    3. Hi List, Thanks for all the helpful information! I am still a little dazed and confused but you enlightened me—I think! I have found my gg grandfather’s brother, Samuel French. He owned the French/Woodstown Hotel in Salem Co. for many years. Another French (Joseph G. French) owned the French Hotel in Penns Neck. I don’t know if they were closely related or not. They all seemed to have the same names in those days. In his May 28, 1909 obit it says he was born in Haddonfield. He was about 8 years younger than my gg grandfather Jacob R. French. Jacob went west in 1849 and ended up in Portland, Oregon where my branch was started (thank goodness). But much of the information was lost with the distance between families. I knew that Jacob had gone home to visit in 1894 and the story was passed on in the family that he visited his brother’s hotel and ordered dinner -- unrecognized for much of it and then (maybe during dessert….) he was recognized and a great reunion ensued. Many of you gave me the clues to go from Gloucester to Camden to Salem! I found him in the 1880 census. I have been trying to find out what happened to the females in the family, but that is hard going! I have read the French family history by Howard Barclay French but he refers to places in vague generalities which added to my confusion. Also, much of his book was based on members replying to his queries and it seems that this branch of the family did not give him much feedback. Thanks for all your help! Anyone researching the French family of Camden/Gloucester/Salem New Jersey? I would love to hear from you! Regards! Jan
