Sounds like the Civilian Conservation Corps ( CCC). It was an FDR depression era program started about 1934 designed to provide useful employment, and a very small paycheck, (part of which was sent home to the family). Camps were built around the country, many in remote areas and young men were recruited to fill them. Usually members were sent quite a ways from home, probably to make it harder to quit. Initially, they were staffed by military and recalled former military cadres, who provided the leadership and discipline needed to get it running. The atmosphere was Spartan, food plentiful and the work hard and rewarding. Many of the projects that they undertook survive today in national and state parks. It was generally a successful program, but as the nation moved toward a wartime economy it was gradually disbanded. Amazing that a government program actually ended! -----Original Message----- From: ELLEN542@aol.com <ELLEN542@aol.com> To: NJESSEX-L@rootsweb.com <NJESSEX-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, February 12, 1999 10:48 PM Subject: CB's or CC's >Growing up I remember my Dad talking about being in the CC's or CB's. Growing up I remember my Dad talking about being in the CC's or CB's. Don't remember exactly but Mom said he was down South for awhile. This would have been in the late 1920's early 30's. He said it was some kind of civilian thing to do with the war. He was never in the service. Anybody have any idea of what this could be? Also once again I request a City Directory lookup for early 1900's the name is SCHOENWEISS or SCHONEWEISS. Not sure of the spelling. ellen542@aol.com
Is anyone researching the names Collard or Munson in Essex Co.? I am seeking the family of Emma Josephine Collard , who was born in July of 1856 . She married James Riley and they resided in Belleville . They named their son Charles Munson Riley , so it is possible she is related to that family. Mahalo-Kevin
Hi, Does anyone have information about the wards in Newark between 1880 and 1900? If not, where can I get that information? Thank you, Rita
Hello ECRs, I forgot to mention in my last post that I've put a Virus and Hoax Explanation page on the Essex County Genealogy Site: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~njessex/misc/virushoax.htm> Read it if you like and send me any questions or comments via personal email but PLEASE DO NOT send anything on the subject to the mailing list. Would anyone know of a list of WWI veterans and /or casualties from Essex Co. on the Internet , or do lookups? I am seeking information on Clifford Riley , born in Belleville or Newark in Dec. 1893 and possibly his brother James born in June , 1887. Mahalo-Kevin
Hello ECR's The Cemetery page on Virtual Newark has been updated to show three "new" cemeteries. The first is St. Mary's Cemetery. The existence of this cemetery was first questioned by Judy in No. Carolina. Judy and I exchanged email trying to pinpoint the cemetery. When we finally figured out where it would be Judy contacted Father Curley, who filled her in with the information. I then contacted Eric Brintzinghoffer and asked him to look in the LDS FHC files. Eric found the Microfilm numbers for the cemetery and they are now posted on the Cemetery page of VN. I would like to thank all involved for the discovery of this information. This will undoubtedly save people research time in the future. The second and third cemeteries are the First Presbyterian Church Cemetery (NOT the Old Burying Ground) and the Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery. References to these cemeteries were found in the book, "A Short History of Newark" by Frank Urquhart. I've also posted this information. At this time the information is very small. If anyone knows more about these cemeteries please contact me. Also the LOOKUPS page on the Essex County Genealogy Web Site has now been updated and made easier to read. All previous posted information that directed you to a source book was moved to the page with the entry. (i.e., the actual page where the other church information is). Please look over this page and if you have any other reference books that you can do lookups in please contact me and I'll add you name and book to the list. Thank You, Glenn G. Hello! I have just learned that the orphanage that some of my ancestors were in is St.Peters. As soon as I found out I went to the list of associations on the Virtual Newark site and noticed the note saying that the orphanage had moved and that records are in Denville, NJ. Does anyone know where in Denville? I went to the Denville webpage and could not find any trace of any place that might hold the records. Has anyone tried to get records from there? Any hints would be very helpful. I remember there was some discussion of orphanages lately (I think Catholic) but I didn't pay much attention because I thought I knew that they were not Catholic and that the information would not apply. That'll teach me!!! I appreciate your patience... Thank you!!! Laura

Hi, Anyone out there attend Bloomfield Vocational School or have a father, uncle, grandparent whatever who did in the years 1946,47,48? I am looking to locate a brother raised in the Belleville area and the newest lead I have is that he attended Bloomfield Vocational after one year at Belleville High. Hi, I am still looking for descendants of my DOYLE family. The first Doyle I have information on is Patrick Doyle. He was born 1831 in County Kerry, Ireland. He possibly immigrated to NYC before 1850. It is unknown if he traveled with family. In 1850 I believe he was living with a J.M. Devine family in NYC working as a clerk in a dry goods store. Patrick married Julia FARLEY before 1860, possibly in NYC. Julia might have been living in the household of John and Jane Gulick in 1850, NYC. Patrick and Julia had six children: John born 1860/61 NY; Philip born May 1864 NY, married Frances ??? abt. 1899, he died 28 Nov 1916; Julia born Feb 1865 NY, married George Ray; Lawrence born June 20, 1867, NY, died 5 Dec 1931 in San Diego, CA.; William born 1869/70, Newark, NJ; Rose Mary born May 15, 1877, Newark, NJ., married Clarence Wasson, she died 25 Nov 1942. Patrick died 20 Dec 1880 in Newark, NJ. Julia died in 1877 in Newark, NJ. I would like to correspond with anyone who might be researching this family. Kristy Kjag786@aol.com

Hi again, Still looking for my runaway ggrandfather. I would appreciate any clues on the trail. Orde Percival MARSHALL skipped town on his wife and 4 kids back in the 30's. I am tracking him down to Maplewood it seems. If any one could do a look up in whatever resources you may have, old phone books, censii, tax docs ,whatever, I would be truly grateful. I have access to the Essex Cty MASS census and could return your favor. The only info I have is that he was born in Nova Scotia in the 1880's and ran away from the Essex, Mass area, and that his brother (Ernest I think) went with him. He seems to have died in 1973. SSN# 137012990 ? Thanks Renay NH
