    1. Newark Funeral Home (1904)--George Bru......& Son
    2. I have a copy of a death record from 1904 in Newark. The funeral home is listed as "Geo.Brun......& Son. I can't make out the name--could it be "Brueckner?" The address was 161 Belmont Ave. (Burial was in Woodland Cemetery.) Does anyone know what the name of the funeral home might be and is it still in existence? And if so, is the address still 161 Belmont Ave., Newark? Thanks. Mona

    1. Williams Homestead
    2. Jane W. Williams
    3. Looking for the approximate location of the Marie A. Williams homestead called "Walnut Lawn" in an area called Mount Prospect according to a newspaper article of about 1893. At that time the homestead was 200 years old. Miss Williams was the daughter of Orlando and Hannah Condit Williams. I have the newspaper picture of a room in the old house that I would be willing to share. Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated as I'm trying to piece areas together in my family. 1. Surnames & Forenames
    2. First Families
    3. Hello New Jersey Researchers: For those of you who have a deep interest in how, when and where your Surnames were formed I would like to direct you to 5 new pages we have recently added to our web site. Many researchers have for years believed that all ancestors with the same Surname were at some point related. That is simply not true. When you get back to proving your pre 1500s ancestors you will discover that there are in fact many Surnames that have passed through many families that have no relationship whatsoever. The 5 pages mentioned also contain information on many Forenames and their creation and some of the pages are large so relax and take your time. THE ORIGIN OF THE SURNAME PART 1 THE ORIGIN OF THE SURNAME PART 2 THE ORIGIN OF THE FORENAME FORENAMES OF WOMEN AND THEIR SIGNIFICANCE FORENAMES OF MEN AND THEIR SIGNIFICANCE .......................................................................... There is much information here that should be of interest to all. Go to our web site at: http://www.linkline.com/personal/xymox/ Once there enter the link titled "ORIGIN OF SURNAMES & FORENAMES" this will take you to the index for the 5 pages. For those of you who are AOL members you may have trouble connecting to many pages that may come up with a message such as "Page Does Not Exist" and you can cure that by using your browser feature of Copy and Paste the URL to your browser and then enter from there. All pages contained within our web pages are free for viewing and study by all interested researchers. The very best to you all. Enjoy. Harold Oliver Director America's First Families

    1. New Genealogy: Family Histories Requested
    2. This message is being posted for the notice of all descendants of the 1663 immigrant David Demarest, owner of the "French Patent" in Bergen County, New Jersey. A new genealogy of the Demarest family is in preparation and descendants are requested to share their Demarest-related family history with the Demarest Genealogical Society's editorial group. In addition, researchers of the family are invited to share information which amends and/or corrects Voorhis Demarest's 1964 genealogy. Instructions for submitting data are below, and at bottom is a press release, provided for informational purposes. For more on the Demarest Genealogical Society please go to http://demarests.com WANTED: YOUR DEMAREST FAMILY HISTORY There is still time to submit your Demarest family history for the Demarest Genealogical Society’s December ’05 publication of the new Demarest genealogy. Demarest descendants are requested to send their information to the address, or email address, below. Data from ALL Demarest descendants, of all surnames, will be gratefully accepted into The Demarest Project, which includes the new genealogy and the Demarest Database. Additional information will be provided to anyone who requests it. Memberships and publication offerings will be made available in the near future. CONTACT for family history submissions: Nancy Terhune Morrison, Eastern Regional Director & Materials Editor 316 Howard Avenue, Fair Lawn, NJ 07410 [email protected] CONTACT for membership and other information: Marc Demarest, Executive Director, at [email protected] PRESS RELEASE: For Immediate Release Contact: Nancy T. Morrison The Demarest Genealogical Society 316 Howard Avenue Fair Lawn, NJ 07410 [email protected] ph 201.797.9196 fax 201.797.3065 DEMAREST GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY’S NEW GENEALOGY, HISTORY, PUBLISHING IN 2005 Executive Director Marc Demarest of the Demarest Genealogical Society (DGS) has announced that the updated and corrected genealogy of the Demarest family is on track for a December 2005 publication date, and that the organization is still seeking and accepting contributions of family data from all Demarest descendants living in the United States and Canada. The revised genealogy will additionally include significant new research on the European origins of the Demarest family in the US and Canada, and offer new insights into previously published theories that the family descends both from Charles the Great, or Charlemagne, and from the desMarest family of Cambresis in what is today northern France. “Research methods have changed significantly in the past forty-odd years, as has access to primary records in the US and in Europe,” remarked Marc Demarest. “We now have the ability to extend and enhance Voorhis Demarests’ monumental 1964 work with new information, to extend his work to cover fully both Canadian family members and those Demarest family members not descended directly from David Demarest, and to enrich people’s understanding of the family’s European ancestry.” The Demarest family in the United States and some parts of Canada, is descended from David Demarest and his wife Marie Sohier, who held the 17th century “ French Patent” in Bergen County, New Jersey. The Demarests, who emigrated in 1663 from the Netherlands, were Huguenots – Protestant Christians from an area of modern-day France that was controlled by Catholic states – who moved from that area to the Dutch Republic, then the Palatinate (modern-day Germany) and finally to the United States in an effort to practice their religion unmolested. The family initially lived on Staten Island (New York), then owned land in New Haarlem, now the northern end of Manhattan, and finally relocated to New Jersey. They were among the founding families of Bergen County. Their descendants – at least 3000 US residents bear a version of the family surname – now live in every state in the US and most Canadian provinces. The last Demarest genealogy was published in 1964 by Voorhis Demarest and was a complete re-working of an earlier genealogy, published by Mary and William Demarest in 1938. The new genealogy project, approved by the heirs of Voorhis Demarest, will be available in both printed and database form. All descendants of the immigrant David Demarest are encouraged to contribute their family histories to the new Demarest genealogy project. Anyone who wishes to submit information may send it to Nancy Morrison, the materials editor, at 316 Howard Avenue, Fair Lawn, NJ, 07410 or [email protected] Submitters are requested to provide the sources or stories of the information they submit and any related information they would like to contribute. The deadline for submissions is February 1, 2005. For more information on the Demarest Genealogical Society, go to http://demarests.com #

    1. RE: 1855 New Jersey State Census
    2. Joan M Lowry
    3. Jeanette The 1855 NJ State Census should be available for Essex County (including present day Union County). It is, however, incomplete for Essex County. I do not know what parts of Essex are included, nor do I know what parts are missing. This information is taken from the guide published by the NJ State Archives. 1855 is incomplete for fourteen counties and does not exist for 6 other counties. The guide does not explain why the census is incomplete - but I suspect that it is probably due to the storage of the census records at the local level "way back when." Probably some towns and counties didn't bother to keep them, or they were destroyed in local flooding or fires... Hope that helps! Joan Joan M. 1. Newark City Directory, 1930's--James B. HIGGINS
    2. If someone has has access to Newark City Directories for the 1930's, could you see if there is a listing for a James B. HIGGINS? He was a photographer in the late 1930's and I don't know how much prior to that. He was born 1902 in Maryland and was in the Army in WWII. The only information that I really am interested in, is his address for those years of 1930's in Newark. He was a special friend of my parents (my parents died much too young) and contact was lost. From the SSDI, I found that James died in 1995 in Florida. If there is an occupation listed other than photographer in the city directories, I would appreciate knowing that. Thank you.
