Author: murphybean Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newjersey.counties.cumberland/2484.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I was wondering if something happened to Mr. Reeves then what would happen to the records. I asked him if I could go and copy them and he said something like I wouldn't be able to read them or something. I was concerned that they could be lost. My great grandfather is buried there and he had to go to the basement to look up the name and just knew the area. I would like to put a new stone on the grave but do not know exactly where it is. I have heard that when a person dies who manages the records sometimes a wife or new tenant comes in and throws out the records. Author: geomillard Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newjersey.counties.cumberland/2483.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm using the original Mount Pleasant Cemetery Sexton book. This is the same book Mr. Hartman copied years ago and is available at several historical societies. While the cemetery opened in 1866, only one burial took place that year. That particular burial is without a marker so visually any markers within the cemetery reflecting death dates in 1866 or prior would have been moved there. The cemetery contains over 16,600 markers of one type or another. These I have logged into Excel and can quickly search out a name. I'm currently logging the sexton book and will be able to do the same with it. Most of us familiar with Mount Pleasant are aware parts of three other local cemeteries were moved there. As near as I can tell there are no records that reflect just who was moved. As I understand it, neither the city, Trinity Church nor the old cemetery up around 7th or 8th street have records that exist today. Anyway, what I'm trying to do is update what Mr. Hartman accomplished. The sexton book ends in 1926 and I'll probably go to some point in mid-2008, Gee, hope I don't end up on my own list . . . never thought about that. A data base that can be searched is a plus. This isn't a for profit project, just a love of history. The cemetery and local historical societies will be given hard copies. Those of you who have viewed the sexton records are already aware several large gaps in time exist. Frustrating to the researcher and the current cemetery staff. I still have hopes that additional records exist in an attic somewhere. Hope this clears up my little project. George Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. I would tend to agree with you .... should something happen to Mr Reeves, then who would then be in charge of these records? Is there any committee or council in Cumberland County that could request the records be copies without getting a response that amounts to Mr Reeves saying "No you can't copy them" . After all, they aren't his personal property and there should be an extensive copy somewhere other than his basement. I asked Reeves if there was a way to get to his records and he told me no, they are in his basement. Are you just going by the stones or the actual records? " ----- Yes, I'm curious about that, too! Obviously the Reeveses have complete lot purchase and burial records from 1865 forward, or would be accidentally burying one on top of the other! Charles Hartman made a huge map of tombstone locations and wording (in the 1980s, maybe?). This gem is owned by the Millville Historical Society, and has a dependable Index. Naturally, that project didn't account for those with stolen or unreadable stones, or who never had them in the first place. The Society also has Mount Pleasant burial record books, but I don't know if these match what the Cemetery Association has. If they are not complete copies, then careful digital photos should be made immediately and housed at the MHS or CCHS for research use; it makes me nervous to think that the ONLY copy of something that precious is in some basement! -- Delaware Dolores (grew up in Millville) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Many thanks to the Gun Club for all their hard work at Mt. Pleasant. I have ancestors buried there, and I really appreciate knowing there are people who care enough to right the wrongs that seem too frequent these days. Future generations who read the messages on the stones will be very grateful to those who helped preserve them. Carol Indiana
