    1. [NJESSEX] Potters Field under garbage dump
    2. Study Find More Graves Under Garbage NEWARK,N.J. (AP)_ A potter's field that became a garbage dump contains more than twice as many bodies than the 18,000 originally thought, a new study says. And it is possible the sliver of land in an industrial area near the airport and an Anheuser-Busch brewery could hold as many as 200,000 bodies, according to the study done by Malcolm Pirnie, a White Plains,N.Y. environmental engineering firm. The city ordered the study as part of a court ordered restoration of City Cemetery, where people without the money to pay for a funeral were buried between 1869 and 1954. Sometime after the last burial, the city began using the Cemetery as an industrial storage yard, then as a public dump. It's condition was publicized last year when an 85 year old Hackensack woman sued the city after learning that her father was buried there in 1921. Newark officials have found no burial records, but the Malcolm Pirnie report says metal grave markers and perhaps tombstones are buried beneath the trash, and that it "is reasonable to assume" that there 39,000 to 40,000 are buried at the 5.2 acre cemetery, and perhaps as many as 200,000. Eugene Boesch, the archaeologist who conducted the study, recommended that ground-penetrating radar be used this fall to locate graves. Boesch also suggested that the city plant grass and shrubbery, erect a monument to the dead and produce a booklet on the cemetery's history. The restoration is expected to cost more than $1 million.' I saw this this morning and was very interested. I am looking for my husband's ggmother who is not buried in Holy Sepulcher with the rest of the family. I am waiting for a film at the FHC to see if she is possible buried with her parents. She predeceased her husband by 18 years and now I wonder if she might be in this gravesite because he did not have the money to buy a grave. What a mess! Rita

    1. [NJESSEX] Obituary request
    2. Hello, Does any kind person out there have access to the Orange, NJ Public Library? I need to have two obituaries looked up - I have exact dates of death, etc. I called the library today and apparently their microfilm machine that can produce copies is out of commission, and has been for three years! They have written a grant to try to get the machine fixed but haven't heard yet. Bottom line is that they can't help me. If anyone can go to the library and look these two obits up I would be very grateful, to say the least. Please Email me directly if you can help out. Thanks, Dave in California

    3. Hi all, I am looking for the family of Abigail Allen b. c 1740 d.2/13/1822. She is listed a being "of Hanover" in the 1954 NYGBR article on Peter Smith descendants and married Uriah Smith on 3/28/1770 in Hanover, Morris Co., NJ according to the Hanover Presbyterian Church records. Uriah was b. 1734 and d. 5/6/1816 in either Hanover or Northfield/Livingston NJ. They named their children as follows: Uriah, Joseph, Peter, William, Isaac, Allen, Elizabeth (m. ___Lyon) and Mary (m. ___Wade). I am trying to find Abigail's ancestry as well as confirm the marriage of her daughter Mary to Nathaniel Wade (of Jonathan). I would be grateful for any assistance you may be able to provide, either directly or by pointing me in the direction of likely resources. I am hoping to get to MEHGS in the next few days and would love to be able to dig up some information on these families. Thank you so kindly, Kathleen Pantano kpantano@hotmail.com kpantano@msn.com _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. 3. A book was published called Records of Officers and Men of NJ in Wars 1791-1815. In the book there is reference to Thomas Penn-Musician, Capt. Henry H. Van Dalsem's Company; enlisted Feb 16, 1813 for eighteen months; discharged Aug. 11, 1814, expiration of service; re-enlisted at Elizabeth, NJ, as private in Capt. Jacob D. Howell's Company, Nov. 21,1814 for five years; transferred to Captain Armstrong Irvine's company H, Light Artillery, Oct 1, 1815; discharged Oct. 26, 1816; inability. I filled out the form for National Archives for copies of veterans records, but it was sent back 'unable to locate file'. Did I request records from the wrong place? Is there anyone out there who is familiar with these Company's and can help guide me in finding Thomas Penns' military records? Appreciate any information... Linda in Colorado

    3. Hello ECRs, In the past few days I've had a few private emails discussing cemeteries. >From them I've been able to update the Virtual Newark Cemetery page. Also I'd like to point out that it is imperative that you make sure you check the cemetery records and not just view a grave site for information. In many cases, family plots do not have headstones/markers for everyone buried there. Personally, my great-great grandfather & grandmother are buried in the family plot of their daughter's second husband without any headstones. In another case my great-great grandfather (different one) is buried in the family plot of his second wife. Although he is listed on the obelisk marking the site, two other internments are not. Woodland Cemetery update - Internments are now logged through 1965. Email Mary Lish for lookups. Good Luck in your research, ------------ Glenn G. 3. Hello Dru, I would check the non-denominational cemeteries in addition to the Catholic Cemeteries (Mt. Olivet RC Cemetery). Have you checked the 1895 NJ State Census and the 1900 Federal Census to see if he still was alive in those years? You also could check the Newark City Directories. This would get you, at least, the year of his death. >I need to find my gg-grandfather. I've lost him!! 3. Hi Fellow ECR's, I'm in a dilemna I don't know how to solve, and I'm hoping some of your expertise will come in handy. I need to find my gg-grandfather. I've lost him!! I assumed (and was erroneously told by the cemetary) that he is buried with his wife at Holy Sepulchre. NOT!! Many of the family members are buried in this plot, but not him. His name, btw, is Patrick Cousins. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to find him? I can't send for his death certificate if I don't have any idea when he died. I do know he was still alive in 1894. I'm really stumped here. I'm wondering if there were other Catholic cemetaries around 1900 in Newark. I will check the Virtual Newark pages again on this. If so, why wouldn't he just be buried with his wife? And where's the rest of the family?? Oh, it's always more and more questions. <g> Thanks for your suggestions. Dru Beesley dbeesley@iol15.com
