Hi All, Has anyone has any experience in retrieving records from insurance companies particularly life insurance policies from 1870-1920. Are there any texts out there dealing with the histories of insurance companies that anyone know about? Thanks, Isobel Berry- BerryCulp@msn.com

Hello ECRs, Six days ago a new resource was created for researchers, the Essex County Resource Page. The URL is: <http://resources.rootsweb.com/USA/NJ/Essex/> I won't go into the details of the page here, please feel free to check it out. There is also a link to it from the Essex County Genealogy Web Page. With this new resource I thought some of you may be confused as to who is who in this part of the Genealogy World, so here are a few descriptions. (the descriptions are mine, so they may not be "official" descriptions) RootsWeb - This is the server that the county mailing lists (NJESSEX) are on. In addition to the county mailing lists, RootsWeb is home to a large portion of the USGenWeb Project County Genealogy Sites (Essex County Genealogy), surname mailing lists, the newly created County & Surname Resource Pages, GenConnect Surname Forums and other Genealogy sites (Cyndi's, Black Sheep, The Olive Tree to name a few). The County Mailing Lists are stand alone mailing lists, meaning that there is no hierarchy of power. Each individual ListOwner controls his/her list and defines exactly what is appropriate on it. For more information on Rootsweb, go to this URL: <http://www.rootsweb.com/> For more information on the mailing lists, go to this URL: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/> The USGenWeb Project - This is a volunteer organization made up of thousands of members, each providing a web site for a county in the United States. Although RootsWeb is the server this organization is housed on, it is not it's governing body. The USGenWeb Project has a hierarchy, the County Coordinators answer to the State Coordinator who answers to the Regional Coordinator who answers to the US Coordinator. Although most RootsWeb County Mailing Lists are "owned" by the USGW CC for that county, this is not always the case and technically they have nothing to do with each other. For more information of the USGW Project, go to this URL: <http://www.usgenweb.org/index.html> WorldGenWeb - This provides the same information as the USGW Project but on a global scale. Neither organization is affiliated with the other. For more information on the WorldGenWeb, go to this URL: <http://www.worldgenweb.org/> GenConnect Forums - These are query & informational forums for surnames grouped by surnames and surnames grouped by area. You can search each individual forum for your surname or you can do a global search for your surname. The Surname Helper Query Forums, the USGenWeb Project and the WorldGenweb are also included in the global search feature. Every county in the United States now has a GenConnect Forum as well as over 15000 surnames. When using the GenConnect Forums, please remember that ONLY the query forum is for posting questions. The informational forums are for the posting of information, no questions are allowed. For more information on GenConnect, go to this URL: <http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/index.html> For more information on the GenConnect Surname Resource Pages, go to: <http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/> For more information on the GenConnect County Resource Pages, go to: <http://resources.rootsweb.com/USA/> For more information on the GenConnect World Wide Forums, go to: <http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/qindex.html> I think that about covers it, if you have any questions please contact me via my personal email address and not on the list. Tyring to find out whether Mildred and Charles Cook had descendents--to invite to family reunion. They lived in Montclair for years, although Mildred died in Neptune when they lived in Brielle. She died Dec 15, 1976 and Charles died in Dec 1979. My brothers checked the Montclair Library for obits in the Montclair Times last Saturday. None found. Might obits be in Newark Star Ledger, Jersey Journal or Asbury Park Press? None of us live nearby, and my brothers had checked cemeteries for other relatives Sat. and had no time to check other papers. Any suggestions? I appreciate any help. Thanks. I'M the daughter of Fred Piceno and Edna Plagge. I'm trying to find members of my family. Mother and Father are both deceased. Was born and raised in Newark. My Grandfather is Lorenzo Fredricko Piceno, born in Italy March 1873 and my Grandmother was Addulorata Delorado DeMaio. My Father had many brothers and sisters and the oldest one was born in Italy. They came over to the United States from Naples on the SS Hesperia and arrived in New York in 1899. Anyone RELATED or knowing any thing about these names would be greatly appreciated. (PICENO & DEMAIO) Any help you can give me will be GREAT! Thank You Fran sbrady2024@aol.com
Hi, Fred Waldmann *@1831 owned theaters in Newark. I am looking to know if he appears in Census records before 1880. In 1880 he lived at 64 Nelson place... but owned/ managed Waldmann theater at Market and Halsey. At that location it appears in directories that a number of Waldmanns lived and worked. Would appreciate any earlier census lookup to determine wife's name and children's age. I am in STL and can share info from my library if that would be helpful. Thanks, Dave Dhwaldmann@aol.com

Wondering if someone with access to the 1860 and 1870 census for New Jersey would be willing to lookup a family for me? Family name is DEVAUSNEY. I don't know the husband's given name, but the wife's name would be Anna Catherine or just Anna or just Catherine. She was born 20 March 1838. Our family believes this family lived in Newark. Thank you. Marcia Bernheisel MBernheise@aol.com
David Henry Waldmann in 1900 worked for the S. Klaber Co. as a stone cutter and polisher. Does anyone know what type of stones the company produced???? Were they grave markers? Diamonds? Statues? Any employee records?
When I was in grade school I went to St. Antoninus School on 9th St and So Orange Ave. The Little Sister of the Poor had a convent about a block away. I know it was on the corner of 9th Street but don't remember the other street, I could guess and say maybe 12th Avenue. ellen gilroy
Here's a place to look: if David Sachs had an accidental death, there might be a Coroner's Inquest filed in Newark or NYC, if that's where he died. My grandfather's brother was killed by a horse and wagon in 1895 in NYC and the coroner's office investigated. There might also be an article about the accient in a newspaper. Don't know about Warren Street in 1890, but I have the 1910 Newark Street Directory. Warren St. went from 99 Halsey St. NW to 596 Orange. In 1910, 421 Warren Street would have been between Fairmount Avenue and Littleton Avenue. Sally Bursch Cihos
Hi Rita, I would assume that Little Sisters was a nursing home. On the 1905 Census all the residents (approx. 250) are listed at being over 60. Maureen Knapp De Bolle St. Augustine, Fl.
I tried to pull up Warren St. on Mapquest and would not let me do so. Can SKS tell me where Warren St. (#421) was located back in the late 1890s. Thanks Judy In NC

They do not give wards, but quite possibly you could connect a few as they do have some addresses or addresses in their names. Not much, but it's something I guess - sorry. Barbara

If so, could you please look up Robert FELDWEG for me? In the 1870 Newark directory he was the only Feldweg. The 1870 census does not show addresses. Thanks a lot, Lise >> Lise, Sorry, but the 1870 has no index - it is completely listed by wards - you can find out more about which census' have soundex listings at - http://www.nara.gov/publications/microfilm/census/census.html If you look at the street address listed for your ancestor, you will be able to determine which ward it was in by looking in the beginning of the directory where it lists the street names (although some of the older directories do not list them) or you can try -http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~geishome/ Glenn has provided many of the wards for 1870 on his Newark page. Holy Sepulchre is in East Orange, not South Orange. Good luck in your search. My Irish relatives are all buried in Holy Sepulchre. My German relatives are in St. Mary's in East Orange and Woodland in Newark. In the 1900 census, he no longer in listed. How can I find out when he died and where he is buried? I believe they may have attended St. Peters in Newark, but I can't find a microfilm number for their death records(if they kept them). Any help will be appreciated. Pat from Idaho >> The archives in Seton Hall University may tell you. I found bapt. registrations there from that time period. You may check Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in South Orange for a burial. Hi, Does anyone know if the sisters had a convent in Newark in 1926. On of my husband's gaunts died 1n 1926 and on the death certificate it only says Little Sisters. She is buried with the family, so could it be something like a nursing home or a hospice? I put the title in parenthesis because I'm not sure of the complete title. Would appreciate any help. Thank you, Rita
Hello. I am looking for information about the Barretto family. Gerard Morris Barretto was born ca. 1876 in Millburn. His brothers were named Laurence and Arthur and his sister's married name was Mrs. Kerr Eby. I would be grateful to hear anything you might know about them. Thank you, Stephanie Colorado
