My gr, grandmother's sister, Elizabeth Spreng married Ferdinand Laird in Camden ca1895(?). I have the year from census reports, but not at my reach now. They had at least 9 or ten children and lived in Magnolia, Camden County, NJ sometime in the early 1900's. My father (second cousins) went to school with some of the Laird kids. Ferdinand may have been a son of Granville Laird. I think they were in Philadelphia previous to Camden....as were the Sprengs. Dennis E. Cox Southern NJ
I am researching the following SIRIS, KIBLITZKY/BROWN family information. Any help is very appreciated! Aaron (aka Harris) SIRIS was born about 1854 to Josef and Chany and immigrated from the Podolya region of Ukraine to NYC approximately 1890. After bringing over the rest of his SIRIS family in 1892: Chaje Feige SHAFER - Aaron's wife Isador Samuel SIRIS - oldest son Chana/Anna SIRIS - oldest daughter AND her new husband, Samuel KIBLITZKY (KIBLITZKY surname later changed to KIBLISKY.. then to KILBY) Jacob Herman SIRIS - son Harry L. SIRIS - son Katie SIRIS - youngest daughter Joine/Leon/George SIRIS - youngest son ... they relocated to Camden (1896), Union (1897), Woodbine (1897-1900) {all in NJ}, then Philadelphia {PA}, and later to NJ again in Trenton. Anna SIRIS and husband, Samuel KIBLITZKY, met and married in "Russia" (Ukraine). Samuel was born in 1875 Ukraine (Gajsin, Podolya region?). Samuel's parents, Paul (Poltie/Nicolas) and Fanny, divorced in "Russia" and each remarried. One of Paul's 2 or 3 children from his 2nd marriage, immigrated to the United States in the early 1900's and changed his name to Charlie BROWN (yes.. this is true!). Charlie lived for a time in Trenton, NJ (1920-1930's). This is the last information I have found on Charlie BROWN and a great dissappointment, believe me. Thank you in advance... Is there anyone on this list from Collingswood, New Jersey"? Vickie
Reciently I discovered that my G-Great Grandfather, Charles H. Giffins, is buried in Berlin Cemetary! This is a real breakthrough for me because there was some confusion on the spelling of the last name. My Great grandmother was illiterate, so until we got some sort of confermation, we didn't know what the right spelling was. The only problem now is that in the Striker book of NJ Regiments his last name is listed as Giffen. He served in the 23 NJ in Co.K. His headstone says Giffins. I'm now waiting on his death certificate. If anyone has any connection to either of these last names please drop me a line. Thanks, Michael Conley.
Mike, Don't recall if we have discussed this surname previously or not. I have been in touch with quite a few Githens researchers. Will forward your email to them. There are various spellings on this name. Whether they are all the same name or not is a big question. One particular problem I have had to deal with is my 3rd G.Grandmother who was Mary Grapevine of whom one researcher has informed me that the Grapevine name was changed from Giffins/Githins when they arrived from Ireland. The really interesting thing on her is that quite a few descendants have family lore that Mary Grapevine was an indian. Wes Hayman
I didn't have Sarah Borton, but do have her parents as William Borton & Parmelia Sitly. I don't have any way of confirming the proper spelling of her last name. I do have William Borton's ancestry back to William Borton b. abt. 1557 in case this may be of help. The Free Library of Philadelphia occassionally has free genealogy classes. http://www.library.phila.gov/ The Federal Archives Branch in Philadelphia also sometimes has free genealogy classes. http://www.nara.gov/regional/philacc.html And the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania sometimes has genealogy classes. http://www.libertynet.org/gspa/ Check with the local genealogical or historical society near you. Sometimes they have genealogy classes as well, but are often not good at publicizing this information outside of their membership. Someone will tell you some appropriate information, I'm sure, but what I would suggest is that everyone give you their own favorite tip. My most productive tip suggestion is, believe it or not, Ask others for suggestions... Some things that others have suggested have never crossed my mind, but it is amazing how much good people have done me! And believe me when I say this is no cop out. I am no dope and have untangled some of the knottiest problems through reasoning alone, based on paltry data. Still... Ask others for suggestions...
