Author: jmyoung365 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newjersey.counties.cumberland/2532.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: There was a post on the GARRISON surname board/list a couple years ago about DNA testing and the lengthly post claimed that there were mulitple origins for the GARRISONs including those in Cumberland and Salem counties: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/garrison/2006-01/1136917095 Apparently line #6 descending from "early David" is the one we've been discussing with the allegation of Indian ancestry. No ducumentation was presented -- just the story that the immigrant ancestor in the early 1600s had married a "Delaware Indian." So that allegation may be the basis for the many family stories of GARRISON Native American heritage. There is another way of "proving" NA (or other Asian) ancestry that no one has mentioned as yet in this thread. Asians (including Native Americans) have differences in their teeth and gums from Europeans. If a person inherits Indian (or Asian) shovel or scoop teeth it would be an indication of Asian or NA blood. If a person who believes they are only part NA does NOT inherit the "Asian" teeth it doesn't prove they do NOT have NA blood--but the presence of this trait pretty much proves they DO. A dentist could confirm or refute the presence of the so-called "Indian teeth." I thought this sounded like a myth when I first heard about it so I asked my dentist and he confirmed that the trait does exist.
