    1. Re: [NJCUMBER] Dilks-Steel(e) 1800s, mixed counties
    2. I don't know your James Dilks but can look around. The James T. Dilks (parents Jos.and Rachael Sickler Dilks) that you find in 1860 Gloucester is m. to my Lydia B. LACY (Parents Thomas and Rachael Bates LACY). Regards, Joan In a message dated 8/29/2005 1:21:02 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: At the Millville Historical Society I found a death stat for Elizabeth Steel (Steele) of Dec. 14, 1893. I presume she died in Millville. It listed her parents as James and Ann Dilks, and says she was born in Glassboro. Elizabeth was the widow of William Steele Sr. I had erroneously thought her maiden name was Elliot. Based on varying Census info, William Sr. was b. between 1812 and 1818 (possibly in Pa.), and Elizabeth between 1817 and 1825. Seen in Millville in 1880 is William, 62 (therefore born about 1818) and wife is Elizabeth, 55 (b. 1825?). They have 3 grown children sharing the household: Mary Facemire 40, (b. 1840); Thomas 28. (b. 1852); Kate 24. (b. 1856). Kate is Single, Mary is called Married and Thomas is Widowed. There are also grandchildren Arania, 14 and Edward Steele, 5 whom I assume belong to Thomas. Out of the nest by 1880 is their son, William Jr. He lived approx. 1855 to 1927 and died in Millville (Cumberland County). William Jr.'s grandson, my father, clearly remembers when William Jr. died, but not much else. William Jr. is in the 1880 census at age 25, working as a glassblower. He and wife Mary (Horton), age 17, have an 11 month-old son Frank, and I happen to know they named later children Edna, Emma, Alma and William Carlton Steele. Frankie and Edna died as children. Alma and W. Carlton both married, but had no issue. My GM, Emma Steele Langley (1881-1982) did have four sons who lived. Two of these sons had no children, but Emma bore H. Norman (1903-91) who later had a son, the late J. Donald. Donald has 6 living offspring, but since none is a researcher, I stand alone in asking if any of you Dilks sleuths can help out here! Backing up to 1870, William Sr. was called a "Stael" in the Millville Census: William, 55, Elizabeth, 50, Mary 31 (Facemire), Samuel 29, Christiana, 22, Thomas, 21, Kate 18, William 16, Harriet 9, Arana 4, and Frank Facemire, 13. In 1860 they were renting in Bridgeton: William "Steel" 48; Elizabeth, 45; Samuel 23; Sarah 20; Christiana 16; Thomas 11; Katey 9; William 7; Charlie Francis 4 (Steel crossed out - this is Frank Facemire, son of the Steele daughter Mary Facemire, 25.) There is a James Dilks in Gloucester County in 1860 who is old enough to be E's father, but his wife is not an Ann. The 1850 finds the Steeles in Gloucester County (Franklinville, I think!): William, 37; Elizabeth, 33; Samuel 13; Sarah 10; Christiana, 5; Thomas 2. I once saw this Census first hand, but now have HeritageQuest, which does not index the 1850, so I wonder if anyone can find James and Ann Dilks on Ancestry that year, or earlier (William Steel/Staehl too, for that matter). I notices some Dilks graves at Porchtown (Zion) which is where Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties come together, but must go back now that I've found some Dilks G-G-GP's. ============================== Find your ancestors in the Birth, Marriage and Death Records.
