    1. [NJESSEX] 1900 census
    2. Fred & Judy Brauns
    3. Looking for SKS to locate my Farrell family in the 1900 census. Father was Lawrence Farrell, age about 36 and his wife Sarah about 34. In 1910 they were on Hecker St. They had 3 daughters that I know of -- Florence, Lucille and Rose who was not born until 1907. They had 5 other children who supposedly died young and these are the children I am looking for. Any help would be appreciated. Judy in NC

The entry is Farrell, Lawrence Vol. 17, E.D. 58, Sheet 9, Line 62 White, b. Nov 1866 age 33, born NJ Essex County, address: 73 So 6th, Newark Farrell, Sarah Wife b. Oct1868 age 31 b. This week's presentation will be given by Janet T. Riemer, a preservation archivist and genealogist, on the subject "Preserving Your Family Documents." The session will provide practical information about caring for and storing family documents and photographs. Her advice should be useful for anyone who is the keeper of heirloom family papers or photo albums. The lecture will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Manuscript Reading Room at the State Archives, 225 West State St. - 2nd Floor, Trenton, NJ 08625-0307. Also, a reminder that the Archives' Microfilm Reading Room will have extended public hours to 6:00 p.m. that evening. Free public parking is available in the State House Garage until 5:00 p.m. and behind the State Archives Building, 225 West State Street, after 3:30 p.m. Registration for the "Exploring Your Jersey Roots" series is $8 per lecture. 1. RE: [NJESSEX] Essex Co. Deeds & Property Records
    2. Wilson Brown
    3. The only warning is that Essex Deed Book A (to 1790) was at some point destroyed. Sometimes mortgages discharges contain much of the information that was in the original deed. The other problem, particularly for those interested in the western part of Essex, is that many early deeds are clouded because those who settled in the "Horseneck" never had clear right to the land, having failed to purchase them from the Proprietors of East Jersey. Again, later deeds may help clarify if the land was in the family. WB

    3. Nancy, Essex County deeds from the 1780s through 1860s will also be found on microfilm at the NJ State Archives in Trenton. They should also be available through the LDS Family History Centers. 2. Betty from Louisiana: You are very smart to allocate several days for your ancestor research in NJ. I have researched my early Newark, NJ ancestors in all three of the places you mentioned, and have found value in each. The Historical Society in Newark is the hardest to access, but don't pass it up! I found wonderful information there including originals of family wills and other papers! Find out ahead of time when that facility is open. Its research library is not open every day. Lucy Russell Researching in Essex Co. NJ Browne, Burwell, Crane, Hedden, Huntington, Roberts, Sargent

    1. [NJESSEX] November trip to NJ
    2. Betty Clingman
    3. Hi List, I'm counting on you for your much needed input. We'll be driving to Virginia the first weekend in Nov. for Parents' Weekend at Washington & Lee Univ. and we (actually I) have decided we should drive up to New Jersey since we'll already be 3/4 of the way there. This will be my first, and possibly only, chance to do some research in NJ and I'll have only 3 or 4 days in which to do it. So I have make a plan of action before I get up there. My interests lie in Somerset and Essex Counties. I realize that, at the time my ancestors lived there, these counties encompassed a much larger area than they do now. These are my primary objectives: 1. Find information on the MORRISON family, three generations of whom were in Somerset County by 1750 (Do not know when they arrived in NJ) Thomas MORRISON > John MORRISON, m. Margrete > Capt. Isaac MORRISON, b. 1745 in Somerset Co. (probably Bernards Twp.), m. Phebe Ward LAMSON, daughter of Daniel LAMSON/LAMPSON, b. 1696 in Newark, Essex Co., and Eunice WARD. Hopefully, my search will include looking at Somerset Co. property records and the Jacob JANEWAY account ledgers. 2. Find information on the LAMSON/LAMPSON family and related families of early Essex Co. The Calendar of NJ Wills 1670-1760 lists Daniel's estate (Essex Co., Lib. F, p. 405, 4 Nov 1756), but it only gives the name of his wife, Unice (sic) who served as administrix. The children were minors so I think there should be other court records. 3. Find old maps of Essex Co. so I can get straight in my mind the proximity of such places as Newark, Elizabethtown, Orange and Newark Mountain because I'm really confused. I keep finding the same person living in all these different places at approximately the same time. Were the town names used almost synonymously at one time (pre Rev. War)? My time line in NJ is approximately 1666-1805. Surnames that I know of so far are MORRISON, LAMSON/LAMPSON, WARD, SWAINE, and HARRISON Now here's where I really need your help. Given the limited time and the type of information I am hoping to find, where would that time be best spent? The NJ Archives in Trenton; The library at Rutgers University in New Brunswick; New Jersey Historical Society in Newark; a combination of these place, or elsewhere? I am open to any and all suggestions if there are other places I should consider and any other kind of advice. Thanks so much. Betty Louisiana

    3. ** PRIVATE ** Caldwell was and is a town in the northwest corner of Essex County. It was named for James Caldwell, a Presbyterian preacher and patriot during the Revolutionary war. The old town was considerably larger (in territory) than the modern one, including the present towns of Caldwell, North Caldwell, West Caldwell, Fairfield, and, I think, Essex Fells. I am not a specialist in the Wright family, but it is an old family in the area with a presence in Livingston (near Caldwell). WB
