    1. [NJESSEX] Edwards of Essex, NJ
    2. Richard E. Hills, Sr.
    3. Greetings, My ancestors are Edwards. I've traced them back to Ira Edwards, born in NJ in 1803 and died in Onondaga County, NY in about 1863. He was married to Phoebe Gildersleeve born about the same time and she died in Michigan in 1868. Phoebe could have been from Essex as well. We have a 1920s handwritten family tree that places Ira's father as John, John's father as John and it leads back to Essex, NJ. But we've not been able to establish Ira's place or birth, nor really identify his parents. Anybody out there familiar with the Edwards and Gildersleeve clans of NJ, particularly of the Essex area? Thanks, Dick ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dick Hills' rhills@westol.com

I found several potential connections and a surprising governor of Mass. with the exact same name as my grandfather, Edward Jarvis King. I think there may be a connection in there somewhere and will try to follow up. Happy Familying Laura Irby in VA

    2. You think that's bad? A few days ago I downloaded a family query form....or should I say forms. It was 4 pages double columned, smaller than newspaper print with 10 categories: Yourself, Family, Grandparents, Childhood, School, Transportation & Surroundings, Traditions, Higher Education & Career, Marriage & Later Life, Philosophy & Outlook. Asking such things as: What type of house did you livein as a child? What is your most enjoyable memory of time spent with your family? How was your house heated? What family traits run in your family? Where did your family go on vacation? And........not a word about genetic or medical problems. One can really get carried away! Your parents info: maiden names, birth/death days, sibling/parents. 4. Military, clubs, groups, occupation. 5. Hobbies, games, sports, travels 6. Favorite food, recipes 7. Where you met your spouse 8. Childhood memories 9. Faith 10. Hair color, the color of your eyes, height 11. Where you lived as a child. 12. Anything else you may think of, that you wish you knew about the ancestors you are searching.

    1. Re: [NJESSEX] Woodbridge?
    2. Judy, is there any cemetery occupant listings for these areas, online? Just a thought! Happy Familying Laura Irby in VA << Woodbridge used to be a part of the larger area Elizabethtown, and was part of Essex Co before Middlesex Co was formed. Rahway is just north of Woodbridge and south of the present Elizabeth. I have seen wills identifying a person as living in "Rahway Ward, Elizabethtown, Essex Co." There is an old cemetery in Rahway dating from 1727. There is also an old cemetery at the First Presbyterian Church of Woodbridge. Judy >>

    1. Re: [NJESSEX] Woodbridge
    2. It's no wonder that it is so difficult to find information about our ancestors. I have a MILLER ancestor in PA that is listed as having been born in three different places on 3 different documents. I guess they usually put down where the place was at the time of the document, though the place may have relocated politically several times since the occurrence. Happy Familying Laura Irby in VA << Hello ECRs, It seems the question about Woodbridge being in Essex County has a little bit more to it than I previously knew. There is some conflict about dates and boundaries that would support the possibility of Woodbridge being in Essex County. Given these conflicts, Woodbridge may have been part of Essex County between the years 1675 - 1683. The conflicts hinge on whether Essex County was formed from the Province of East Jersey in 1675 or 1682. Some books say 1675 and others say 1682. The boundary conflict has to do with the border of Essex (Union) County being between Woodbridge and Rahway. Any other thoughts? Thanks, >>
