These are not "true" records: that is, they are not based on some old record found in a town hall or something. These are DERIVED records. Mormon missionaries assembled these records by collating from several sources, and often they assign based on too few factors. I've seen this exact circumstance three times in my own research; they knew that John Smith married Jane Doe, but didn't account for the fact that there were several John Smiths and Jane Does in the area, and created a marriage record for the wrong pair. Took me two years to discover why I couldn't make all the facts line up. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. No ducumentation was presented -- just the story that the immigrant ancestor in the early 1600s had married a "Delaware Indian." So that allegation may be the basis for the many family stories of GARRISON Native American heritage. There is another way of "proving" NA (or other Asian) ancestry that no one has mentioned as yet in this thread. Asians (including Native Americans) have differences in their teeth and gums from Europeans. If a person inherits Indian (or Asian) shovel or scoop teeth it would be an indication of Asian or NA blood. If a person who believes they are only part NA does NOT inherit the "Asian" teeth it doesn't prove they do NOT have NA blood--but the presence of this trait pretty much proves they DO. A dentist could confirm or refute the presence of the so-called "Indian teeth." I thought this sounded like a myth when I first heard about it so I asked my dentist and he confirmed that the trait does exist. Author: SaraHoffman505 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newjersey.counties.cumberland/2532/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Garrisons of Cumberland Co are descendants of Gerrit Jansen Van Oldenburg & his wife Clara Matthys through their son Jacob Gerrits de Haes (Garrison) & his wife Christina Cresson. Since early documentation shows this specific Garrison male line to be of European descent YDNA will not prove Native American ancestry unless there has been a FPE (false paternal event) such as an adoption or an out of wedlock birth by a Native American male who came into the Garrison male line & assumed the Garrison name. If there is Native American blood in the Garrison family & it didn't involve a FPE then it came into the family through a female & is found in mtDNA not YDNA. There are other Garrisons in the USA, some but not all relate to our common ancestor in America Gerrit Jansen Van Oldenburg. According to IDENTIGENE DNA, a site that markets Native American DNA testing, certain DNA markers can show which ones are relatively unique to a specific population & predict inheritance percenta! ges. These markers as reported by this group have the ability to differentiate between major geographic regions such as Native Americans in North & South America. Possibly as the field of genetic genealogy progresses & more DNA testing is done on the Garrisons of Cumberland Co & their related families, we will reach a scientific conclusion for the question, does the Garrisons of Cumberland Co have or don't have Native American ancestry? 3. John, Over the years I've accumulated quite a lot of Garrison information so always curious when I see new names like Acneas appear. I believe your Acneas may be a mispelling of the name Enos. Checked Ancestry's census records & find living in 1860 Pittsgrove Township Salem Co., NJ. Enos Garrison age 25, with wife Ann Elizabeth age 23, daughter Hannah age 2 & son Albert age 2.12. 1870 living in Cumberland Co., Millville, NJ. Eliza Garrison (probably Ann Elizabeth) age 30, daughter Hannah age 13, son Albert age 11 Anna age 7 & Jesse age 1. It appears Enos may have died around 1868 or 1869.
