    1. Re: LDS microfilm numbers
    2. Dave, I would definitely try again. FHCs are staffed by volunteers (mostly church members), and their knowledge and interest level can be quite variable. Volunteers donate at least several hours a week to the FHC, so you won't always find the same staff there every time the FHC is open. You should have no problem ordering microfilms from the FHL. After all, that's one of the main purposes of an FHC, to make the FHL records accessible! Good luck! ---Robin

    3. Hi, I just finished reading the mail from other Essex researchers. I want to comment on the LDS FHC. I went to one here in Idaho last week and I sat for an hour and more with a woman who was willing to take time to help me. However, when I went to a different one here in town, my husband and I were basically ignored. Noone asked if we needed help. All they did was inquire if we had made an appointment to use the computers. Needless to say, we came away without much information and a rather bad attitude in general. When you are new to a place like that, it would be helpful to have someone at least ask and show you where to find tapes, books etc. It really was rather uncomfortable. As I said, the first one I went to was more than helpful. I guess it all depends on how much "traffic" they get. I guess all I can say is, if one doesn't feel right, try another. With some luck, you may come out with a better outlook. Pat from Idaho ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    3. Hi! I'm new to this list. I've been researching the BIRD family that originated in Elizabethtown at it's settlement. I believe the first BIRD settler was John Bird, but I have no proof of that. He had two sons, Joseph and Jeremiah, b abt 1680, who owned plantations in Rahway. Their children married into the Cutter, Marsh, Freeman, Force and FitzRandolph families of Elizabeth, Rahway and Woodbridge. If anyone has any info on these families or their descendants, or would like to see what I've already put together, please email me. 3. Glenn, I applaud your first steps and the efforts of other list members in posting the numbers of LDS microfilmed records. If this could be expanded it would be a godsend to researchers such as myself. I live in France and am visiting the U.S. in March. If I knew what was available in LDS microfilms of Essex County local records, I might be able to order ahead through a LDS Family History Center that I could visit during my two-week stay. All the best, Dave McMane Paris

    2. Dave, There are 14 Family History Centers in France, including one in Paris. You don't have to travel to the States or Salt Lake City to access the films. Try this web site for exact locations: http://www.lds.org/en/2_How_Do_I_Begin/4_Where_is.html ---Robin www.rootsweb.com/~njunion

    2. Since Glenn (host for www.rootsweb.com/~njessex) mentioned the LDS FHC, I thought I'd add what I posted on my web site...... Even if you don't live near Salt Lake City, you can have access to its world- famous Family History Library through its Family History Centers. Each Family History Center has CD-ROMs, including the International Genealogical Index (IGI), Ancestral File (AF), the Social Security Death Index (SSDI), and much more. For a minimal cost, you can rent microfilms from the Library for use at a Center. •Find a Family History Center near you (http://www.lds.org/en/2_How_Do_I_Begin/4_Where_is.html) The Family History Library and its Family History Centers are sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). You do not have to be a church member to use their facilities. ---Robin www.rootsweb.com/~njunion P.S. www.lds.org has beginner tips, worksheets, and guides to their software programs. You'll also find select press releases, including the announcement of the Ellis Island FHC for year 2000, the ship passenger lists transcription program, and the new CD-ROM titles.

    3. Hello ECR's I've had a few requests for the microfilm numbers of the Holy Sepulchre records at the LDS FHC. If someone could write them down the next time they go, I and many others would appreciate it. On a side note, look for big things to come from the LDS FHC soon. From what I hear they are going to go on line. What will be on line is anyone's guess right now. Thanks, Glenn G. 2. Beverly W. Crifasi
    3. I recently came across an obituary for John Wilson VAN DUYNE (b 12 June 1844) published in The Progress, the local newspaper for Caldwell, NJ. The date of the obituary is 1934, and his death date would be 28 Jul 1934 but other information I'd gotten online had him dying in 1944. The Progress is frequently wrong in details, but I figure they probably can manage to get their publication data right (you have to read this paper to appreciate their problem with "details") In addition, The Progress gives him three additional surviving children- all married daughters- and these were not included in my original data. Their married names were: Mrs. Marella Norwood, Mrs. Reginald Russell and Mrs. Elmer Thompson. He also had grandchildren and such. I'd appreciate more information about this family and clarification about the death data. Regards- Bev Crifasi

    1. Wards and Ellen542
    2. Hi Everyone! I went to the NJ State lib. today and found that they do have the book with the Newark city streets and wards that Glenn just told us about. I did not see the supplement for the later census wards there, but there was one for 1910. Since I was interested in the 1895 census I was pretty devastated, until I was looking in the 1895 city directory and noticed that the wards are listed in the street index in the beginning of the directory! In fact, that book about the wards pretty much is done in the same style, almost like a "cut and paste" kind of book. In my situation I was looking for Aquaduct St., also called Highland Ave, and it listed both wards 15 and 8. I looked in 8 first, so of course the family I was looking for was in the middle of 15. But the important thing is, I didn't have to look through all 15 wards. There may have been a way to narrow it down further, but I didn't want to take the time to figure it out. Also of interest: the 1895 state index gave only names and age ranges for residents, and if they were of foreign birth. (checkmarks for Germany, Ireland, or other) Their address is not there, nor is occupation. One last thing: Ellen who posted the Stuhlinger/Grimm request- your email address isn't accepting my message- send me one that will work. Thanks. Laura

    3. Would anyone be willing to check for the following marriage record for me? All I know is that this couple got married in Newark, New Jersey, in 1918: Edward Maurman(n), born 2 December 1898 in Newark, and Mildred Amelia Ko(e)ppel, born 19 January 1901 in Strys, Galicia. Their daughter Virgina Caroline Maurmann was born 20 February 1919 in Newark. I've tried to obtain the record via mail, but was told that the office would not perform any research. I'd be glad to pay for time and fees, if anyone would be willing to check for this record for me, especially as I do not know the correct first name of Edward's father. Thanks for any suggestions! 3. Hello Essex County Researchers, I received in the mail today 21 more postcards of views of Newark. I will be adding them to my Virtual Newark site in the next week or so. <http://www.castle.net/~glenng/newark/history/photos.htm> One postcard caught my attention. It is of the Newark Orphan Asylum at 323 High Street. I recognized it immediately as the Administration Building for the New Jersey Institute of Technology. A building which I've been in many times (embarrassed look). So now we know what happened to that building. Some of you may already have known that but I didn't. Of course I could have found this out by cross checking the addresses I already have on my web site with current addresses but I'm always going forward with additions to the site and rarely looking back. Bearing that in mind, if anyone else has any input like this I would be happy to hear it. Also, if anyone would like to have their Newark Photos posted please send them to me as an email attachment. On another matter, lately some posts to the mailing list and to my personal mail box only have an on-line handle as the address. I would like everyone (mentioned in the Essex FAQ and intro message) who doesn't have their real names in their mail "headers" to sign their posts with their real names. We're all friends here. Also in the mail today was a book I ordered called "A Bibliography of Newark, New Jersey 1966 - 1986. It is an index of many books written about Newark. There are two books that deal with some recent postings: Newark Streets and Their Wards: 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880. Published by the N.J. Historical Society A Supplement to "Newark Streets and Their Wards" for 1895, 1905, and 1915. Published by the Newark Public Library. Please note that I don't have either of these books. Please keep in mind that I'm always open to suggestions. Thank You, Glenn G. 1. Re: ED Census Street Guides
    2. Laura & Other Essex County researchers: Check with the National Archives for a guide on the streets in each ward for the Newark census. We have one at the San Bruno, CA branch, so I would assume New York does as well. I remember using one for the 1910 census that had to be checked line by line. In a message dated 1/22/99 6:33:20 AM, you wrote: << Also, is there anything available that would list which streets are included in each ED or ward for each census?>> Good Luck, Pat Giovanni Sunnyvale, CA Researching: Christensen, Dailey, MacNee, Mattern, McEvoy, O'Hara - Newark Burns, Byrne, O'Hara - Belleville
