Your best bet is to seach an 1860 census online for Nelson when it becomes available. (such as ancestry.com) Sea Captains were just that -- in charge of sailing vessels that plied the oceans delivering goods, people, emigrants, livestock, etc. I imagine a search for a Maritime museum or Historical Society history books would provide more detail on Sea Captains.
