Elwell living in Hopewell, Cumberland Co, NJ in the 1840 census also. This one would appear to be the Thomas Sheppard Elwell you mention as he is living next door to a Richard Sheppard. He is the right age between 30 - 40 yrs. old. Perhaps there were 2 Thomases b. abt. the same time. Have you contacted Barb McCormick? She has a lot of Elwell data. Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: My ancestor, Thomas S. ELWELL (b. 1806), was in Chester Co., PA by 1840, where he appears in the census in London Grove Township. By 1850 he had settled in Franklin Twp., Chester Co. where he died in 1868 and was buried at the Kemblesville Presbyterian Church (now United Methodist). I believe he is the same Thomas Elwell who is in the 1830 census in Stow Creek Twp., Cumberland Co., NJ, and the same Thomas Sheppard ELWELL who was the son of Samuel and Rachel (Sheppard) ELWELL of Roadstown, Cumberland Co., NJ (who sold land to the Cohansey Baptist Church in 1799). This family can be traced back to the Pilesgrove District of Salem Co., NJ. I would appreciate any information or suggestions that could help me to definitively connect my Thomas S. ELWELL in Chester Co. to Stow Creek. Thanks. Fred Kelso Oxford, PA
