I have registered there for their email list, how is that different than this one? I also joined in the forum, do you have a weekly discussion? I didn't see much activity. My ancestors (mother, grandparents, etc) were born and grew up there. My origons started in Sasbach, Baden, Germany, and surounding towns. I know more about those ancestors than I do my American ancestors. I enjoyed going through all the old photo's and reading all the memories. I was not born there, and can only remember some of those places from my childhood. I know that we took the train to Newark, and shopped at Bamberger's, and always ate at the Woolworth's, I can't remember what you would call it, I want to say soda fountain. My ancestors are buried in Woodland and some are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery. My parents always used the term "down neck" when they were reminiscing I always wondered what that meant.. Linda

Hi Mona, Here is the info from my friend. Ilsa Ilsa, There are aboout 25 different funeral homes in Newark, N.J. but no Brierley. I have found the State Dept. of Health, Bureau of Vital Stats., CN 360, Trenton, N.J. 08625. Also found STATE BOARD: Contact - Maurice W. McQuade, Exec. Director, 1100 Raymond Blvd., Room 513, Newark. N.J. 07102. Perhaps the Essex Funeral Service at 253 Mt. Prospect Avenue, Newark, New Jersey 07104 could help as they appear to be the biggest in the area and would know where to direct your friend. My book is from 1989 so it is quite old. Hope some of this helps
Please note: the current area code for Newark is now (973) and not (201). Hi Mona, Did you mean Bernauer originally...I thought you wanted Brierley. There is a listing for A. L. Bernauer & Son 133 Niagra Street 07103 344-1508 no area code listed...this is in 1994. There is also: Brickus F/H 183 Littleton Ave 07103 and Buyus F/H 426 Lafayette 07105, all in Newark. I also have 1998 funeral home book and those three are also listed in it. I have a friend who has an old funeral book that sometimes tells where old records are located. I will e-mail her and see if she can come up with something. In the meantime, would the Newark not Museum, but where the Genealogical Group meets, they just moved couple years ago to, I think Lincoln Park or the old Hotel Rbt Treat, can't think of it. Ilsa
Maybe you could call one of these: Newark Bernauer Funeral Home 133 Niagara St (201) 344-1508 Buyus Funeral Home 426 Lafayette St (201) 344-5172 Cotton Funeral Service 130 Lyons Ave (201) 926-6400 Drew Funeral Home 605 Sanford Ave (201) 373-0733 Funeraria Las Americas 279 Roseville Ave (201) 483-4255 Galante Funeral Home 17 Pacific St (201) 589-4998 J E Churchman Jr Funeral Home 345 13th Ave (201) 242-8454 Mc Donough's Funeral Home 637 Broadway (201) 485-3138 Perry's Funeral Home 34 Mercer St (201) 824-9201 Rucki Funeral Home 426 Lafayette St (201) 344-7023 Santiago Funeral Home 255 Lafayette St (201) 344-6744 Spatola Funeral Home 240 Mount Prospect Ave (201) 482-2744 Whigham Funeral Home 580 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd (201) 622-6872 [email protected] wrote: If the Brierley Funeral Home is still in operation in Newark, NJ, can someone send me the address and phone # for it? My husband is from Irvington, next town, and since 50s I have never heard of Brierley, but I could be wrong. My thought was where are the records also...I'm sorry I can't help, I live in FL. Ilsa
I have a 1994 Funeral Directors Yellow Book and there is no Brierley Funeral Home listed for Newark.
If the Brierley Funeral Home is still in operation in Newark, NJ, can someone send me the address and phone # for it? Thanks. Mona
Friends,Cousins,Fellow searchers With the upcoming holidays approaching fast and furious, I pause to take stock of all the fun that we find with the sharing of our personal search finds that really demonstrate that yup yup yup, we ARE one big family. No matter what our "belief" through the glory of searching and sharing we really find that inner peace of family. May in the new year that elusive piece of paper be found, that faded photo get identified, the ship of your clan, family, tribe be found. May the neat story tha says "This is who we are" get posted for all to enjoy. While on the lists, I have made some neat discoveries, shared things I found, met some "lost" cousins that I hope to meet some day soon, and while not all the info deals directly with my tree, Ireally enjoy the happiness that others expeirence in the finding of a family member. Man oh man it is neat to "feel" through the words expressed when that find is shared. So....my holiday wish is that you find that connection, may your secret santa get you that extra gift you wished for, may all your data have documentation, and your pictures have a cool story. Also for all of our families that have had some one "called home" our thoughts are with you this season. May your "spirit guide", no matter who you follow, bless you and yours. Hi everyone, Does anyone have access to any early Newark/Orange area newspapers for the early 1900's? I'm looking for a wedding announcement for my gr-grandfather. His name is Stephen Van Brunt and he married Anna Ward on April 27, 1904 in East Orange at Arlington Ave Presbyterian Church (He was a police officer in E. Orange). I'm really looking for any references to their parents/siblings etc. but will take anything I can get. Thanks for any help! Cheryl
That's a shame Marshall, we all love NJ stuff. Sounds like you were just mistaken with a buyer that was a problem in the past. Check the ratings if there aren't too many and see if you can locate the similarity, or maybe he remembered you wrong. Keep trying ;o) I just want to pass this on if it matters to anyone who may bid on genealogy items on eBay. "sevenchildren" places NJ-related auctions occasionally. Recently I attempted to bid on an item placed on eBay by the seller named "sevenchildren". My bid was refused by the seller. I tried several times and each time my bid was rejected. I emailed the seller multiple times asking why and never received a response. I've completed at least one transaction in the past with this seller successfully, and no unsuccessful transactions. I'm currently attempting to file a report with eBay but it appears that eBay has no avenue of applying feedback for the seller nor reporting the seller in this instance. I suppose it's within the seller's right to block anyone's bid. But, I feel it's wrong to ignore my emails asking why. -- Marshall Lake -- [email protected] -- http://mlake.net ==== NJESSEX Mailing List ==== Contact the List administrator: ============================== To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Hi:-0 For those researching Bonnell, see the Star Ledger obit for Dec 5.... http://www.nj.com/obituaries/ledger/
Many descendants of NJ founders have ancestors who were interred in the Old Burying Ground at the First Presbyterian Church at Newark. In 1888 this cemetery was deconsecrated and the remains of settlers who had been buried within the period ca1666-1808 were placed in a common grave at the Fairmount Cemetery. A large statue of a Puritan man was erected over the crypt and historical information engraved on the monument. The monument has been in disrepair, but the Newark Preservation & Landmarks Committee recently restored it as described in a local paper, the Newark Star Ledger. <http://www.nj.com/living/ledger/index.ssf?/base/living-2/10705213993593 0.xml> http://www.nj.com/living/ledger/index.ssf?/base/living-2/107052139935930 .xml According to the Ledger article there are intentions of organizing a dedication of the restored monument in the spring of 2004 that would include descendants of the settlers. An accurate list of the Newark founders can be seen on Joann Rabun's Gene Pool website: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~genepool/newark2.htm> http://www.rootsweb.com/~genepool/newark2.htm I don't know who would be organizing this- according to the article the monument is owned by the city, but the restoration was done by the NP&LC, so they may be doing the dedication program too. I also have no idea how they are going to identify and locate descendants- probably the organizers will rely upon descendants to identify themselves. There are several organizations that might be particularly interested in this event. Last year a Newark Historical Society was created and the NJ Historical Society has its office in the city. The Newark City Historian mentioned in the article, Charles Cummings, works at the Newark Public Library. Most of the towns in Essex County (and surrounding counties) have historical societies. Although there is no county-wide historical society, there is an alliance of historical societies in the western end of Essex County, the League of Historical Societies of West Essex. One of these societies, Horse Neck Founders History and Genealogy Society supports research and preservation of genealogy and NJ history, particularly in the old Horse Neck Track, which was sometimes known as the Third Newark Purchase. Horse Neck Founders would be willing to start compiling email and correspondence with the names and addresses of descendants of the Newark founders who are interested in this event, make sure that this information is passed along to the Newark Preservation & Landmarks Committee (or whoever is in charge of the dedication) and encourage them to provide information to descendants who are interested in this project. Regards- Bev Crifasi, President, Horse Neck Founders, PO Box 122, Caldwell, NJ 07006

I am trying to locate what became of James King Jr., who married Sarah Current in Sussex Co., NJ June 24, 1798. I have nothing about them or their descendants after this date, except to know that Sarah was still living in 1839 when her father died in Canada, as she was mentioned in his will. Any information at all would be greatly appreciated. thank you- Marilyn Current
