I forgot to add that MICHAEL O'Neil died on March 24, 1907 in PHILLIPSBURG.....THANKS
I found a great uncle who died in and was buried in Phillipsburg, NJ in 1907. His name was MICHAEL O'Neil. His sister was my great grandmother but her death CERT didn't list her parents name and neither did his. Did Phillipsburg have a newspaper in 1907 and if so could someone see if his obituary is there and send me a copy. It might list some more brothers and sisters and that would help me get to my great great grand parents......THANKS John J. Flynn
Willing to do CD lookups for New Jersey (Essex, Union or Hudson County.) I have the CDs from Salt Lake City for births, marriages and christenings from 1631 thru 1888. Please limit request to 2 a day. For marriages I will need the bride and groom's names and the approx. year of marriage. Most of the marriages seem to be from the Catholic church. The CD can be set to search for 5 years before or after the date given. For births and christenings, please send the name of the child and the father's name with the child's date of birth. Furnishing the mother's name is sometimes helpful but is not always given in the records. Judy in No. Carolina
Looking for the newspapers, The Caldwell Progress and The Montclair Times for the years, 1943-1947. Anyone know if they are on microfilm somewhere? Thank you. Pat Clark
I am french. I have recently learned that I am Franco-American. My name is Claude Richard and I live in the southern part of France. The circumstances surrounding my birth were concealed from me until recently. My father is Richard Gray and this is what I know about him: 1. He was in Oran, Algeria, during few months until end November, 1943 . 2. He may well have been in the US Army. His provisional camp was not near the harbor or the airport. 3. He was almost 6 feet, with light brown hair, and blue eyes. 4. His military base was situated southeast of Oran, between the Choupot area and the Cuvelier area (near Cite Petit). A road separated the base from a big Algerian market hall. 5. His dress uniform was a khaki jacket made of silky cloth. He had a cap and wore high shoes and gaiters. 6. My father was an "MP" (military police). 7. His friends called him Dick and he had a friend called Mike. 8. He apparently came back to the States, it seems before the end of the war. 9. He was in Oran until around 15 November - beginning December 1943. He came back in Oran : he had a few days'leave at the end of December 1943. Last day I saw my uncle (my mother's brother) and he has remembered that, in Oran at that time, rolling stock (jeep, truck, motor-driven, etc..except tank or plane) were unloaded in Oran (Oran harbor or Mers El Kebir harbor) then conveyed to the camp where was my father in Oran. This rolling stock were conveyed (by boat) from US in separate pieces. In this camp, there was a very large shed (named Les Halles) where american soldiers and french men re-assembled rolling stock. In my uncle's opinion, they were around 4.000 - 5.000 soldiers in this camp. My father was MP in this camp. I have tried to find my father without success. The results of my research are condensed below. In the fall of 1943, an American soldier named Richard Gray, between 19 and 23, was based at Oran in Algeria. There he met a young woman, my mother Lucienne Martin, 17 years old. They became very fond of each other and planned to be married. Richard received wedding dress photos from his sister who lived in the U.S. At the end of 1943 (end november or beginning december) Richard Gray was transfered to another, unknown to me, place to continue the war. He should have been informed by mail of my birth, probably in September, 1944. This story might be common place, but some troubling, complicating events intervened in this love story. Richard wrote often to my mother during the war and after he returned to the US. He said that he wanted to marry her; he expressed it in his letters. Unfortunately, my grandmother intercepted and destroyed all of his letters. She did not want this marriage to take place - it would mean that her daughter and grandson would move to the USA. I recently learned in March, 1998, from my mother the circumstances surrounding my birth. During this 54 year period, my mother thought she had been deserted, in a cowardly manner, by her fiance . To be deserted pregnant at a tender age was very difficult. I made several inquiries in my family in 1998 and I began to learn several things from an aunt. Before her death in 1977, my grandmother confided to my aunt that she had destroyed all correspondence between them as well as a few papers belonging to my mother. While she never knew Richard Gray, the account of my aunt was a good one and all of her explanations were later verified. In September, 1998 I finally learned the truth to my mother (the destroying of letters). The burdening facts that she was a deserted woman and an unmarried mother were out and, at that time, she told me my father's name. The passing years and the efforts to forget have resulted in fading memories. I have created this site, attempting to look for my father. Here I have placed a photo of my mother at that time. I have written lot of emails to Gray Families who have adress email on the web. I continue to use all the opportunities of the internet in my search. The surname Gray is a very common one in the US. If Richard Gray can be located, if he wishes, he will be able to contact me. I only want to know if he is alive, any details of my American family, and if he has been informed of my search. It's VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW the name of his Army. Is there a veteran who was in Oran during the WWW II and would answer me ? Please excuse me for any improprieties. I would like very much to find him still living If you have no knowledge of my father, if you could forward this request to veterans , and ask them to do the same, Thank you very much for all your help. Yours sincerely, Mr. Claude Richard PAEZ Allee du Vent d'Est - Les Vautes N° 7 83320 - Carqueiranne - FRANCE phone : +33 4 94 58 75 09 My Story site : http://aa-ienet.com/RICHARD.htm e-mail : marie-francoise.vincent-paez@wanadoo.fr ******************************************************* Thank you your help. WHAT I HAVE MADE I subscribe to lot of veterans web site, missing persons, forums, genealogics sites, all sites Army, news, shows, etc .. I or lot of people have inserted my letter to all sites. Without my father birth date, it's difficult to write from the all families who have an Richard Gray dead. I don't have more informations about my father. COULD YOU HELP ME ? Only : I ask you to forward my letter to people you know, and ask them to do the same, it is possible that this message will eventually reach some one with knowledge of my father I have tried all the solutions, it is the last attempt to find my father or my Gray family ***************************************************************
Hello ECRs I have a few different items to discuss so please read through. I am presently working on three different projects for the Virtual Newark Web Site. 1. The church information has been updated through 1900 with the exception of the alpha listing of Reverends. I am working on that now. 2. I have given the LDS FHC record index a separate page. You can get to it from the main page of the Essex County Genealogy Web Site. The links will bring you to separate pages with the microfilm numbers. I still have many more to post so please hold up on sending me anymore until I complete what I have. This will eliminate the doubles I'm receiving. When I'm done with what I have, I'll post a notice and ask you to check the index to see if you have any that I'm missing. 3. I still have many photos/images to post. Those are the three things that I am working on. I have a fourth project in mind which I will start when I'm done with those three. I'm also scanning maps of the German "States" for another web site. If anyone would like a scan of a particular "state" (kingdom, duchy, etc.) please email me and make sure that your ISP can handle a large .JPG file (some as big as 500kb). I have a few suggestions concerning the Digest Mode of the mailing list. Please read through the entire digest before you reply to any one message. This will cut down on redundant answers. On another list that I administer, someone put the wrong abbreviation for Alaska and the corrections went on for days. Also please remember to change the subject line from "Digest #........" to whatever the subject of the email is. The archives for this list can be found at: <http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl> Put NJESSEX-L in the box and press the submit button. As you already know, any type of warning letter is not permitted on this mailing list. I'm glad to see that the recent one has not been posted here. If there is something that you think is important please email it to me privately and I'll look it over. Please don't even bother me with a virus warning or tell me that Bill Gates is going to send 30,000 people to Disney Land if they test his new email system by forwarding an email. If it is relevant to Essex County Genealogy I'll post it in a generic form. I don't want someone falsely accusing someone else of anything wrong, as has happened in the recent warning letter fiasco. After saying that, I'd just like to say that please be aware of anyone who sends you a vague email requesting genealogical information. They should always have, at the very least, a surname that they are looking for in the body of the letter if not a full name and some information. You should be extremely suspicious of one that says "Hey, I think we're related, email me back". Well, that's enough for now. Remember, send any comments, suggestions, or criticisms to me via my personal email address. They are always welcome. Glenn G. Late last summer I wrote a letter to INS in Washington, DC, requesting naturalization or redident alien records for one SAMUEL FINKELSTEIN from Szumsk, Russia. This past weekend I received copies of a different Samuel Finkelstein. Hi, I'm new to this list and would like to know if anyone can give me tips on what kind of resources I might be able to use to find information on my GGG-grandfather who supposedly lived, married, and died in or near Newark in the late 1700's. I have been unable to find anything in the online resources I have looked at (such as the NJ Marriage index), and I get the feeling that there maybe aren't a lot of easily accessed records from this period. Here's what I know from handed-down family stories: Peter SMITH, b. ? in Scotland. Was a British soldier (don't know when). Married Eleanor CARTER of Newark (don't know when, but probably late 1780's?). They had a son, Nicholas, born Sept. 14, 1790. Peter drowned in the Passaic River in 1792. According the Essex Co. website, there are no state vital records before 1848. Any suggestions on how to proceed? Thanks very much, Jerry Smith ----- Jerry Smith Northern Marianas College jerryfs@saipan.com
Thank you all for the very helpful replies. Many listers suggested that my ancestor's name would have been a nice touch: He was William T. McManes, A.K.A. McMen. McManners, McMein, McMange, McMain, McManus, McMahon, McMane. (As far as I know, he managed to be consistent with the William.) James H. Kent, jeweller, is listed in the 1860-61 Pierson's directory of Newark as having gone West. He is back in Newark in 1869-70. No proven link, although one of my great-grandfather's sisters did marry William Kent, a son of Herny and Hannah Kent, in Millburn, N.J., in 1872. Finally, I wonder whether "companies of men" as my ancestor's group was described were ACTUALLY companies. That is, with a legal structure that might be recorded somewhere. All the best, Dave McMane
Hi All-- I located my great-great-grandfather in the 1900 census. I found he reported his parents born in France. When I ordered the marriage return from the State of New Jersey I got his father's name: Anthony WEHRLE, Sr. (he is Anthony WEHRLE, Jr.). My question is I need to find out the year of immigration for Anthony Wehrle, Sr. and I know that would be on a particular census? In 1891 (the year of the marriage return) Anthony WEHRLE, Jr. was living at 321 Market Street, Newark, NJ he was 37 years old and this was his second marriage. His father is listed as Anthony WEHRLE, Sr. no address. I am wondering if someone could look in a Newark City Directory to find out Anthony WEHRLE, Sr.'s address so that I can order the census. I also need to know what census year I should be concentrating on. Unfortunately, I can barely read Anthony WEHRLE, Sr.'s wife name--it "looks like" Catherine Miller or Millan. Thanks you all in advance for your time and interest! Kind Regards, Stacy L. (Wehrle) Yany stayc400@aol.com

I have a gap from about 1865 to about 1876 in knowledge of a male ancestor, born circa 1843, who spent some of his childhood in Morris County and later lived in Essex and Union counties. His newspaper obituary, of unproven reliability, suggests that he went prospecting in a company of about 40 men, and it mentions Arizona as a place he was in and California as a destination (unclear whether he made it to California). Does anyone else on the list have an ancestor from Essex County who prospected in the West, or who went missing around those dates? Thanks in advance for any help. Dave McMane Paris, France
I didn't know until a couple of hours ago that some of my family came from Essex Co., NJ. Does anybody out there have any info on the Clark family from Elizabeth, Essex Co. Also the Schmit family and Richey family from same town or close by...Joyce
If someone has access to the 1850 Census for Essex County, NJ, could you look up Robert STEWART at page 372, Plainfield or 308, Clifton. His wife, Mary, should be mentioned and some children, hopefully including John M. STEWART born about 1836. If these are of Robert and Mary, would you please send me the info contained therein. Thank you. Mona Hylton in Richmond, IN
Hi all, I'm forwarding this from the Hill list. While these names are not in my line, I know I've seen them on both of these lists in the past. Contact Donna directly for more information. I'm not sure what county Trenton is in, so if someone would forward it to the appropraite list that would be great. Hello ECR's, As you know, new "wrinkles" come up from time to time that I have to deal with. Recently I received an announcement (on my other list) for a Genealogical forum to be held for a fee by a non-profit organization. I've discussed this with some other listowners and found out their policies. As of today the new policy for this type of announcement will be: ANNOUNCEMENT POLICY The announcement must be for a non-profit organization promoting a Genealogical event. It must be specifically aimed at the Middlesex County Genealogist. It must contain the following information: Name of Organization Address of Organization Phone number of Organization Location of Event Purpose (including date, time and topics) Name of Contact person Email address of Contact person Fee, if any MOST IMPORTANTLY - the announcement for the event cannot be directly posted to the mailing list. It must be sent to me, as list administrator, for approval. When approved I, not the submitter, will post the announcement to the mailing list. Anyone who posts an announcement to the mailing list will be subject to being locked out of the mailing list. This policy does not include announcements about new mailing lists, surname lists, new personal web sites and similiar things that have to do with Essex County Genealogy. You can post them as usual. Any questions please send me personal email. I believe that I have covered most bases to protect the users of this mailing list from any unnecessary mailings. If anyone has any further suggestions please send them to me in a private email. As for any paid researchers, please send me the information and I will post it on the Essex County Genealogy Web Site. One further note, as you are aware of the Essex County Mailing list, as with all Rootsweb Mailing lists, is now a closed mailing list. This means that you have to be a member to post to it. This new policy of RootsWeb has saved you from six spam attempts in the past two weeks. The best one was from a World Famous (self proclaimed) Psychic. My question was, if she was a World Famous Psychic, why didn't she know the list was a closed list and her spam wouldn't go through. : ) Thank You for your cooperation, Glenn G. Don't live in NJ anymore (unfortunately) so don't have local library access. 18 Arlington St 170 Prince 17 Nicolson Thanks for the assistance.
I am searching for any reference to the subject surname, especially prior to 1784. Any assistance would be appreciated.
