    1. Missing Link - "final papers"
    2. Well, believe it or not, in researching the answers to Estelle and Christine's questions, AFTER I posted, I also found the answer to mine about the "final papers" This was taken from www.nara.gov/genealogy/natural.html: "General Rule: The Two-Step Process Congress passed the first law regulating naturalization in 1790 (1 Stat. 103). As a general rule, naturalization was a two-step process that took a minimum of 5 years. After residing in the United States for 2 years, an alien could file a "declaration of intent" (so-called "first papers") to become a citizen. After 3 additional years, the alien could "petition for naturalization." After the petition was granted, a certificate of citizenship was issued to the alien. These two steps did not have to take place in the same court. As a general rule, the "declaration of intent" generally contains more genealogically useful information than the "petition." The "declaration" may include the alien's month and year (or possibly the exact date) of immigration into the United States." SOOO... the "Intent" was referred to as the "first papers" and the "petition" seems to be the prelude to the "naturalization" certificate. Okay, now is there a copy of the "petition" floating around? And exactly what would it say? AND THIS may help even more: "The second major exception to the general rule was that, from 1824 to 1906, minor aliens who had lived in the United States 5 years before their 23rd birthday could file both their declarations and petitions at the same time." 1. Naturalization and Declaration of Intent
    2. I am going to try to answer some of the questions I saw posted tonight from Estelle and Christine - please all, join me in assistance as I am not an expert and I really think we learn a lot by sharing not only our experience, but our inexperience too. First of all krstnwallce@wwnet.com wanted to know if this was a rare event (Naturalization). I am not sure what you meant Christine, but the Naturalization Papers were probably one of the greatest documents our immigrant ancestors received. These papers confirmed that the individual "be admitted to all the rights, privileges and immunities of A FREE CITIZEN of the United States of America." Also, if you are lucky enough (without having to search pages and pages of microfilm) to know the date of your ancestors Naturalization you can request a copy of it from the Clerk of Court of Newark (assuming they were sworn in there). I am not sure of an Index/Soundex (be careful with Soundex, it is exactly what it says, and may NOT be the exact surname you are looking for), but as to it saying "not much else", this may or may not be the case depending on the clerk recording the information. Some clerks recorded in detail (you find the same thing in the Census records) and others not. HOWEVER, from there you can also estimate the Declaration of Intent date which could tell you exactly were your ancestors were from. If you do not have any idea (in response to Estelle's query) when either one of these things may have happened, you may want to try to track them down by using the Census. Find out the first year they were counted and this will probably be fairly close to the date they declared their intention. Keep in mind that an individual DID NOT have to declare and receive their final papers in the same state, but a lot did due to the residency requirements. Of course, you can always go to one of the search services (although they charge, www.lineages.com is reasonable, however, some limit to what they search) and according to www.essexclerk.com/vault.html the County Clerk's Office in Newark will do a search for a very reasonable fee. Or go to your local Family History Center - or the closest large library you can find. You can order all kinds of records for a small fee from the FHC in microfilm or microfiche and the NARA has a microfilm rental program www.nara.gov/publications/microfilm/micrent.html which you can directly rent through them or through your local library. Dave from Long Island posted an interesting message tonight and I asked for clarification on it as the phrase "Certificate of Arrival" was new to me. I am hoping this will give us all a better clue as to what kind of new information will be out there. Just as a "PS" - In doing research on the Intent and Declaration papers, I found there was one additional step that seems to keep getting mentioned, although I can't figure out exactly what it means. Apparently between the Intent and the Declaration there were the "final papers". I had always thought that these were the Declaration papers, but after reading, I believe the "final papers" were exactly that and the Declaration was the document which was received after swearing allegiance. Can anyone help ME on this? Barbara

    1. Need Census lookup for ZELEVITCH 1910
    2. Hi, I need a lookup for frank Zelevitch in the 1910 census. He was living in Newark at the time with his wife Marie and had 3 children at the time. I believe the address was 62, Belmont in Wards 3, 9 and 14. The spelling could also be Zelewich on the census. Also being new to this what info would be needed to find Naturalization papers and declaration of Intention? Is that info kept in Newark also are they found in Newark? If anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance - Estelle

    3. Is this a rare event or should we all try it? My original question is if information on a relative is found on , lets say. the "Index/Soundex to Petitions for Naturalization NYC" and it includes name, year of naturalization but not much else does that mean there isn't much else? Or does it mean this is only a soundex/index and the writers only jotted a few things? Also, is there more information in the "intention to naturalize" papers (generally speaking)? 1. Certificate of Arrival
    2. On the certificate of arrival is: Federal Number Date of Arrival Name of Person Port of Arrival (in my father's case it was New York, NY) Type of Arrival (in my father's case it was "SS California") I was suprised to find the ship's name. Upon investigation, I found the California made regular trips between the Port of Glasgow and New York City and even managed to get a picture of the ship. Be careful and there were other ships named California before and after 1914 (his arrival date) and one named the Californian which was part of the Titanic story in 1912. Dave from Long Island

    3. I don't know if any of you are on the Brooklyn List but they have started a roll call of their Irish lines in honor of St Patrick's Day. They are making me feel very left out because my Brooklynites were German/Swedish. But my Hudson Co/Essex Co lines were Irish, moving from Newark into Harrison, NJ where, as a little girl, my grandfather had me believing the roads were painted green in celebration.
