    3. I am trying to locate a death record for Casimir (Kasimiers) Ostrowsky (Ostroski, Ostrowski, Ostrosky), who lived in Essex County, after his immigration from Poland in the early 1900's. The city directories show Casimir residing in Newark until 1932, when he "removed to Passaic." I am unsure whether this means back to Passaic Avenue in Newark, or to Passaic County. After 1932 there is no record of Casimir in the city directories for either county. In 1950, Casimir's wife is shown as a widow in the city directory. I have a copy of a memorial placque dated October 1946 in Casimir's memory. I have had a search made for death records for Casimir from 1940 - 1948 without success. He was a member of St. Casimir's church in Newark, where his children were born. He is not buried with his wife, or a son, who died in 1947. Casimir was estranged from his family, but I really don't think he was very far away. He was not naturalized. His occupation was that of a laborer. I believe he died in Essex County or Passaic, but am running out of ideas as to how to find a death date or burial place. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Patrice Houck Schadt

    3. Patrice, Passaic in this case probably means the city of Passaic, located in Passaic County. I recall a recent discussion on the Passaic County list about city directories for the city of Passaic, so I know they do exist. Have you tried checking directories from the 1930s for the city of Passaic? Did he have any other relatives in the US? If so, he may have been buried in one of their cemetery plots. In my family, distant relatives seem to have been put in graves simply because there was a need and room to spare in a plot. The city of Passaic had a large Polish population in the early 1900s. Maybe you could try one of the Polish churches there. I'm not familiar with Passaic City (my ancestors lived in Paterson and Newark), but I did find two Polish churches in Passaic still in existence: St. Joseph's (started 1892) at 7 Parker Ave, Passaic, NJ 07055 (phone 973-473-0921 Holy Rosary (started 1918) at 6 Wall St, Passaic, NJ 07055 (phone 983-473-1578). I wish you luck in your search! 2. For MonaMusic & the list: Mary Lish has been compiling a tremendous amount of data for the Woodland Cemetery - as she collects this data she is also finding helpful hints and notes from those of us who have relatives buried in Woodland. Mary's address is [email protected] I've written to Haeberle & Barth Funeral Home (1100 Pine Ave., Union, N.J. 07083-3936)and they have provided me (on multiple occasions) the names and addresses of where to locate older funeral home records. Mary also has access to these same records. You need to know that New Jersey does not have any rules or regulations about the disposition of funeral home records once the funeral home closes. Sadly, these records sometimes go in the trash. You might also try the 'virtual newark' site that Glenn has establised for Funeral Homes, too. Happy Hunting, hope this helps someone, Jack -- [email protected] wrote: Please note: the current area code for Newark is now (973) and not (201).
