Looking for info on a Klesspiess family from Newark, NJ around 1860. My gr.gr. grandmother was a Mary(ianna) Klesspiess. I have just recently discovered that she had 2 sisters. Am looking for info on this whole family. Her two sisters were Anna Maria Klesspies married to an August Lange in April 1860 at St. Mary's church. Her other sister was Eva Klesspiess who married a Joseph Kistner on June 24, 1860. Any help would be appreciated. Judy in NC

Hi Listers!! Was hoping someone might have heard of SMITH & SMITH Funeral Home, Newark, NJ, ca. 1925. This funeral home is listed on (2) of my grandparents death records... Was hoping someone might have heard of them, or would know if another funeral home might have their records.. Hello ECRs, The LDS FHC now has on-line a searchable catalogue of their Newark resources. Due to this I will be discontinuing the listing of their Microfilm Numbers on both the Essex County Web Site and Virtual Newark. The URL for obtaining the search is at: <http://www.familysearch.com/Search/searchcatalog.asp> Just put Newark in the box. Good Luck, Glenn G. I saw a query about undertakers and wondered what any of you would know about the undertaker by name of C.H Terrell. They were in Irvington. My great grandmother Mary Agnes Osborn was buried from there. I don't know where she was buried and would love to find out. The date of death was January 11th 1895. Any help would be wonderful. Hi, I'm new at this and I just started searching for my family. My Family name is PICENO. If anyone has any information I would appreciate any help given. My family came from Newark NJ, and I was born there also. My grandparents Lorenzo Piceno and Addulorata DeMaio came over on the SS Hesperia arriving in New York on April 17, 1899 . They settled in Newark, NJ. Anyone knowing any more information on these families? Thank you sbrady2024@aol.com
Hello ECRs, The Virtual Newark pages have been officially moved to the new site and the old site closed. I have added more information, pictures and have much more to add. This will take place over the next few months. I also have added the Ward information for the following dates: 1850, 1860, 1870, 1895, & 1915. The Ward information for 1880 & 1905 will be added soon. If you can't wait, email me and I'll look it up for you. The Essex County pages have basically remained the same. I'll be looking for volunteers for each city in the county. What I'd like them to do is research the history of the city as to what churches, cemeteries, associations, etc. were there so that they can be added to the site. If anyone else can transcribe any information at all about something in the county please contact me. I have added a promising new paid researcher to the Essex County Web Site. His name is Michael O. Anderson. Here is the opening blurb from his web site: "Research at the U.S. National Archives can be very rewarding for anyone seeking information or documents on their family history or The Civil War. While engaging in my own personal research in these areas, I realize what an asset it is to be located near the primary National Archive that has historical resources no other archives have in the U.S., and now I would like to assist others by researching a host of primary sources in the following areas at the National Archives." His web address is: <http://www.impactvr.com/DCResearch/> Stop by it and see what he has to offer. The GenConnect Query/Information Forums are undergoing a renovation. It has nothing directly to do with the County Sites, only the Surname Sites. Because of this I will be working on my Surname Sites (I administer 4 surname sites) to get them up and going so I may be a little late in answering any questions sent to me. Information on the renovation was in last weeks RootsWeb Review. Since it has nothing to do with this mailing list please do not discuss it here. If you have any questions on it just send me email. And lastly, for those of you who have waded through my update, I have acquired a 1940 City Directory. I am able to do lookups for you in the following categories, ancestor names (both first and last names only!), associations (only if they existed and where), if you know the address of your ancestor, I can tell you who else lived in the building (the book is missing pages on this so I can only go from Abbotsford Ave to North Seventh Street), and the other typical City Directory listings. IMPORTANT, please put "DIRECTORY LOOKUP" in the subject line. Please remember I cannot scan the directory so keep you ancestor names to first and last names only. Thank You and Good Luck, Glenn G. Geisheimer, Iselin, New Jersey: glenng@castle.net If I've been able to point you in a direction, please email me with your results so that I may help other researchers. Tip: Using the Microfilm/Microfiche Number Search on FamilySearch.org One of the handiest features on the new FamilySearch website is the online catalog of the Family History Library. There are several ways to search this catalog, and the microfilm/microfiche number search can be extremely useful for researchers who are trying to verify data they have found in family collections, in family histories, and in such compilations as the Ancestral File. In many of these instances, the original compiler of the data often gave sketchy source references to the data, such as "Boston church records" or "Alabama county marriages", including an FHL microfilm number rather than a full bibliographic reference. Now you can use the microfilm/microfiche number search on FamilySearch to follow up on these vague source references. Just type in the FHL number of the film or fiche, and you can get a full list of the items on the film, and links to more complete descriptions of each item. This in turn may lead to a full list of other rolls of film if it is part of a series, such as a census schedule. Resource: FamilySearch http://www.familysearch.org
I recently went through the 1910 census looking for orphanages in hopes of locating my husband's great grandmother. Unfortunately many of the lists were illegible but I think that I may have found her in St. Mary's Orphanage. In any case, I photocopied the lists for the Newark Orphan Aslyum and for St. Peter's Orphan Asylum. The St. Mary's list was barely legible on the microfilm reader, and not legible at all on the photocopy. If anyone would like me to look through the lists for the Newark or St. Peter's Orphan Asylums to check for ancestors I would be happy to do that. The census gives the name, age and sex of the orphan, and in some cases where the orphan and his/her parents were born. Please email me directly with the name of the orphan, and some idea of his/her age. I'll let you know what I find. Laura
Re St Patrick's Cathedral, the staff is apparently not able to spend much time on research. The church records are available from LDS Family History Centers if you order microfilms #1398552 [1850-1885] 1398553 [1885-1926].. These films are also at the Newark Archdiocesan Archives at Seton Hall University, but there are only two or three machines and you have to make an appointment about 5-6 months in advance. If you know the exact dates I'm sure you could get standard certificates from the Archives in relatively short time. I am looking for information about the family of William K. Gray and Fanny Grannis. William K. Gray was probably born in East Orange, NJ in about 1822. Fanny Grannis was b. about 1827 in Goshen, Orange County, NY, and died after 1889. They were married in 1845 in Goshen. Their children were: William K. Gray, a doctor, b. about 1850 Richardson Gray, a doctor, b. 6/20/1852 in Mine Mount, Bernards Twp, Somerset, NJ Neptune C. Gray, b. about 1854 Thomas Claughley Gray, b. 3/10/1854 in Liberty Corner, Bernards Township, Somerset Mary Gray (later Sanger ) b. 1856 possibly in Goshen, NY Edward Gray b. about 1858 Henry Gray b. May 6, 1858 in Madison, Chatham Twp., Morris County, NJ Thomas N. Gray, b. before 1853. This family seems to have been fairly well-educated. Many of them were doctors, and some practiced in and around East Orange. I have much additional information about them, but nothing back beyond William and Fanny. Is anyone else working on these Grays? Please contact me directly (taravb@bigfoot.com) so that we can exchange information! Thanks! I need ideas!!! I believe that Lewis Oliver is my husband's ggggrandfather. I am having trouble finding info in the usual sources for him. This is what I have found: Entry in 1840 census, Newark Entry in 1850 census, Newark (with wife Mary and children Anna, Gertrude, Theodore, and Mary) Deeds: assorted, between 1847 and 1855. Lewis M. and his wife Mary B. seemed to buy property and then resell it at a nice profit a month or two later. The last deed that listed him was in 1855. He was somehow involved in a piece of land that was auctioned off by the sheriff as a result of a court case heard in Trenton. City directory: listed as painter and grocer (alternating) between 1844-1880 (at the end only his address appears). In 1879 his wife Mary has her own entry at the house they were living at in 1878, then in 1880 there is only his name again, with the address given for him in 1879. The family does not appear in the indices for the 1860 or 1870 census, and I have not gone throught the 1880 census yet since they probably do not have children under age ten that would cause them to be in the soundex. I was unable to located births or marriages for Lewis and his children. His daughter Mary (if it is the same one who married my husband's gggrandfather, George LIMBURGER) is listed in the Newark city directory until 1918, where it says "removed to Rochester, NY." I found no death record for her in NY, nor any sign of her in Rochester, NY. She was also not listed again in the Newark directory. I haven't found anything that would point to a particular religion or church for this family. It has all been quite difficult because Mary's daughter (whose death certificate I also cannot find) died young, orphaning my husband's great grandmother at one or two years old. There is no oral or written family history to provide me with any clues. The only thing that I even have that suggests that my husbands gggrandmother is connected with this family is the fact that several documents cite that she was born in Newark in 1844, which corrolates with the age of the Mary Oliver listed as Lewis' daughter. I went through all of the Oliver families listed for Newark for 1850, 1860, and 1870 and Lewis M. Oliver was the only potential candidate for being her father. Does anyone have any ideas? I would really appreciate any input that you could offer. Thank you in advance! Laura
Trying to find out where my HARDEN family were before they were in Sussex Co, NJ. A cousin told me that her father told her that the THOMAS HARDEN family were dunkers. My GGrandmother wrote that she thought they were of Dutch decent. So were any of the Dutch Brethern? Seems to me if they were Dutch, they should have a berg, brook or borgh on the end of their name. Thomas Harden b. ca 1750, not sure where. Resided in Sussex Co, NJ from 1781 to 1814/15 then removed to Guernsey Co, Ohio where he died in 1824. Thomas married Janett ?, maybe Denman. Greetings Essex co listers Had two more returns for NJ Vital Stats: One was a good one = only problem was that while all the info matched my gt grand father there was no name! Must have been a situation where his parents didn't know what to call their newborn son !!! Real problem with the other and someone in a past message had some ideas. My gd mother's birth record for 1881-1883 apparently doesn't exist!! I know from hetr marriage (and other) license that it had to be in that time period and in the Jersec City area. What does one do now!!! Her marriage license says she was born in Jersey City. Any suggestions from those of you know the NJ scene? Thanks for any suggestions you might have. I recently sent a marriage and baptism search request for a few ancestors to the Roman Catholic church St. Patrick Cathedral (old) in New York City. I received a listing and copies of index cards on possible matches. The church has requested a $15.00 donation (extremely reasonable)for the Search. So far, none of the names is a match for me, but I thought it might help someone else if I transcribed them. This is the only information I have. Please be sure to send your own donation to the church if you'd like the original certificate.
