I found that they were married on 17 NOV 1785 in Cumb. Co. N. J. from Charles's ancestry world tree tree. (http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=sink&id=I18850) I've found that his info isn't 100% accurate, but it's a good starting place. Also, other historical societies might have them. Lummis Library has them, but a non-working fiche printer. The NJ Historical Society has volumes 1 and 2 on fiche (in Newark, NJ). That's all I have found so far, but I haven't really been looking. -andrea On 7/26/05, Orville Smith <[email protected]> wrote: > Where can I find "Sheppard's Folders" on the internet? > > > ============================== > View and search Historical Newspapers. Sorry, my email got sent before I finished what I was writing about abbreviations in the Sheppard collection. Here are some of the definitions I have figured out. I know Sheppard referred to his own volumes, and also to local records such as vital records or wills. do., do 517 = ditto, p. 517 [in other words, that reference is in the same volume as the previously mentioned one] K, 127 = volume K of Sheppard's own volumes. He created volumes of information copied from cemeteries, church records, etc. and then created file folders by surname based on his own volumes. M.H., XV, 516 = M.H. is My History. Sheppard's collection is called M.H. & G. (My History and Genealogy). XV= volume XV of his many volumes. 516 = the page number in vol. XV. db = I am not sure what db stands for Keb. or Heb. = don't know. Mary A. MOORE, b July 10, 1825 (M.K.SV,525) Maybe M.K. is M.H. SV is probably Salem Vital. He often quotes Mrs. Mary Clayton, as Mrs. M. C. and and he quotes R. B. Potter, both of whom copied cemetery records, along with Sheppard. Mary E. V. Hill

John, Have you read Charles Sheppard's handwritten manuscript called the Sheppard Papers? (is that the official name? anyone?) It details family trees and such in the cumberland/salem/gloucester area. At the Lummis Library they have it on fiche (bad fiche printer..) and they have the original (?) or at least a hard copy at Vineland (I'm told) and a fiche too probably. I saw the one at Lummis and it's indexed by family for the tree and then there's a "notebook" section where he writes things about the people and then there are #'s and they reference each other (ie see entry #125). I'm descended from Sarah Fithian, daughter of Jonathan Fithian and Sarah Moore. Sarah married Thomas Bateman (1699-1759). I found the Charles Shepard manuscript invaluable. Perhaps it can help you. Has my 7th great grandmother Sarah Fithian come up in your research? -andrea On 7/18/05, [email protected] <[email protected]> wrote: > Greetings All, > > My name is John Fea and I teach American history at Messiah College in > Grantham, PA (near Harrisburg). Greetings All, My name is John Fea and I teach American history at Messiah College in Grantham, PA (near Harrisburg). I am completing a biography of Philip Vickers Fithian and could use some genealogical help. I benefited a great deal from the members of this list while I was in the early stages of my research back in 1999-2000 and I have come to place where I once again need to rely on your expertise. Any help would be much appreciated. I am trying to trace the maternal side of PVF's family and am having little luck. I know that Philip's father married Hannah Vickers in 1746, but with the exception of a few wills, I have been unable to gather any uinformation on the Vickers who lived in Fairfield and Greenwich during the 18th century. It seems that the original settler to the area, Philip Vickers, came to Fairfield (New England Town) at the turn of the 18th century and died about 1703. I believe that he descended from (or near) Fairfield, CT, but that is about it. Perhaps his last name was Vicars or Vicary. Does anybody know anything about Hannah's roots? Thanks. John Fea, Ph.D Professor of History Messiah College One College Avenue Grantham, PA 17027 [email protected] [email protected]
Tricia, Have you been to the Lummis Library in Greenwich? I recommend you look at the handwritten book/manuscript on fiche (they have the hard copy and a fiche at Vineland Hist. Society.. the fiche printer at Lummis is on the fritz.. but it's open both weekend days and Vineland's not) commonly referred to as the Charles Sheppard Papers. (I said that and showed her a handwritten page I had and she knew what I was talking about at Lummis). Mr. Sheppard listed a lot of families with trees and what happened to them. He probably included your family as there were a bunch of Woodruffs back then. If you are looking for descendants and not ancestors.. You could trace them through the cenus until 1930 (last census year) and then see if any males are still alive and in the phonebook (easier to find than females). It worked for me. I found my 80 yr old second cousin that way :) -andrea On 18 Jul 2005 11:56:07 -0600, [email protected] <[email protected]> wrote: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: woodruff, mulford > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/wQB.2ACE/1124 > > Message Board Post: > > Am looking for the family of Deborah Mulford who married David Woodruff in > Salem NJ about 1801.
