I just did a check of census records (primarily because these claims of Indian ancestry fascinate me and most turn out to be mythical). What I found consistently on the census records is the parents being John C. and Mary GARRISON and daughter Elizabeth being born about 1840. This age for Elizabeth is supported by later census records in which she appears with her husband William H. TAYLOR. In every instance Elizabeth (and all other family members) are listed as White. I feel very certain there is no Indian connection on the GARRISON side here...and I don't think there is on the mother's side. I found the marriage of John GARRISON to Mary HEPNER on 5 Oct. 1839. They appear to be Elizabeth's parents and Mary is also White. She appears to be the daughter of Jacob HEPNER of Deerfield based on the 1830 census for Deerfield, Cumberland County. The household has a daughter the right age to be Mary HEPNER. Joan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. Many families have oral history that can't be proven. I've also heard and read of a GARRISON story about a Swedish Princess who was shipwrecked and rescued by a GARRISON hunter. If the stories have any merit there would need to be some sort of evidence to support it. Show us the evidence. It reminds me of the story that went unchallenged for a hundred years in the HAINES family of Burlington County that Richard HAINES' wife Mary CARLILE was a Native American who was taken in by an English family and taught to read and write. The story was very elaborate and was spread from generation to generation until about 10 years when the evidence was found to prove that Mary CARLILE was of French huguenot descent explaining her dark eyes and hair that had been rumored to be Indian. 3. "If the stories have any merit there would need to be some sort of evidence to support it. Show us the evidence." I agree with you that oral history needs some evidence to prove or disprove it. It's great that we now have DNA testing that can provide scientific evidence on ancient origins. 3. Laura Gaskill Hager's well documented book "Pierre Cresson The Huguenot & Some of His Decedents" (Cresson, Demarest, De la Plain, Garrison) gives the early history of the Garrison family. Mrs. Hager has a tintype of Joshua Garrison & Mary Warful Garrison. She describes Joshua as a "tall lean, good looking man." & Mary as having "strong features with straight dark hair." She gives their family history along with some oral family history. Mary E. Warful was born July 1, 1817 & died Nov. 2, 1891 at Millville, NJ. Mary Warful Garrison was the daughter of John Warful & Eleanor Lore-Blizzard. Mary's mother Eleanor was a Lore but took the name of her step-father Blizzard after her father Isaac Lore died. Mrs. Hager also speaks of the oral history regarding the Garrison Native American blood. I'm a Garrison descendant & the same oral history Mrs Hager presents has been in my family. It has never been proved to my knowledge but the oral history states the Native American blood came into the Garrison line of Turkey Point from the Simpkins family who were of Lenni Lenape descent. I hope this adds something to your previous discussions. I recommend Mrs. Hager's book as a reliable source for the Garrison family researchers. 1. [NJCUMBER] Cumberland County Records Storage
    2. andrea batcho
    3. I just saw this in the Bridgeton News. Contract awarded for Cumberland County records storage update by South Jersey News Online Wednesday July 23, 2008, 8:43 AM By MATT DUNN mdunn@sjnewsco.com HOPEWELL TWP. -- Cumberland County freeholders awarded a contract earlier this month to Eagle Construction Service Inc. to provide renovations to the county records storage facility. The storage facility, a two-story brick building located next to the county juvenile detention center on Sunnyslope Drive, is being converted to hold the county's vast archive of records. In the future, it may store municipal records as well. "Right now, records are being stored all over," County Administrator Ken MeCouch said on Tuesday. "We're looking to consolidate them into one location. When the project's finished, we'll be moving our records management office out there." Renovations to the building began last year through a $1 million Public Archives and Records Infrastructure Support (PARIS) grant. Already, boxes of old vital statistics records and election records have been stored at the facility. The former boiler room needs much work before the rest of the county's records can be transferred there, according to MeCouch. "It needs some electrical work, window renovations, plumbing and HVAC," MeCouch said. Eagle Construction Services Inc., a Burlington-based construction firm, was awarded a $516,514 contract to complete the work. -- Cumberland County Genealogists can order a 2 CD set of high resolution photographs of the original records of the Old Cohansey Baptist Church at Roadstown!
