    2. Robert Trimmer 301-827-5848 FAX 301-594-0180
    3. "S.B." could be an American abbreviation for "Saengerbund" (Sängerbund) which was/is a singing group (using the German language) that was very common throughout the US in small and large towns up to ~1915. We have an active "Saengerbund" here in Washington DC and just heard them perform last fall (singing German & Swiss folk songs and "Lieder" (songs) of Schubert, Beethoven, et al.). A singing group of just men would usually be called a "Maennerchor" (Männerchor). Bob in Germantown MD

    3. Yes, the Sp. Am. was was over by 1911. What I think you may be refering to is someone who did Border Service. I have not researched this but I have medal that belonged to my Grandfather. It was awarded for having served at the border. I was told by my father that it was Mexican Border Service. I have the medal here. This is what it says: City of East Orange NJ (that is across the top of rounded edge) To Battery C For Border Service 1916-1917 (that is across the bottom) I think this is a National Guard medal. I really should check it out. I hope this might help. Cynthia jccjae@triton.net cynsheehan@yahoo.com

    1. [NJESSEX] Suevia Co., No.30, Germania S.B.
    2. Hi, Can anyone help identify what the Suevia Co. was? Charles Waldmann has in his obit of 23 Mar 1886 that members of Suevia Co. are invited to attend the funeral.... Am I correct in believing No. 30, Germania S. B. would be a German singing group of South Bergen????? Are there records of the group ...history not music :-/ Was Suevia Co. a sub division of Germania or a firm he worked for?????? Appreciate learning... Dave in STL Dhwaldmann@aol.com

    3. Hi, The National Archives would have the records. You can order the microfilm of the soldier's names from the LDS family history center, then order the records from the NARA. But I'm sure the war was over long before 1911! Regards, Lise _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Visit http://www.msn.com

Now we are looking for the correct William MILLER out of at least four that are listed in the "NJ Rateables, 1778-1780, Elizabeth Twp., Westfield Ward" by Ken Stryker-Rodda. A leading contender seems to be William MILLER 3rd, listed in grave 476, died 8 Apr 1780 at 37 yrs, in "Inscriptions from the Cemetery of the Presbyterian Church at Westfield in NJ" as copied from tombstones in 1899 by George W. If this was Massa's husband, her action to join the the church and have the family baptized in September after his untimely death in April is certainly understandable. Questions: 1. 2. Carolyn Coughlin & Joe Gruchacz
    3. I have written the state vital records for the following birth certificates. They responded with their certificate that states there is no record of the birth in the years requested. Can anyone do a lookup for me or give me some clues on what else I can do? I assume there was some kind of mixup maybe the children weren't named until after the certificate was filed. THERESA GRUCHACZ parents MARYAN GRUCHACZ and BRONISLAWA KURKIEWICZ. According to her death certificate, she was born January 19, 1930. Her tombstone says 1931. Probably born in Bloomfield – for sure Essex County. The spelling of GRUCHACZ has been fairly consistent (I have seen one Gruchach) ALEXANDRA or APOLONIA or PAULINE KURKIEWICZ (I’ve seen all three first names on different documents) parents FRANK KURKIEWICZ and JULIA BLUDAJ. Baptism records say she was born October 18, 1904. Parents lived in Newark probably on Boyd Street. Both her parents were dead by 1918 and some church records indicate she may have been adopted. I don’t believe either of her parents learned English and they may have been illiterate. I’ve seen many spellings of KURKIEWICZ (Kurkisnicz and Kookinonh) but all that I have identified started with a "K" . Thanks for your help. Carolyn in Texas grucog@txdirect.net

    2. Gail & Harry Benson
    3. Estelle, Not sure about start date for Columbia HS, but I would try the school itself for old yearbooks. Usually, they try to keep that sort of thing in the high school library or office. Many times, not a complete run. Permanent school records are supposed to be kept by the district/school that the student last attended. In this case, South Orange-Maplewood. If a student quit school, the records would be at the last school attended (middle school/junior hs, etc.) Records that are required may be minimal. AND....... many districts did not keep them. I may venture to say most. I haven't tried to obtain any myself, just know the record requirement.
