    1. [NJESSEX] SMITH/FORCE
    2. Hello List, I would like to corresponde with anyone who has or is researching this family line. Hannah SMITH was born Mar. 27, 1764 and died Feb. 24, 1838. Is buried at the Baptist Church in Northfield, NJ. About 1780-82, she married Thomas FORCE whose name is spelled FORSE on his tombstone in the same cemetery. He was born Dec. 21, 1758, in Woodbridge, NJ and died Mar. 30, 1827, a son of Samuel FORCE and his second wife, Sarah FREEMAN. Samuel was a great-grandson of the pioneer, Matthew FORCE, a French Huguenot who was in Gravesen, LI in 1660 and his wife Elizabeth PALMER, through Benjamin and Elizabeth____, Thomas and Mary SPENCER. Hannah and Thomas had 10 children. I am more interested in Hannah and Thomas's history and their birthplaces and burial places and their children. My information comes from the publication, "Peter Smith of Jamaica, Long Island and some of his descendants" Contributed by Samuel Stelle Smith. 1954 Thank You Jean Hehn Colorado http://pages.prodigy.net/jhubb22/page39.htm

    1. [NJESSEX] Woodbridge
    2. Glenn G. Geisheimer
    3. Hello ECRs, It seems the question about Woodbridge being in Essex County has a little bit more to it than I previously knew. There is some conflict about dates and boundaries that would support the possibility of Woodbridge being in Essex County. Given these conflicts, Woodbridge may have been part of Essex County between the years 1675 - 1683. The conflicts hinge on whether Essex County was formed from the Province of East Jersey in 1675 or 1682. Some books say 1675 and others say 1682. The boundary conflict has to do with the border of Essex (Union) County being between Woodbridge and Rahway. Any other thoughts? Thanks, -------- Glenn G. 3. Woodbridge used to be a part of the larger area Elizabethtown, and was part of Essex Co before Middlesex Co was formed. Rahway is just north of Woodbridge and south of the present Elizabeth. I have seen wills identifying a person as living in "Rahway Ward, Elizabethtown, Essex Co." There is an old cemetery in Rahway dating from 1727. There is also an old cemetery at the First Presbyterian Church of Woodbridge. 3. Hello Laura, Woodbridge was never in Essex County, it has always been in Middlesex County EXCEPT prior to 1683 when there was no Essex or Middlesex Counties, only The Province of East Jersey, which both present day counties were a part of. Elizabeth Borough is the same as Elizabethtown, which is the same as Elizabeth. That present day city was in Essex County until 1857 when Union County was formed from Essex County. Rahway is in Union County (see time period above). It is the next town north of Woodbridge Township (which, of course is in Middlesex County) >I have 3 more listings in my Hatfield line for Woodbridge of Essex Co. 1. [NJESSEX] Newark City Directory
    2. Elise Brenner
    3. Hi, I was wondering if anybody can do a lookup for me in the Newark NJ directories after 1908. Someone did a look up for 1910 and 1911 and didn't find my great grandfather, Francis McNicholas but at this point I am really stuck. He moved from Troy NY, he had worked in the iron works up there. There is no soundex for the 1910 census and he isn't listed on the 1920 census. I also checked NY for him since my grandparents were there in 1920 and he isn't listed with them either. I have also seen him listed as Frank and also with a last name of McNichols. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Elise http://www.cport.com/elise

    3. I have heard that Seton Hall has records, but how can we get info from them? Do we send our requests in to them? How much does it cost for their services? Or do we have to go there and look up the records ourselves? What kinds of records do they have? I hope this isn't too many questions! 1. [NJESSEX] Seton Hall
    2. If you are looking for information from Seton Hall you will have a long wait. They have so many requests for information and are short staffed. If you want to go there to do your own lookup you have to make an appointment. The last I heard they were booked six months in advance. The NJ State Archives have birth records starting from 1848-1878. Their address is: Archives Section, Division of Archives and Records Management Department of State CN307 Trenton, NJ 086625-03007 The cost is four dollars. I wrote for information about my husband's grandfather and they sent me one page with names of some of his siblings as well. It took about two months. Good luck, Rita

It would have been in walking distance of St. Michael's Parish. They evidently had kindergarten or the equivalent of preschool. Thank you, Rita >> Rita, Newark Normal School was on Broadway, across from and down the block from St Michael's Church. Two of my aunts attended there and became teachers. Sometime before 1936, the school became Newark State Teachers' College. My brother and his wife-to-be went there. sometime after World War II, the school moved to Union, NJ and became Newark State College at Union, then Kean College, where three of my children got their degrees. Today it is Kean University. I assume you would have to contact Kean U for for records. I don't think it was ever an elementary school. But it's possible that was an arrangement to provide practice teaching facilities for the teacher interns. I will check with my cousin, class of about 1930. Joe Cummins

    1. [NJESSEX] Roman Catholic Church Records
    2. Hi Estelle, The church records you are asking about can be obtained where the event (birth, marriage, burial) occurred. If you know the date when any event occurred, it would help in locating the records. If the church has its own cemetery, and you know the date of burial, you can find out from it the approximate date of death. After you have the DOD, you can write to the bureau of Vital Statistics in Trenton and they can provide you with a copy of the death certificate for a small fee. Another source of the same records is Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ The archives division is 973-761-9476. Seton Hall is a Catholic University which is the depository for church records for ESSEX County. Do not expect a quick answer from Seton Hall as they are swamped with requests for searches of records. I am waiting for a reply from Seton Hall which I made about 6 weeks ago. Good Luck. IT WAS BUILT PROBABLY IN THE 1800'S AND STILL EXISTS TODAY. I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU WOULD OBTAIN RECORDS ON FORMER PRISONERS BUT YOU COULD CALL THE WARDENS OFFICE AND I AM SURE THEY WOULD TELL YOU HOW TO GO ABOUT IT. BOB SCHOTT - LAKELAND, FL.

    1. [NJESSEX] St. Stanilaus Church Nwark NJ
    2. Hello again: Lots of question today:) I located the church in which my parents attended in Newark when they first arrived in Newark via Ellis Island. The Father of the church asked for me to write down all the names of the family members and dates and he would be able to send me what he has. I am not familiar with Roman Catholic Church records, could someone advise me on what to ask for specifically. I would like to have everything he has on the family and I would not want to miss out on any goodies that the church has on the family. The more the merrier :) He did tell me that he has the town of Galicia (Austria Poland). I was wondering if gparents would have advised the church on any information on my aunt and uncle who were born there. Where born when christened etc. Would that be of the interest of the church to have the background of all family members attending this church? Thanks again Estelle Boca Raton FL
