About Burton... my uncle Burt Alcorn still lives in Millville and your graduation date of 1966 is close to the time when he would have been in or completed high school. Seeing "Burton" in your earlier post sparked a fond memory of my great uncle Burton Alcorn who lived in Port Norris. I remember visiting grandmother, Isabel Alcorn (nee Holmes), on Sunday mornings and then walking across the street to Burton's house where he'd usually have a few candies to hand out. Burton was the closest I'd get to having a grandfather. His brother and my paternal grandfather, William Henry Alcorn, and my maternal grandfather, Peter Jurick, were both dead by the time I was born in 1955. I have Burton's bible. It is poor shape and deteriorating. I fear there is no salvaging it. A couple pages contain hand-written birth and marriage records. My parents tell me he gave it to them several days before he died. Jersey was Burton. I graduated Millville h.s. in 1966, but I think by then Burt had moved away. So, no, I don't think there is another Alcorn "looking" into local genealogy. It was YOUR name I meant to say, because you once said that Trout was yours, yet didn't add any more details. I hope you aren't the only one who finds the Parsons updates useful, as they so far represent a few of us making some very time consuming trips to courthouses, cem's and historical societies, paying for documents, plus phoning or visiting many co-descendants. I mentioned some others in my post earlier today, but we can certainly use more help in going to (or writing to) the above sources; buying needed CD's, NJ Archives documents or LDS microfilms, etc. We also still do welcome any written update you have since Parsons-granddaughter Adeline married your Trout. Can you recall when you first heard about Jehu Parsons, Sam? Are there any photos or papers you can share? -- Dolores

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wQB.2ACE/877.7 Message Board Post: This post got some varied response during 2003, which I certainly appreciate. However, since some of us were "talking" details behind the scenes in recent months, it's time to update website readers on some corrections and additions: -- Jehu Parsons died in his 90s, not 80s, as author Norman Bailey apparently thought. The 1830 census shows Jehu in his 90s, though his wife was in her 70s. This gives credence to a discovery by Lynn Ference of a Jehu Parsons b. 1736 in Cecil County, MD, with a brother William. (However, no trace of "our" Jehu is yet found between 1741 Cecil and NJ-Downe's 1773 tax rolls).) -- None of us now believes that Joanna, Johanna or Johannah was mother of Jonathan or any other child with Jehu Parsons, but only a 2nd or 3rd wife to a widower. She was a generation younger than Jehu, b. in the 1750s (maiden name and possible former married name unknown) then died in 1836 or 1837, a couple of years after Jehu. The preparer of the chart at Millville h.s. noted her as wife, so for a while we figured Bailey was wrong and Johanna was the mother of all the Downe twp. children. -- Jehu never mentioned a wife in his Will, suggesting he and Johanna were legally separated. Then, Johanna left just $1 to Nathan Parsons, middle son and co-executor for Jehu. She surely would have left more to him or his 6 younger offspring if any were hers. Instead, she left all to Reeves Roberson or Robinson (relationship unknown) as per her Will and Inventory obtained by Carol Saul Gromer. -- Bob Evans, when preparing the MHS chart likely started by his aunt Irene, did note, "may have had an earlier wife, Phebe." This is what Bailey wrote (and, in fact, Bailey seemed unaware of Johanna even though a legal ad in a newspaper proves he was legally married to J. by 1828). Since one of his Baileys md. a Parsons, and the Parsonses used the name Phebe a few times, we therefore believe Phebe was the mother of all 7 children named in Jehu's 1834 Will but had died by 1828. -- Since Jonathan (Jehu's oldest ch. mentioned in the Will) was born in 1776 when Jehu was 40, we further believe Jehu had an earlier marriage, but that no children from that one were living by 1834. There was a Wm. Parsons in Downe's 1793 Militia who may have been his son. -- No one has yet found parents for Jonathan's wife Martha Daniels, even after Sarah Robbins Hoffman paid for a NJ Archives search. -- Tom Hollinger has updated us on this site re the descendants of Rhoda Parsons and her spouse, whom records variably call Legar, Logan, Holegar and Hollinger. -- The Martha above was apparently married to a Stites prior to Jacob Laws, and the Lydia Parsons vs. Hankins "thing" is totally confusing. -- If Burton Alcorn or another follower of Trout and Jarrell/ Jerrell can update us on this branch, this will be welcomed for our update to the Jehu Descendants chart (minus living people's names, if you like). -- A single census stat in Ohio suggested that Sarah Parsons Tribbett, 2nd child of Jehu (or maybe first?) was b. in Delaware, but my several visits to the Del. Archives have not proven that. -- We still can't nail down the Jehu Parsons "link" to the Salisbury MD area, but d____ if they don't ALSO have 2 Jehu Parsons and other similar first and last names! They also have a "Parsonsburg" NE of Salisbury, at the end of a railroad, just like the "Parsonstown" near Port Norris NJ. I sincerely hope that further discussions on all South Jersey Parsons lines will take place on this website, as well as the Parsons sites offered by both Rootsweb and you-know-who. Gifford and then "the late wife of" Jacob D. Sheppard. She is buried next to John, whose stone LOOKS like Jy 17, 1840 to Apr 12, 1902.) In front of, but outside their curbed plot are small stones for an Ella V. Camp and a Frank M., with no dates. I get the impression these were babies. At the back of their plot, within the curbing, is a stone saying "Ella, dau. of John W. and Mary E. Gifford, July 30, 1867 to Aug. 23, 1885. " Next to this 18 year old girl's stone is a small one for "Elmer Carr, July 7, 1891, age 1 year." Obviously this is not Ella's baby, since she died in 1885, but whose is it? Someone obviously liked the name Ella. I assume that means you’ve heard stories, but neither you nor any of your cousins have actually gone to historical societies or courthouses for the "real thing." You also did not quote from any Census data, but since I have a distant Gifford myself (nee Margaret Langley 1850's to 1920's), I did check the 1920 Census for you, as a jump-start. In 1920 Millville, renting on Sassafras St., is Richard Hann, age 30 and wife Tillie, 28. He is a “general laborer.” They had no children, nor had they yet taken in their niece (your grandmother) Ella. Renting next door is a widow, Sarah Spencer, 73, and her single daughter Ella, 38 (born approx. 1882). Sarah also houses a granddaughter Ella Pettit, 8 (who is obviously your GM, born in 1911.) Was this older Ella the one who married a Gifford? Sarah Spencer's 1920 household also includes a “stepson” Charlie, age 47. None of the 3 adults has any occupation listed. There may be some errors here, but the way the clerk wrote it, the surnames of Charlie and the older Ella were both Spencer (but, could Charlie actually be a son in LAW, instead of STEP-son?) I tried to back up to the 1910 C., but there is no Sarah Spencer anywhere near age 63. The Millville Historical Society surely has several obituaries you need -- and – -I think - - suggests only nominal donations (maybe $5 per request?) Write to them at 200 E. Main St., Millville NJ 08332 or phone 856-825-7000, extension 275. They do not have e-mail. MHS has Millville census records from 1830 - 1880; obituary files from 1936-1974; Mt. Pleasant Cemetery records -- and many surprises. If you have any willing co-researcher within reasonable distance, their 2nd and Main St. headquarters is open from 1 to 4 on Sundays and Wednesdays -- but phone first, as they have only a few volunteers (who might be ill and need to close). You can also access the NJ Census at many historical societies and libraries, OR your nearest Mormon center in any nation (Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints). You may also pay for a subscription to Ancestry.com or HeritageQuest, to access the Census and more. Your library might even have HQ at no charge for members, or an Ancestry subscription you can use on the premises. -- Delaware Dolores (Langley)

    3. I made the trip to to Mount Pleasant in Mvl and found the grave of my Margaret Langley Gifford Sheppard. She was born Jy 10, 1853 and d. Jy 30, 1921. Her stone says she was wife of John W. I really think these are all Giffords, not Sheppards (they just let my Margaret "in" because she was mother of some Giffords.) ----Original Message Follows---- From: "leslie" <[email protected]> To: "Dol Sol" <[email protected]>,"NJCumber" <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [NJCUMBER] Gifford-Hann-Spencer-Pettit-Langley (attn. Why can't they MERGE and get it over with???? I am wondering if this Ravyn even saw what I wrote, since apparently some msgs. go to just one group. Also, did you not post your msg. below to NJ-Cumberland, instead of just me? Ravyn, or someone else, might help with Hann and these other names if it's posted; but as I said, I only was concerned about this one Gifford and thought i'd help out, since she apparently has not looked at the various census. Have you? As of today, I started going right to the "live" NJ-Cumberland site, posting there if I have something to say, then hoping that it gets to the "list" also. ----Original Message Follows---- From: "leslie" <[email protected]> To: "Dol Sol" <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [NJCUMBER] Gifford-Hann-Spencer-Pettit-Langley (attn. Ravyn) Ravyn, you claim to have “anecdotal” info on many Cumberland County surnames you recently mentioned.
