I just returned from Salt Lake City were I was doing some research on Patrick Regan (Ragan), married to Catharine Lee Regan (Ragan), living in Essex County, New Jersey. I found that Patrick died sometime between the 1850 and 1860 Census. I located the 1855 New Jersey State Census but could not find Essex County. Was the census not taken in Essex, was it lost, or has it just not been microfilmed? If the Census is available, how can I go about finding if Patrick and Catharine Regan (Ragan) are listed? Thank you for your time, Jeanette Lawson Elk Grove, CA
Limited amount of names however, and I have been trying to go thru and correct the spellings (if needed) of the Matawan names I know. - the names and dates posted are more recent ones- I am not the person doing the site however! linda Old Tennent Cemetery Burials or http://www.rootsweb.com/~njmh/oldtennent/otmain.htm main site
Looking for information on the Stucko Family that lived in Irvington, New Jersey in the mid fiftys. Mother, Father, and two daughters, believe the daughters were Tina and Lorraine.

To Janice in Canada: I had a quick look on Heritage Quest, available on my home computer through my public library. In the 1900 Census index, there were 12 Gravenhorst heads of households: one in Iowa, 2 in Illinois, 2 in Kansas, one in New Jersey (Gustave in Newark), and 6 in New York (Anna M., Carl H., Frederick, George, Jacob, and Wm. B). Looked at George. He was in Kings Co., 20th Ward, Brooklyn, at 304 Carleton Avenue. T623, roll 1057, ED 314, p. 2A. George was b. Jan. 1843 in Germany, was age 57, married 30 years, immigrated to U.S. in 1864, had been in U.S. for 36 years, was naturalized, occupation merchant. He was enumerated with his wife Katharine, also b. Germany, daughter Elsa and Sons Fred and Carl, all three b. NY. I also checked Heritage Quest for Gravenhorsts in 1870. There were none. That doesn't mean they weren't there; the enumerator may have misspelled the name. Hope this helps. Ann in Maryland

What a marvelous group on this list! Thank you all SO MUCH for your help and suggestions. Our connection is Marie Gravenhorst Ernst (~1849-1897). Her sister, Helene (~1842- after 1897) married late in life, Bernard F. Nutzhorn. Henry M. Nutzhorn, a lawyer, & Helene Nutzhorn are executors of Marie's will, filed and proved in Essex County, NJ. Marie was living in Upper Montclair, NJ after the death of her husband. In her will, Marie G. Ernst leaves money to the Wartburg Orphansfarm School of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the State of NY, located at or near Mount Vernon, Westchester Co, NY. I just learned that a George Gravenhorst was on the board at this farm school from 1877-1923. His son Paul also served on the board from 1923-1951. Paul was president of the board from 1941-1957. I am trying to identify Marie's connection to these Gravenhorst's. I know of two younger brothers of Marie and Helene who came to the USA from Germany. Joseph and Julius are said to have come in 1865/6. Both married in IL and stayed in the west. Could be George (from 1910 census, age 57- born Jan. 1843 in Germany- came to the US in 1864- mechanic) was a brother born between Helene and Marie and was the first to come to the USA. Delighted to learn he had a son Paul born 1883! Thanks again. Janice in Canada
Janice, Do you have ages for any of the Gravenhorst? There are quite a few in N.J.alone.Haven't yet checked NJ or CT. Here is one I found with both a Paul and a George. 1910 George Gravenhorst- age 57- born Jan. 1843 in Germany- came to the US in 1864- mechanic Katherine- wife- age 54-born Mar. 1846 in Germany- came to the US in 1848 Elsa K.- daughter- age 24- born Feb. 1876 in NY Fred W, son- age 22- born Feb. 1877 Paul G.- son - age 17- born Mar. 1883 They lived in Brooklyn NY 304 Carlton Ave. Can do better if you have approximate ages for the people you are seeking. Hi, I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of a Slattery Hat Company, which existed around World War I, probably in Newark or Harrison. My G-g uncle, John Slattery, ran this company and it was apparently involved in some sort of scandal around 1918-1922 with the US Army for which it contracted. Perhaps it was mentioned in a city directory around this time? Or maybe there exists a newspaper index somewhere that might help me identify a mention of this company? Any help, leads, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Joe Price __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Friends. Fun. Try the all-new Yahoo! Messenger. http://messenger.yahoo.com/
Would some kind soul with access to the 1900 census check for any GRAVENHORST families in NY, NJ or the east coast? Gravenhorst is a relatively uncommon name in the east so any families there will be of interest to me. Particularly looking for George or Paul Gravenhorst of New York State. Also a Helen Gravenhorst of CT or NJ. Is there an indexed 1870 census available? I need information on GRAVENHORST families in 1870 also. Thanks for any help/suggestions. Janice in Canada

Does anyone know if there is a web site I can go to to find the wards and enumeration districts for Newark for the 1900 Federal census? I won't be able to visit the state archives any time soon, and I am trying to find the ward and district for 322 South 18th Street so I can search on-line. Thanks! Stephanie
If someone has access to the 1915 NJ state census for Newark, please look up Edward (or Edgar) BROSS, wife, Blanche, and daughter, Mary BROSS, born 1910. They were residing at 212 Parker St., Newark. I need whatever information might be noted. Thank you. Mona Bross Hylton, Richmond, IN
I have had this commemorative church plate in my possession for years. The church is located on the corner of Park Ave and Day Street in Orange, NJ. I am posting this on the chance someone may need the info that is on the back. It reads as follows: "The picture on this plate represents the third Church building, the present church edifice, of the Methodist Church in Orange, N.J. The corner stone was laid on October 1, 1904 and dedicatory services held on November 12, 1905. The Methodist Church in Orange, N. J. was organized in 1829 and incorporated in 1830. The congregation met in Masonic Hall, Main Street, Orange, N.J. until 1832 when the first church building, a modest structure 40 X 50, was erected in Main Street Orange, next to the Masonic Hall. After 28 years from the date of the incorporation the second church structure as completed in 1858, the first church structure being moved to the rear of the lot to be used as a Chapel." Dot

Well, I just got back from vacationing in Southern California and in my snail mail mailbox I had a letter from the Social Security Administration! I thought it was one of those letters from them telling me what my monthly payout would be if I were to retire. No so! I received their response to my inquiry (the long form) for information on my grandmother! Now I know at least how her name was spelled at least for this document! AND I now know that her fathers name was John (though I think it is actually Ivan because of her middle name, which SSA didnt have) AND I have the name of her mother! AND Where she was born! Now I just have to find out from the spelling of her place of birth if it still exists and if it is actually the correct spelling My grandmother just signed it with an x and my father filled out the form for her. He signed it and wrote son in parentheses there is also someone elses signature on it, I have not a clue who that might be, unless it is someone who might have witnessed it This is the info that SSA gave me: Anna Migora Father: John Migora Mother: Barta Karory or Karony (cant quite tell because there is some slight smudging) <-- do you think this woman is Belarusian, Ukrainian, or Polish? Born: Veelah, Poland-Russia Now my question is how do I go about finding out where Veelah is? I did a Google search and nothing comes up that might be remotely close All best wishes SallyEllen R. Hello Sally, for starters, may I suggest placing a post on GenForum under both Poland and Russia forums...identify the name of the locality for which you are seeking info, and also family surname. I, myself, had very good luck on the GenForum Lithuania Board, and a nice Lithuanian resident provided me not only with Localtiy info but also snailmail addresses of two cousins. Good luck, Jan in CA -- ... life is a gift, use it well every day... ---------- >From: "Sally Schilling" <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] >Subject: [NJESSEX] Anna Iovana Ryzuk! >Date: Sat, May 15, 2004, 5:29 PM > > Well, I just got back from vacationing in Southern California and in my > snail mail mailbox I had a letter from the Social Security Administration! > I thought it was one of those letters from them telling me what my monthly > payout would be if I were to retire. Hi all, Dumb question # 83 .... How do I get my new e-mail address updated at this site so I can still receive all of the infomative e-mails? I have tried but just can't seem to get it changed. Anyone? George Lusardi new e-mail address ... [email protected]
My guess would be that this is Augustine J. Curley O.S.B. from St. Benedict's Prep. Father Curley is extremely busy but you can try to reach him at his email address <[email protected]> You can see a listing of what he has at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~njessex/alpha/lookups.htm At 02:19 PM 5/11/2004, Ilsa wrote: >I was just going thru some old "Genealogical Helper" magazines, and came >across an article I had circled in Nov/Dec 1983 issue: > >"James Curley, 528 High Street, Newark, NJ 07102 has copies of gravestone >inscriptions from four Belleville (Essex County) NJ cemeteries (St Peter's >RC, Dutch Reformed; Wesley Methodist; and Christ Episcopal).
