I just received a reply from someone else that said that they had some old photographs from that studio as well, but didn’t know the first name of the photographer. Now that I think about it, I think I have some more in my great grandmother’s photograph album that say W.E. Bridgeton. I will have to look. (That name sounded familiar when you said it, but I just didn’t put the two and two together until now.) Now I’m really curious to find out who this guy is. This picture is only about a half an inch long, and it looks extremely old. I can barely read the words. But like I told the other lady that I am writing to that since I worked with college students for almost five years, I can read almost anything! Well, to help you with dates if I can… G.W. was born c.a. 1844. So, my guess is that mine is when he was much older like possible 1880’s, because he married someone from New Jersey in 1874, and that would be the only reason for him to be in New Jersey if that makes sense since he lived in Illinois. William ALEXANDER was born before 1810 but after 1803. So, it could be either one of the two men. I’d love for it to be William, but I only have few pictures of G.W. when he was younger. It’s too bad that the three of us couldn’t compare photographs.

Service was a photographer in Bridgeton in the mid- to late- 1800's. My family having lived in the Bridgeton area for many years, I have many old photos that are marked like this. I believe that the ones marked just "Service, Bridgeton, NJ" are the older ones. I also have some that are marked "The Bridgeton Photograph Gallery, Photographer, W.E. Service, No. 71 Commerce St., Bridgeton, N.J." I'm sorry I can't give you exact dates on when he was in business and what marks he used when -- I'd like to know that myself to help date my photos more precisely. Barbara

I have a picture that says, “Service Bridgeton, N.J.”. How would I know what type of service this man served? It says on the back of the picture, “Here is the dady of this herd”. I think that it’s my great grandfather, George Washington ALEXANDER, because we have another picture of him wearing the same coat, and that is the name that is written on the back. However, this service picture could also be the father of George. So, I am anxious to see where I might find service records dating back to the civil war. Thank you to all in advance!
I can't seem to find any information on Cornelia Campbell b 3-11-1840 married to James Rockhill Headley BEFORE her marriage. She may have been born in Cedarville, NJ. Family legend has her related to the Campbells of soup fame. I've tried all kinds of name variations but get nowhere. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Go to _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) and click on "search for ancestors". Type in Samuel Horton's name, then US as country, and New Jersey (NJ) as state.
