    3. Did it again. Got the subject line wrong. Here's the correct one. - NJEssex moderator Hello Everyone, We had a great response with the letter 'G'. Time to move on to the letter 'H'. Let's start posting surnames that start with the letter 'H'. RULES: ======================================= 1. Your subject line: [NJESSEX] [H] SURNAME - city So if you are researching the surname HUNT in Nutley your subject line should read [NJESSEX] [H] HUNT - Nutley or if you have a timeframe it could also be [NJESSEX] [H] HUNT - Nutley (1880-1900) 2. Maximum time devoted to a single letter with be 1 week 3. Minimum time will be 48-hours if there's not a lot of activity or response 4. Surnames should be all CAPS to stand out 5. If you have a long surname then keep the subject line short. Long subject lines will get cut-off by your email program. Reserve important details for the text in the body. 6. Body - be precise. List pertinent names, dates, events, questions in the body text. 7. Important: list dates/years if known. Your John Anderson born in 1900 will not be the same as someone elses John Anderson born in 1875. But without any dates noone will know. 8. When replying about any NAME asked for, reply to the LIST, not just to the sender. Members who may have ancillary connections, will get the benefit. And we'll make new friends as well! 9. Finally, close your email with your name and your email address. 10. HAVE FUN !!!!!! If you have any questions, PLEASE, don't hesitate to contact me. Have fun posting! 1. [NJESSEX] [G] GIBBONS Newark 1880's - 1920
    2. SHAWN DEMPSEY
    3. I am interested in anyone with connections to a GIBBONS family in Newark (1880's - 1920). Martha Gibbons (born in Ireland) had 2 sons and a daughter (all born in England) Thomas E. Gibbons Daniel Gibbons Gertrude Gibbons Now the Gibbons married into my DEMPSEY family via a colateral line. Gertrude Gibbons married Daniel Dempsey (my great-grandfather's brother) in 1907. Daniel Dempsey died in 1918. Here's the reason I'm interested in finding a descendant of the Gibbons: A few years ago I found out where Daniel Dempsey was buried in Holy Sepulchre. On a trip there in 2003 I went to the cemetery to see if there was a headstone and I literally tripped over the stone. The stone had sunk down into the earth so that only about 4 inches was sticking out of the ground. I was with several of the grounds people and they offered to pull the stone out for me. The next thing I know they have driven over a backhoe and they slowly pulled the stone from the ground. I was expecting to see my Daniel Dempsey on the stone but instead it was Thomas Gibbons. He died also in 1918 while serving in the Army Corp of Engineers during WWI. I spoke to Kathy at the Holy Sepulchre office and she confirmed for me that Daniel Dempsey and Thomas Gibbons were buried in the same grave. I'd like to contact any Gibbons decendants to let them know what I have found. The stone is a nice military headstone and I think Thomas E. Gibbons deserves a chance to be "found" by his family again. Shawn

    1. Re: [NJESSEX] Letter G--Elias Gard(t)ner
    2. Mary Lish
    3. Hi Shirley, In our Woodland Cemetery (Newark) database, I have a Victoria Gartner, date of burial September 27, 1897, and another burial for an Elias Gardner, date of burial November 18, 1902. Victoria was 69y at death and Elias 74y, making them both born around 1828 and, if they are the ones you are looking for, around 25y at marriage. They are not buried together - both are in single graves in different sections of the cemetery. We have a little more information - place of death, exact cemetery location, undertaker, etc.; you can contact me off-list if you would like that information. It sounds like a possible match. It should be easy to confirm with death certificates from the Trenton Archives. If you do confirm, we ask that you help us improve our database by providing us with additional information on the individuals. Thank you. Good luck! 1. [NJESSEX] GREEN/1850/Newark
    2. Loreen Wells
    3. I am looking for any information on the GREEN name for 1850. My ggrandfather was in the Newark census for that year, his name Francis C. GREEN. He was single. He was born in England. I don't know when he came to this country, but suspect it may have been as an adult. I don't know if he was in Newark for any length of time or if he was just passing through. He spent much of his adult life in Dutchess Co. NY. The census gives his age as 23, but all other records have him b. ca. 1829, which would make him about 21 in 1850. He was a carriage trimmer. I found a whole raft of GREENS in Newark that census, many of them in the carriage building business and most of them close to Francis in the census pages. One of those GREENS was listed as a carriage builder, presumeably running a manufacturing business. Perhaps carriage building was a family business. Loreen Wells
