I am doing genealogy research on my family and recently wrote to the Colestown Cemetery on April 22, 2002 for records on my ancestors who I believe to be buried there. I sent them my list of ancestors (Beagary, Slim, Field, Landers Lupton) with dates and just got a letter back in yesterday's mail charging me $100.00 for genealogy they claimed they had done. I never authorized them to do genealogy that I would have to pay for, in fact this is the first cemetery I have encountered that charged for records. I mainly have dealt with cemeteries in Massachusetts that charge nothing for this. I am on the Rootsweb E-mail mailing list for Camden, NJ and related this to the list and have gotten probably over 50 replies so far to my query about Colestown Cemetery. I asked the list if someone in the area could call Colestown to find out what they charge. I learned that they charge $25.00 per half hour to look in their records so I presume it took them four hours to look mine up. I have since learned through my mailing list that I can easily get these Colestown cemetery records elsewhere and I will. What I am now most interested in is who is watching over these cemeteries and can they legally charge anything they want to? Someone on this list suggested that this cemetery recently changed hands and in the past never charged for any records. Thanks for listening. Jacqueline Sleeper Russell PS: Here is the contents of the letter I received from Colestown. May 16, 2002 Dear Mrs. Russell, I have completed your genealogy, however there will be a charge of $100.00 dollars. Your genealogy will be sent to you upon receipt of yor check. respectively, Stacy A. Garlanger ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++=
