Am researching the Alcorn/Holmes/Osborn/Trout/Lake lines in South New Jersey, particularly Cumberland County. Elizabeth Lake is daughter of Robert Lake Sr. and Mary Hall, married 23 July 1815. Elizabeth married Jacob Trout, date of marriage unknown as is Jacob Trout's birth date and Elizabeth's birth date. Any info would be appreciated and I am happy to share what I have. Barbara, Thanks for the reply. Do you show any siblings and dates for Thomas Scudder of Mt.Olive Twp.,NJ His dates make it feasible that he would be in the right age range for my Frank Scudder of Fairton and Camden. I heard from a man who remembered a younger Frank Scudder from the 1930s or 1940s , who lived near Fairton in Cedarville or Rockville. He said that he had 2 children, a boy and a girl named Peggy. Try him at: jeffers2@atlantic.net Let me know about Thomas' siblings,OK? Thanks so much. Joan in NJ
Is anyone researching the Fithians in Bridgton? Specifically Robert E or Marjorie. I have a cigar box of letters, pictures, postcards, bills, etc. that I bought in a box-lot at an auction. If this belongs to your family, please let me know. Thanks Geoffrey Cooper NJ LOOKUPS
Hi, Would you have any info. on the Lacy family's location c.1800-1850 or the primary concentration with this surname. Oral family history states that my Lacy family is definitely Scotch-Irish. Thank you for any help or info, Joan Lacy Fitzsimmons
Paul; Thanks for the reply. Back Neck is now a crossroads about 4 miles SW of Fairton. Apparently there is an intersection there where there is a road named Back Neck Rd. I heard from several people who use to live there in the 30s and 40s. The area leads towards the river and marshland. I have a book called "Forgotten Towns of Southern New Jersey," by Henry Charlton Beck. Chapter XXV,pg.191, is called "Fairfield: Fairton: New England Crossroads" and gives some good background on the early beginnings and settlers of that area. Now, if I could just locate my Frank Scudder who was located there in the mid to late 1800s and I believe, lived in Camden at the turn of the century with his wife, Augusta Stevens Scudder. Thanks for your interest and help. Joan Lacy Fitzsimmons in NJ

Date: Tuesday, March 30, 1999 3:12 PM I saw your return message to Pat. When I was young in Cedarville N.J,their was a Frank Scudder who lived by WILBURN store. I am talking in the early 1940s also my uncle Kenney Hildreth lived on rockville road in Back Neck. Frank Scudder had two children,a boy and a girl named Peggy who would be around 70. I am researching my ggrandfather Joseph Jeffries who in 1850, lived with a Dayton Husted in Greenwich. He was 20 years old and listed as a tradesman. My previous message may have been in error or reflected local lore. I called up a map in Microsoft's Streets Plus which shows road names in the area of Fairton. What I referred to as the Sea Breeze Road shows beginning as Back Neck Road out of Fairton. Seabreeze Road forks off Back Neck Road about four miles west of Fairton. The Back Neck Road continues another three miles or so west and south before ending. The other road out of Fairton is the Rockville Road. It proceeds west and south out of Fairton off Cedarville Road and meets Flat Top Road almost three miles from Fairton. My uncles lived a mile or less south of this intersection. Husted Landing (sic) Road extends south and west from flat Top Road. Husted's Landing was my cousin's boat livery which I believe is now run by his son Kenneth Laning Husted, Jr. if Lanny hasn't retired. I always heard of this area as Rockville. My memory of the area as also Back Neck may well be wrong. Flat Top Road also intersects the Back Neck Road. As best I can recall, the Herring Roe School that my father attended as a child was located at this intersection. I remember seeing the school. It could still be there. If anyone wants a copy of the Streets Plus map, let me know. Corrections to my memory are most welcome. Wil Husted Billings, MT. Pat, Yes it helps. The response to this question has been overwhelming. There are a lot of great people out there always willing to help. Thanks to all. Joan in NJ
Fairton is about three miles south of Bridgeton. Two of my uncles and a cousin lived in what I was always told was Back Neck four or five miles south of Fairton down toward the Delaware marshes. It is a farming area or at least was when I was a kid back in the 1930s. You could take the Sea Breeze road and turn left at Herring Roe School or proceed through Fairton and take a right toward the southern end of the village to get to Back Neck as I knew it. I don't have a good map of New Jersey to give precise directions. I recall my mother mentioning someone she called "Scudder" but don't recall anyone of that name in Back Neck but that doesn't mean someone of that name didn't live in the area in the 1930s and 40s. Hi everyone, The book, History of Gloucester, Salem and Cumberland Counties has several Robbins listed, I'm curious about a few of them. Firman/Furman (spelled both ways) was a Methodist Preacher in various churches in Cumberland County around the time frame 1860-1881. Lydia T. daughter of Benjamin Robbins, married David R. Black in the fall of 1860 Nathaniel Robbins, was a member of the General Free Assembly of West New Jersey for the Salem Tenth in 1842. Anyone have anything on these 3? Thanks, William Robbins
Wil, Thanks, you're an absolute gem! None of my newer maps shows Fairton, let alone Back Neck. I appreciate your help and directions to Back Neck. Joan Lacy Fitzsimmons in NJ
Ken, Thanks for the reply about Fairton. If you should ever hear about Back Neck, let me know! Thanks, Joan Lacy Fitzsimmons in NJ
Hi Inn. Saw that someone else posted some info on your question. All I can add is that Fairton is a little village in Fairfield Twp. "Back Neck" (still Fairfield Twp) is basically a rural road that goes from Fairton toward Seabreeze/along the Cohansey river. I've attached an old map - hope this helps. Pat, I saw your recent message about Fairfield. Did that area used to be called Fairton? My ggrandfather, Frank SCUDDER, supposedly came from Fairton and I'm not having much luck with any info or links. This would have been circa 1830s -1890s. He married Augusta Stevens, from a German family, of Phila. They then moved to Back Neck?(I really need help with the location of this old name!),and finally lived in Camden, I believe. They had 3 children: Anna, Lillian Stevens,b.Sept.,1883,d.1964?, and William "Will". If you have any info or resource for these old town locations I would appreciate hearing from you

However, the areas surrounding Cedarville overlap into Fairfield and Downe Twps. Cumb Co was set off from Salem Co in the 1750s. Hope this helps. PAT (researching Bennetts in 1700s Fairfield Twp)
