Hello Researchers, Sometime within the next month I will be stopping by the Reformed Church in America Archives at Rutgers University in New Brunswick to speak with Russell L. Gasero, Archivist for the Reformed Church in America. If anyone has any questions about the church/archives (NOT personal surname queries) they would like me to ask him please forward them to me via my personal email address and NOT to the mailing list. Hello Judy and ECRs, I don't know about microfilm but the church records from 1801-1902 are in the possession of the N.J. Historical Society. In addition to that, you may want to contact: Brookdale Reformed Church 10 Bellevue Avenue Bloomfield, NJ 07003 ---and/or--- Russell L. Hello Rob and ECRs, If you're planning to go to NEWARK than the Newark Public Library and the NJ Historical Society are your best bets. The are relatively close to each other and you can walk between them. For information on both go to these URLs: <http://www.npl.org/> <http://www.rootsweb.com/~njessex/towns/newark/njhsgc.htm> If you're in the vicinity of New Brunswick then the Alexander Library at Rutgers has the information. <http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~geishome/ggg/miscdebr/miscrutg.htm> <http://scc01.rutgers.edu/alexhome/> >Planning a trip to NJ and want to research my family from Newark. Where I have sent for obit.s, I have paid between $2 & $5. I would definitely say that $15 is too much per obit. Is there anywhere else in Essex Co. that could do the lookup? Happy Familying Laura Irby in VA
Hello:- Planning a trip to NJ and want to research my family from Newark. Need to check City Directories, Census Info and Newspaper obits. Is the Newark Library the best place to go for this info???? Or is there somewhere else I can go that has the same info available. Thanks.... Rob
Can anyone let me know the name of a genealogist who I can pay to do obit lookups for Newark deaths? I contacted the Newark public library who will do lookups for $US15 each. This price seems a little steep to me, or is this a realistic price for this type of research? Thanks for any advice! Steve Way
The records of Stone House Plains Church is on LDS microfilm 1019522 for 1801-1828. Has anyone seen the records beyond 1828 on microfilm? Judy Ullman
Hi Folks, Thanks to everyone who answered. I tried to respond to each of you individually, but with the question being posted to five mailing lists, the response was simply too great. The general consensus seems to indicate that "Squire" was a given name for the Boone family, but can also be used as a title (i.e. Esquire). To those on the Nelson County, KY, mailing list - I'm up to page 267 on the book and still typing my fingers off re-creating the index. You have my promise I will never again attempt a data sort at 2:00 a.m.! John Cresseveur
It is probably both. The Squire family lived in the ELizabeth/Westfield area of NJ and I generally assume that all of the tombstones in Butler County (Ohio) with the first name of Squire are descendants of female members of the Squire family. Friends, Two questions I would appreciate any comments on. One set of my ancestors, TOMKINS, were long time residents of Livingston in Essex County. I believe a history of Livingston was published a number of years back, but I haven't been able to track it down further. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Another set of my ancestors, SWACKHAMMER, were part of the early palatinate Germans in New Jersey; they later moved to New York state. I am particularly interested in any reasons for this interstate migration. Thanks. Beverly Fearn Porter, Columbia, MD

Hello Listers, I am researching my great-grandparents Phillip McEntee and Catherine Tully. They were both born in Ireland and lived for many years in East Orange, New Jersey. My ggrandfather was born around 1872 and died in 1924. He is buried in Holy Selpulchre Cemetery. My ggrandmother is also buried there. Any help is appreciated. Annie
That was interesting. What was also interesting was all the other info at the site. I even located in the archives several other people connecting to my Essex Co., HATFIELDS. The Newark census was noted. Is there a site somewhere with the other Essex Co. census sites? In John Littell's First Settlers of Passaic Valley I found Henry Schureman, son of Thomas Schureman, Esq. had married Eliza Clark. Eliza was the daughter of Daniel and Sally Willcox Clark, granddaughter of Samuel and Jane Osborn Clark, and g-grandaughter of of John Clark who came from Long Island. Is there anybody out there with further information on this couple? Thankyou for your help. Lisa in Bremerton

Hello ECRs, I've added a new section to Virtual Newark, it's called "8th New Jersey Volunteers". The 8th New Jersey Volunteers were from the Civil War and the majority of them were mustered out of Newark. The new section consists of reprints of "THE CAMP MATTAWOMAN GAZETTE", a monthly newsletter that uncovers the history of the Eighth New Jersey Regiment. Currently there are only newsletters from July & August but I'll have the first 6 on line and then they will appear month by month as they are published by Gilbert V. Riddle. Please do not email Mr. Riddle with surname query requests, his time restraints on researching & publishing these newsletters only allow him to reply to ones that inquire about the unit as a whole. Also, Mr. Riddle lives in NC and has been affected by the recent storms, so he is unavailable to answer any questions about the unit for about the next month or so. Please direct any questions to me. "THE CAMP MATTAWOMAN GAZETTE" offers an insight into the unit and it's members including sections dealing with how the soldiers died (individual names) and the army hospital in Newark. Please be aware that the on line search capabilities of Virtual Newark (Search this Site) have a lag time of approx. 10 days from the time that I put a web page on line until it shows up in the keyword search. So as I put the new editions on line (or any other new page for that matter), they won't appear in the search engine for 10 days. Thank You, --------- Glenn G. Geisheimer, Iselin, New Jersey: germanic42@home.com If I've been able to point you in a direction, please email me with your results so that I may help other researchers. Hi Folks, I'm working on an index for a book containing genealogical material (1780's to 1940's). Numerous entries contain information on names such as "Squire" Boone or "Squire" C. Crume. Is "Squire" a given name or a title such as Judge, Honorable, Etc? Thanks, John Cresseveur
Rootsweb has a new site, I'm sure it has Essex Co. people on it, somewhere.
