If someone has access to the Newark City Directories, I would greatly appreciate a check to see if there was a George A C Barnett living there in the 1883-84 time frame. It is also possible that the head of the household was Oliver Barnett. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks. George Pierce George T (Ted) Pierce rpfamily@concentric.net
I am seeking information on BARNETTs from the Newark, Essex County, NJ area, from the late 1700s to the mid 1800s. The BARNETTs I know about are described below, but I am interested learning about earlier BARNETTs from that area that may have been ancestors -- kind of trying to form a link by working from both ends. My BARNETTs start with David BARNETT and sons, John and William, living in Newark, NJ in the early 1820s. William went to MA and married Nancy Wheeler in 1826 in Medway. Daughter Anna was born 1827 in NJ. Son Henry was born 1831, daughter Matilda born 1833, and William born 1837, all in MA. By 1840, the family was back in NJ with a 3rd child, George AC, born 1839 in Rahway, NJ. Matilda returned to Boston and never married. Anna, Henry, and Warren are mysteries. William and George served together in the Civil War in Hawkin's Zouaves. William was killed in action, but George survived and had a long life as an attorney in New York City. He died in 1914, and was my great-grandfather. Also seeking other relatives, Oliver Barnett and son Edward, who lived in NY and NJ around 1850-1910. Anyone connect? Any suggestions? Thanks. Hi, I am new to this list and am looking for Mabel Price who lived in Newark most of her life and I think she died around 1979-85. I need the time of death to send for death certificate. Would some one check a directory so I could get a year that she was last in the phone book? I would appreciate this help. I am also looking for other information on any of the surname listed below. Please E-Mail me privately. Many Thanks RUTAN,BLAUVELT, GOLDSMITH, ACKERMAN, DEVORE, HANKE, PRICE, MCCALL, BRETT. RYERSON, EVANS, SMITH, HAMMA, TURTON, REOCK, WOODRUFF
Hello to all on this Labor Day weekend! I recently received the death certificate of my great grandmother, who died in Newark, and the burial place is listed as "C.H.S.". I am guessing that this is the "Cemetery of the Holy Sepulchre", but does anyone else have another idea? I just want to be sure before I start making phone calls! Thanks! Dave Kane
Hi, I have an article about theaters in Newark, Ledger 1936, it states," In 1913, the Shubert brothers,... erected what is now known as the Shubert Theater, on Branford pl. The area was orginally a graveyard for the First Presbyterian Church on Broad st., and was afterward taken over for the establishment of a hook and latter fire-truck house..." Hello again list: Does anyone have access to city directories for the town of Newark? I need to find out where my father was living from 1925 to 1939. Any years mention would be appreciated. I'm not too familiar with directories, and I hope this is not asking too much. I was told that directories have some great information on them sometimes. His name is Peter ZELEWITZ and the 1940 directory showed him at 444 Orange Street in Newark living with Estelle ZELEWITZ. I am trying narrow down the area when and where he got married to his first wife and from there to see if they had any children together. He never told my mother, probably due to the fact that she deserted him while in WW2. The old dear John thing. Could someone let me know what information is found in these Directories, again I never used them personally. Thanks in advance, Estelle Boca Raton, Florida
It ususally takes about 4-6 weeks. Hello List: I would like to thank all of you who responded to my post on ST. Joseph's Church. Being in Florida, I will need to write to the campus and see how I can obtain these records since I'm no longer living in NJ. I would also like to thank Glenn Geisheimer (site Coordinator, Essex County) again for finding the additional information on my father Peter ZELEWITZ. The information from the Newark City Directory was my first lead on finding out where he was living in Newark. He has been very helpful to me and others on the list. Thank you Glenn for such a fine job on helping all of us who needed assistance and providing us with such a wonderful site to track down our Ancestors! Thanks to all, both on-line and off, who responded to my plea for information about the amount of time it takes to receive records. It appears the response time varies considerably with 5-6 weeks being the norm. I also learned I was not alone in having my request returned because I had written the date as 'circa 1925' even though I had included enough $ for a search of several years. I was told I must write the exact years, i.e. 1925, 1926, 1927, etc. I will continue to wait - what else can one do . . . .but I was encouraged that everyone eventually got their records. Thanks again for being there, Meredith Sorozan
Hello Estelle, FHC Vital Record Microfilm information can be found at: <http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~geishome/churches/denoms/rcatholic/josephsrc .htm#ARCHIVE> If the dates aren't what you are after I would then make an appointment with Seton Hall to look through their records or I would try to contact the nearest RC church that is still active. You could also try the Archdiocese to see if they know where the records are. <http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~geishome/churches/denomindex/rcatholic.htm> Good Luck, >I just received a copy of my uncles marriage Certificate (Joseph ZELEVITCH) >and the name of the officiator was Rev. Hi, For more information about vital records and where they are available in the state of New Jersey go to: http://www.cdc.gov/nchswww/howto/w2w/newjers.htm Hope this helps, Rita
<<<<Maybe it all depends of who opens your mail!>>>> I think so too. The very first time, I called, and they told me that they wouldn't issue a death certificate if it was for genealogy purposes. They also said they didn't have them before or after a certain date, like 1940. I went to the library in town and they had a large book that gave information on finding records and they had forms to copy from each state. Well, when I looked at the one for NJ, it had the option of using it for genealogy purposes and quite a few other options. I've sent off for quite a few certificates, some which they say they never found or were not in their records. Some I got quickly, others took quite a long time, but not as long as NY. On some, they sent my money back ( the ones I gave the option of two last names), saying that I could only do one last name, or pay for two searches. Needless to say, I spent more money on one ancestor, and they still haven't found her yet! Also, if the dead ancestor was not reported, there won't be a death certificate on her/him :( Susan Seifert mal316@ix.netcom.com
I also had them return my information. I had sent a "blank check" so they had the money! They sent back forms for me to fill out and I also have to send to the Archives section instead of Health and Senior Services! These just came back last week! They also want the name of the municipality in which the event occurred to search for any record prior to 1904. If they died in Newark and were buried in Newark (Woodland or Glendale) won't Newark be OK to use? Does anyone know the municipality? Maybe it all depends of who opens your mail! I sent a letter of request for a birth certificate and a marriage license, giving all the pertinent information. Because the marriage license would have required a search through two or more years, they returned by check with a notice that more money was required, even though there was more than enough to cover the birth certificate. They also sent the form which on which they required the information be submitted. I had to submit both of them over again. Glad you found them helpful. Perhaps I'll try again. --Lois (Vermont) Rhlnj@aol.com wrote: > > Hi, > > It usually takes about 8 weeks but they are very helpful. I sent for a birth > certificate from 1867. Hello List: I just received a copy of my uncles marriage Certificate (Joseph ZELEVITCH) and the name of the officiator was Rev. James F. Flanagan - St. Joseph's Church West Market Street, Newark. I could not find a listing at the Essex County churches site (under those that are active), but I did see the listing under the "Virtual Newark". I do not believe that any further information shows where I can obtain records on the this particular church. I hope I didn't over look it. Would anyone know who would keep these records?? Joseph ZELEVITCH married Anna SEDLAK on May 21, 1933. Parents of Bride: Peter SEDLAK and Mary PLASTONY (Variant could be PLACZONY) Parents of Groom: Frank ZELEVITCH Mary VASSELEWITZ (WACHWICZ) Any suggestions would be appreciated :) Estelle
