    2. Carol C-H
    3. Would anyone have access to the Montclair city director(ies?) for 1900-1910? I am desperately looking for Henry W. A. and Jeanne PAGE, who lived on Valley Road when their third (and last) child was b. in 1904. I understand that by 1916 there were no residences on Valley Road, but that is the address on the birth certificate, and that is what family history says - Any assistance would be much appreciated!! 1. [NJESSEX] Milburn Surname: LEBER
    2. For Lynne K. Ranieri: Hiya Lynne, I just read an e-mail posted about a Directory lookup in South Orange and saw you mentioned the Millburn-Short Hills Histroical Society. Perhaps you can help me also. My Great Grandfather, John LEBER, was from Millburn in 1860. After 30 years of searching I found a marriage record for him and my Great Grandmother, Sarah Ann DUNHAM. They were married in Newark, NJ and she was from Westfield. I did some research in Westfield and came up with bushels and bushels of ancestors, graves and family history to back before the Mayflower. I have not however done anything on John LEBER. I know that just after their wedding they lived in Millburn as the 1860 census indicates he was a harness maker and the census is in fact rather odd. Since the information recorded was suppose to be as of a certain date, and they were not married yet, and the data was taken after their marriage, she is listed as living with him, but unmarried. (I have the marriage record and dates so I know that is not true, at least for that time. LOL). I would appreciate any help in that direction. TIA Dave from Long Island

    1. [NJESSEX] Westfield grant of NH land
    2. It sounds like a settlement for an old Mason propietor right when Westfield residents got NH land. It is complicated but Captain John Mason and others received a huge grant in NH in 1622. He abandoned it in 1633 and left unpaid bills and people living there who had not been paid wages. The latter when they claimed it got land for their wage settlements from the widow Mason. Francis Drake left NH and transferred such land on Auguts 5, 1665. He settled in Piscataway, NJ. The NH land was not recorded sold until 1712. I would guess that when nearby Westfield folk heard of the recogition of the right of Francis Drake that they(descendents) sued NH in a class action suit for similiar past deprivation of land rights. 1. [NJESSEX] NJ founders of a NH town?
    2. I found the following article in the Vermont Historical Gazetteer, vol. 4, part 2, pp. 883-884. Many of the names of the original patentees of the town of Worcester, NH (now VT) in 1763 are found in the history of Westfield, NJ, and the surrounding area. Does anyone have an idea of why there would have been a grant of land to residents of NJ to found a town in NH, and what might have transpired to prevent the settling of the town until about 1803? Wilson DeCamp Vienna, VA WORCESTER. BY CHARLES C. ABBOTT. This town in the N. W. of Washington Co., lat. 44 24', long. 4 25', is bounded N. and W. by Elmore and Stowe, in Lamoille Co., S. by Middlesex, and E. by Calais. Who were the first white men that visited the town is unknown. The French and Indians passing from Canada to the older settlements on the Connecticut river, are said to have had their trail through this town, but have left no record of their names or of the place where. The town, with its present name and limits, was chartered June 8, 1763, by Gov. Wentworth of N. H., to grantees: Joshua Mason, Thomas Burgee, Robert Burgee, John Davidson, Robert Davidson, Samuel Halstead, Joshua Halstead, Wm. Davidson, Benjamin Betts, Samuel Betts, Abraham Betts, Ichabod Betts, John Betts, Grant Striker, Henry Dickinson, Anthony Baker, Joshua Hutchins, Samuel Dodge, Job Bacon, Wm. Gibbons, Wm. Pusey, James Gibbons, Wm. Mitchel, Charles Wiggins, John Hofnall, John Cockle, Henry Franklin, Hon. James Nevin, Nathaniel Barrell, Esq., Joseph Newmarsh, Esq., Col. Samuel Barr, and Maj. Joseph Blanchard. The charter was for 6 miles square, to be divided into 69 rights, or lots of 4 divisions each. The 1st division 1 acre, the 2d div. 3 acres, the 3d div. 38 acres, the 4th 7 acres. The 1 acre lots were laid out in the center of the town and are comprised in the farm now owned b Wm. H. Kellogg; the 7 acre lots, around this one, mostly on the west; the 38 acre lots on the west side of the town, adjoining Stowe. The Governor's right in the S. W. corner, and the 300 acre lots comprised the rest of the town. There is now no record of any meeting of the original grantees to be found, nor any conveyances from them; and there was much litigation in regard to land titles in the early history of the town. Much of the land is now held under titles from "tax collectors," having been sold for taxes.

    3. Hello ECRs, For those of you who saw yesterday's Newark Edition of the Star-Ledger, there were a few inaccuracies in the article on myself and Virtual Newark. Also, one of my co-workers said that the picture of me, made me look like the Gatekeeper to Hades. On another note, anyone that wishes to visit one of the Newark Cemeteries should read the information printed by Fairmount Cemetery on the following page (middle of page): <http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~geishome/cemeteries/fairmount.htm> One last hint. When purchasing a book, I have found that the best copies are originals that are found at used book stores. Newer, reprinted, books usually have pictures that look like photocopies.
