    3. Hi Jane, It's nice to see someone else who has connections to Clinton, NJ. My Lindsley ancestors lived there in the 1800s and I am gradually learning more about them and this area. Clinton is now Irvington, NJ and part of Newark. The town (or at least parts of it) have been known as West Farms, Camptown, Clinton, then Irvington. In the 1870 census I found my Clinton ancestors listed in S. Orange, with a notation on the census page that the P.O. is Irvington. The first Irvington settlers arrived in the late 1600's, and many of them were the Connecticut families (or their offspring) who had founded Newark. I don't have any knowledge of your book, but would like to ask if it is indexed? If so, would you mind checking to see if there is a mention of any "Lindsleys"? Incidently, I was at the FHC today looking at the 1870 census and I seem to recall seeing a listing for Ira Gardner (& I think the occupation was "hatter") - was your ancestor still living in Clinton in 1870? 1. Clinton Township 1860 Census
    2. Jane R. Elliott
    3. Thanks to the voluntary "looker-uppers", I have determined that IRA GARDNER lived in Clinton Township in 1860 ! Maybe now there will be a marriage listing for SARAH JANE SMITH somewhere ! Does anyone know where the township records might be for Clinton ? (Not to be confused with the current Clinton in Hunterdon County !) I have a book called "Historical Collections of New Jersey : Past and Present authored by John W. Barber, assisted by Henry Howe, 1865 which apparently belonged to IRA GARDNER and then to his daughter, Edith Gardner Burnett (my grandmother). It describes Clinton Township as being formed from Newark, Elizabethtown and Orange in 1834, with a population of 3,676.It gives the boundaries in detail. Does anyone know anything about this book ? Is it a common volume ? It has 543 pages and a great deal of Indian and Revolutionary War history, as well as engravings. I'm anxious to unravel the mystery of what happened to the original Clinton ! Thanks for your help. Jane R. Elliott

    3. I have found a reference in an NJ census to a possible ancestor (My gggrandfatger was a Joseph Gilbert MARTIEN, born 1815 Albany NY) and would like to check the details in the census, but am unsure exactly what to look for. The information I have gathered is below. I gather the 1850 census is fairly large, and I want to make sure that if I order a peice of it (say from the latter day saints) it will be the correct one (or does one get the whole thing?). I would appreciate any suggestions that would make my search as maximally fruitful as possible. >From what I can gather from the data below the 1850 census was partial, but happened to incude NJ Essex Co. N Ward. From the rootsweb NJ site I gather that Essex Co was on roll 449 or 450, is this a meaningful or useful peice of information. Any suggestions, pointers etc. greatly appreciated. 2. Lise Doss
    3. Hi, Tonight I found out my great grandmother, Mary Ellen QUINLAN KIRNER, was the daughter of Jeremiah QUINLAN and Mary McCORMACK. She was probably born about 1865 in the NY metro area. She probably also had a brother Jeremiah QUINLAN, since there was one born in 1870, died in 1925. Her death certificate says her father was born in the US and her mother was born in Ireland. Do these names sound familiar to anyone? Thanks, Lise Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    2. I wonder if anyone out there can help? I am trying to get hold of copies of The Genealogy Magazine of New Jersey, vol. 47, # 1 and 2 and also vol. 48 #1. The articles are concerning the Osborne Family. My local Illinois library and its lending partners have no-one that carries it. Does anyone know of a book dealer that might have back issues? or perhaps someone have back issues they no longer want ( I know, not likely :) ) I fear that a library would not be willing to copy whole articles because of copyright problems... 2. Joan
    3. I'm doing a research on myh BROWER/MOORE families and have found that my great great grandparents (GARRET BROWER of Acquackanock/Little Falls, NJ) and (RUTH MOORE of Warren, NJ) married 8/2/1821 by the Minister of the Gospel at New Providence, Essex County, NJ. RUTH MORE was the daughter of ISAAC MOORE and (LYDIA BEDELL - she was ISAAC's 2nd wife). LYDIA'S father was MOSES BEDELL and her grandfather was DAVID LITTLE. ISAAC's father was JOHN MOORE. If possible, I'm anxious to make a connection with these BROWER/MOORE families - BEDELL/BEDLE - LITTELL/LITTLE. I'm hoping someone out there may be able to share some information with me. I have loads of research already done but my main concern right now is to find the parents of GARRET. I've not been lucky with this one! Thank you for any help you may be able to give me. If unable to share with me, perhaps you could point me in the right direction. Thanks again for your help. Ruth Joan Gilmore 27 Arlene Court Bricktown, NJ 08724 E-Mail; ARC@webspan.net

    2. William Zeigler
    3. Greetings! I'm looking for any information on my "Prussian" ancestors that emigrated to Newark, NJ in 1869. Friedrich Wilhelm SOMMER and Emilie (WESTER) SOMMER listed Prussia as their place of origin in the 1870 US Census. Their children Charles, Lydia Augusta, and Frederick were also listed as being from Prussia. Their other children, William, Adelheides, Hulda, Minnie, and Otto, were born in Newark. I believe that I found them in the Germans to America book, volume 23, arriving in New York from Bremen on 23 September 1869 on the ship Smidt. They are listed as being from Wurtemberg. Friedrich filed a Declaration of Intention on 26 October 1874 declaring against the Emperor of Germany. I will accept any and all suggestions, rumors, ideas, advice, and leads! Thanks in advance! 2. William Zeigler
    3. Greetings! I've been lurking for quite some time and have enjoyed the collective spirit. I finally have enough time to add my measley crumbs! I'm researching my grandfather's father, Charles BROCK, living in Newark, NJ. He was born November 1866 or 1867 and died 2 April 1899. He married Lydia Augusta SOMMER and they had one child, my grandfather, Frederick William BROCK. He joined the Newark police department in 1894. Lydia and Frederick moved to California after Charles died. The death certificate lists his birthplace as NJ and Rudolph and Ida BROCK as his parents, both from Germany. I think I found him in the 1870 Federal Census with parents Frederick and Julia BROCK and again in 1880 with parents and brothers Walter, Hugo, and Max. The 1885 NJ State Census lists Frederick, Julia, Charles, Walter, Hugo, Max, Emma, and Fred. The 1895 NJ State lists Walter, Hugo, Max, and Frederick. Any and all help would be appreciated. Advice and suggestions would be welcome! Bill Zeigler San Diego, CA wzeigler@home.com

    1. Growlers Club, Thanks
    2. Thanks to all of you who responded to my question. There was a clear consensus that a 'growler' was a vessel, like a bucket, used to bring home draft beer at the end of the work day. 'Rushing the growler' was the act of getting the 'growler' filled. Unfortunately, no one had heard of the Growlers as an organization that existed in the late 1800s. Please keep me in mind if you come across any info. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- ORIGINAL QUESTION: Has anyone heard of the 'Growlers?' I have a copy of an 1886 membership certificate for one of my relatives. Based on the name of the organization, one can only imagine what its purpose was. Can anyone shed some light? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- Ted George T (Ted) Pierce rpfamily@concentric.net
