Hi Folks, I'm a new subscriber to the Essex County list. I'm tracking Isaac TOMKINS (my great grandfather) who was born in Livingston about 1836, and his father Isaac TOMKINS who was born around 1791. Found both on the 1850 census, along with Isaac Jr's brothers George and Albert; Isaac Jr. can be located on the 1860 and later censuses but I am less sure about George and Albert. Interested in any info on Livingston in the 1800's. Any suggestions? Love to touch base with anyone interested in TOMKINS in Essex County. Also CONDIT. (I have read the TOMPKINS-TOMKINS Genealogy by Robert Tompkins. Also the published CONDIT genealogy. Looking to move beyond) Beverly Fearn Porter, Columbia, Maryland

The cemetery my niece, Cynthia and I visited in 1998, was in the First Presbyterian Churchyard in Elizabeth. It is an inspiring place to visit, but needs a great deal of care. Many of our grandparents being buried there. Hatfields, Blanchards, etc. We spent a couple of hours just wondering about and taking pictures. We never felt threatened while there, however, we did keep an eye open for anything out of place. Joann Girard in Detroit

Hi ECRs: I just thought I'd let you know that I forwarded the comments regarding the dangerous conditions in both Holy Sepulchre and Fairmount Cemeteries to the woman who volunteered to photo graves in No. NJ & NY. Since I posted the Volunteer gravesite photography website to the list, I feel a responsibility for her knowing the dangers in those cemeteries and her safety. Since I haven't lived in NJ for over 30 years, I don't know much about specific cities and towns any longer except from what I read on this list. Regards, Pat Giovanni Sunnyvale, CA

I just had to add to the horror stories because it cannot be stressed enough that one must be extremely careful when visiting cemeteries in Newark (is it this bad in other cities?). We, too, had a horrible experience (in 1989) at Fairmount. We had just picked up our rental car at the airport and drove to the cemetery to visit the "BURSCH" plot. We filmed (video camera) for a few minutes, then locked the camera and my purse in the car, while we went for a 5 min walk. We came back to a vandalized car--purse and video camera stolen--it was that fast! Obviously we had been watched. Anyway, the security guard at Fairmount and Newark Police were not at all surprised; said that we were lucky we weren't killed! So sad... They settled in Newark, NJ. My father is Fred Piceno. The Jacob PLAGGE and Terresa TYLER name, also my grandparents came from New York, but settled in NJ.and Florida. My Aunt and I were in NJ in the Spring of 1998. We went to Fairmount Cemetery and were given an escort who stayed with us while we visited our family gravesites. He was very nice. Told us how dangerous it was to visit there and to always ask for assistance. Told us someone had been murdered there and to take no chances. We also went to the cemetery (can't for the life of me remember the name of it or the church..).where "Caldwell, the Fighting Pastor" is buried. It was a bit scarey there too, but we have SO much family there that we went about our business filming and taking pictures. I was a bit depressed at how ill taken care of the graveyard was. Very rundown...The tombs in back caving in....Isn't there any money for historical sites??
Thanks for confirming that Mike, I thought perhaps our experience was an isolated one. I hope everyone on the list is listening to this. Marie, Thing have actually gotten worse. A friend of my cousin was mugged there and his father was murdered at the cemetery. People (and I'm being polite calling them that) have broken into the mausoleums and have stolen jewelry from the caskets. If you go, go in the middle of the day and stop by the main office and they will provide an armed guard. My mother's family is buried there so I go about every six months. I haven't had a problem, but I'm not taking chances. Once my car's alternator died in the cemetery and I couldn't convince AAA to send someone out ("let me get this straight, your car died in a cemetery in East Orange and you want us to come out?!?") I ended up getting a jump from some of the cemetery workers who were coming back from a dig with their backhoe. It all seemed like a really bad episode from "Tales from the Crypt". I would be very careful going there. ----- Original Message ----- From: Marie Bartley Coppola <mcoppola@sprynet.com> To: <NJESSEX-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 19, 1999 4:52 PM Subject: Re: [NJESSEX] Cemetery Photography Website > Hi Meredith, > > My husband's parents are buried there (Holy Sepulchre). David Sachs is listed as father on the birth record of Helen Sachs in 1904 as 23 years old and a clerk. Helen was born in Newark NJ at the home of her grandparents, George and Elizabeth Riker Lovelace. Their daughter Elizabeth or Bessie was 17 at Helen's birth and listed as a house keeper. Bessie had studied opera in NY and according to her daughter was best friends with dancer Gilda McCoy. We don't know if David was from NY or NJ - have not found ANY indication of him except for Helen's birth certificate. Bessie married Arthur Joseph Mitchel in 1907 - what happened to David? Thanks Doris Mayer Reece
John and Sally Loveless are found in Forestburgh, Sullivan County, NY in the 1850 and 1860 census. John and Sally are buried in Westtown Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Their son, George, and his sister Mary are buried in Fairmount Cemetery in Newark NJ. Charles brother married a Lybolt and Emily's sister married a Lybolt. Have not yet found the connection of William W Hartwell to John and Sally Drake Lovelace but he is listed in George's bible with George's siblings.. Hannah Lovelace married William Hull, Rebecca married Ralph Steinard, and Harriett married Harry Barton. I have no spouses for Alfred Burns Lovelace, Henry, Ira, John, Charles or Mary (who's death certificate says she was single) Have found Sarah Drake as daughter of Zephaniah and Rebecca Shons DRake in a couple of books and in Ira Drake's bible.. Anybody see any connections to this family? Would love any suggestions on finding John's parents. Thanks Doris Mayer Reece
Hi Jane, Glen Ridge is a small residential town. It is long and narrow, most of it's streets run off of Ridgewood Avenue. They have a Public Library located directly across from the Glen Ridge Middle School, 235 Ridgewood Avenue, on the corner of Bloomfield Avenue. The library's telephone number is (973) 748-5482. I know they have a historical society and I believe they are at the Library once a week. I'm not sure which day, but I can call tomorrow and find out for you. I think you will love the town, it's lovely. It's the only town in the area sporting gaslights on every street corner. The local newspaper is the Independent Press, 266 Liberty Street, Bloomfield. I hope this helps. Hi Meredith, My husband's parents are buried there (Holy Sepulchre). The cemetery is located on Central Avenue in East Orange. We stopped going out of fear. There were packs of wild dogs running around and people have been mugged with frequency. We would always stop at the gate and ask for someone to accompany us. We have not been there in 5 years, I don't know if things have changed. This is just a warning for those attempting to go. I will be visiting Glen Ridge, NJ on October 5 1999 with my mother. Her grandmother's family, WILLIAM T. SPENCER, lived in Glen Ridge from its early development. William died in 1937; I have a record of his death certificate and I know his address so that we can look at the house that this part of our family lived in (or still does). Any suggestions on where we should start? Is there an historic society in Glen Ridge? Or a library that might have some information on the family? THANKS!! - Jane Dixon Anderson ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Good morning, I am writing from Rhode Island in the hope that someone is available to take some gravestone photographs at the Cemetery of the Holy Sepulchre in East Orange. I am willing to reimburse for all expenses. Thank you for considering my request. Best regards, Meredith Sorozan
