year 1900-1910. Actually, there were entries for each of their names, but the data on the certificate did not correspond, even by a long stretch, to either of them. I hesitate to try the NY death index, because the info avail is so limited I have a feeling I'll have to spend $11.00 x many John Lehmans, only to find that they are not the right ones. I have tracked Matilda's family (LIMBURG with many spelling variations)- she had 2 brothers and 4 sisters who could have taken the children but didn't, and her mother shows up in Newark until 1918 when she goes to Rochester, NY. Ironically, this is only about 45 min. from where her "orphaned" grand-daughter married and was having her first child that same year. They never knew of each other. I really want to know how and where (and when) John and Matilda died. Were there any flu outbreaks in 1902-03, or some major catastrophe in Newark that might have left the children without their parents? The oral history from the family says that Lauretta was one or two when she went into the orphanage, but since they are still in the 1900 census I am guessing it took place pretty soon after that. There are no wills, family documents, etc pertaining to this family. Loretta only knew her parents names and that she had a brother John and one other brother. She had been told that they were placed in a different orphanage than the one she was in. I would really appreciate any insight anyone might have to offer- I'm stuck here. Loretta's daughter is 75 now (my husband's grandmother), and it still really bothers her to not know why her mother grew up in an orphanage. Thank you in advance- I know there must be someone out there with a great suggestion that will help me find the answer... Laura

Hi: I was researching in a local FHC this morning and checked for the St. Peter's Church records for you. The microfilms of the original records can be found at McLaughlin Library, Seton Hall University, South Orange. They also may be ordered through the LDS FHC. The dates and film numbers follow after your message <<St.Peters Roman Catholic Church is still around(Newark). I am hoping to find some records on family marriage for Joseph L. Sachs and Anna R. Baptisms 1889-18894 are in English. Communions are in English too. There are individual indexes for most volumes of baptisms and marriages. The marriage indexes are for the groom only. I hope this information will be of some help to you. Regards, Pat Giovanni Sunnyvale, CA Researching: Christensen, Dailey, MacNee, Mattern, McEvoy, O'Hara - Newark Byrne, Burns, O'Hara - Belleville

Hi Nancy and All, I would also be interested in the identity of the Bethia that married Benjamin Lyon. Although the Lyon Memorial says her name was Condit, there is nothing further on her ancestry. The Condit genealogy doesn't have her at all. There is a good arguement on pp. 49 - 51 in the book "The History of the Lindley, Lindsley - Linsley Families in America, 1639 - 1930" by John M. Lindly (c. 1930) that Bethia is in fact a Lindley, a dau. of Frances Lindsley and Susanna Culpepper. She would have first married Ebenezer Canfield. Does anyone have additional sources to check for her identity? Hello Essex County Researchers, First, I'd like to thank everyone for trusting me to handle the off topic post of the other day, via personal email and not disrupting the list. Secondly, one of our list subscribers brought to my attention a FTP site that had a partial New Jersey Census from 1880. It was about 1% of the total. I've extracted the Newark data (there was none for any other part of Essex, although I suspect a few of the Newark ones are from the surrounding area). You will find that data reformatted and indexed on the Virtual Newark site. There are about 550 surnames on the census. Please note that I have also provided the FTP URL for anyone who wants to check out the other states. Also the information that I have posted is the only information that I know so please don't email me asking for further information. And lastly, if anyone can figure out the coding on the census please explain it to me. I've tried to get their EXTRACT program to work without success. Good Luck, Glenn G.
