Does anyone have information on Lavinia McGee and Charles Westcott married in Cumberland Co late 1700s. When did he die? Were there any children? Sexton burial records for Fairton Church give a couple of times graves were dug for a Charles Westcott. I can't tell if it is for him or for a child. Also who is his father?

I am trying to link up my ggg grandfather, James Penn b. 1759 in Cumberland Co., NJ ( I believe), with preceding members of the PENN family. What I have now is speculative and based on two somewhat different accounts in the separate histories of Monmouth and Burlington Counties. These accounts list James PENN's children's names as follows: Stacy (1805), Jonathan (1807), John, Joel, Hannah, Elizabeth, Rhoda, James, William (1819). Stacy was my gg grandfather. History of Monmouth Co., NJ "It is said that William Penn, the founder of Philadelphia, had an reprobate son, and from him descended the Penns of Cumberland, Burlington and Ocean Counties. James Penn, Sr. emigrated from Cumberland Co. NJ to Washington Twp., Burlington Co. NJ. He settled on the West Plains, where he lived until about the year 1840, when he died, aged 88 yrs; therefore he must have been born about the year 1752. He had brothers, William, Richard and Samuel, who remained in Cumberland County. It is said by those who have seen the statue of William Penn the great, and are acquainted with the descendants of the above said James Penn, that the posterity of James Penn, at least some of them, have a striking resemblance to the statue, and other representations of the founder of Philadelphia. James Penn, Sr., of the West Plains had children: William, James, Joel, Jonathan, Stacy, John, Elizabeth, Rhoda, and Hannah. William, son of James Penn, Sr., married Sarah Jenkins, and had children, Jesse, Zephaniah, James, William, Susan, and Lucy Ann. Rhoda, daughter of James Penn, Sr., married Zachariah Jenkins. Elizabeth daughter of James Penn, Sr., married Lewis Russell, and among their children were James, Ridgway, Champion, and Samuel. Jesse Penn married Rebecca, daughter of Jacob Headley. Zephaniah Penn married Hope, daughter of Jacob Headley. The posterity of James Penn, Sr., is quite numerous, but I cannot trace them, several of them went to the West." History of Burlington County, NJ Washington Twp. "It is said that William Penn, the founder of Philadelphia, had an adopted son, and from him descended the Penns of Cumberland, Burlington and Ocean Counties. James Penn, Sr. emigrated from Cumberland Co. NJ to Washington Twp., Burlington Co. NJ. He settled on the West Plains, where he lived until about the year 1814, when he died, aged 88 yrs........" I suspect there are two different James Penns here. The earlier, born abt. 1729, would coincide time wise with the one that married Elizabeth Alloways Nov 3, 1849, Northampton. Or, the date could be in error, fourteen instead of forty. In addition and with respect to James's unknown wife, could his son Stacy's name be from a Mahlon Stacy, the founder of Trenton, descendant? If anyone can shed light on this matter, please forward such information. Thank you for your time and effort. Don Jones
Thank you Pam, I will check that out. My Great Grandparents, Jesse Daniel and Mary Lucy Brown Barton were in Parksville, Sullivan Co. in the 1880 census and I think for the birth of a son b. 1882 and then in 1884 they left Vineland, N.J. with their 10 children by train for Oceana Co., Michigan. Jesse's mother (Eleanor? Jane Galloway Barton was living with them in the 1880 census in Parksville, and then I have lost her. Am trying to figure out where she died because she didn't come to Michigan with them. Jesse was a carpenter and cabinette maker by trade and was hired to come to the Great Lakes to build ships and am guessing that perhaps he was working in shipyards in Vineland. I wonder about the history of ship building in the Vineland area in the late 1800's. A John Henry Barton left Parksville and went to Vineland at the same time. I feel he must be related to my G. Grandfather Jesse but have no proof yet. If you have any other suggestions I would really appreciate hearing them. Incidentally, we have friends in Muskegon, Michigan whose name is (Gerald) Lafferty in case you are interested. Best wishes, V.
