I am new to this list. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could look in the Camden City Directories from 1919 to 1921 for any listings for the last name DIKTER. Thanks, Joel Weiner

Hi Everyone - Last night, I was flipping through channels and on the History channel I caught about the last 1/2 hour of a show called "Ellis Island", it mad mention of something called The 1910 Census of Foreigners Living in America. Has anyone ever heard of this census? I'm thinking this might also be a very useful census for anyone with relatives who came through Ellis Island. Take care - Deb
Hi Everyone - I'm attempting to thank personally, but the amount of kindness has made that impossible! In about 24 hours since I posted it, I have had over 300 responses from the various lists my message went out to. I have had list owners dig in their archives, people who I've never really "corresponded" with personally sending me links, and people who have done look-ups and translations for me resend it ALL! I say ALL because I do believe every census look-up I've ever asked for has been resent. I would like to thank everyone for all their kindness and generosity, it really restores one's faith in light of what has happened in recent months. If I do not respond with a thank you personally, please forgive me, as I'm overwhelmed by the response to my recent plight! On another note, I thought I would share, that not one response has come in telling me how much of an idiot I was, and that, is greatly appreciated as I already know, believe me, lesson learned! Every resent item has been downloaded to the appropriate family file on my hard drive and backed up on disc. Again, I thank all of you from the bottom of my heart. It has really thrilled me since some of those lost e mails were from 4 to 6 months ago! Take care - Deb
I agree with Deborah Johnson, I don't think it hurts getting information that perhaps should be on a neighboring county mailing list. I'm from Fairfield County, Connecticut and although I belong to the Fairfield County List, I belong to the New Haven and Hartford Counties Lists as well since some issues know no county line. I know my state fairly well, but I don't know squat about New Jersey and especially Southern New Jersey and specifically Camden County and those counties immediately surrounding Camden. What limited information I have on the movements of my ancestors places a Great-aunt Mary Elizabeth Donnelly somewhere in the greater Camden area in the summer of 1870. Her father James Emmett Donnelly arrived in Philadelphia from Ireland sometime around 1858-60, but moved up to Connecticut before the Civil War, but I know at least one brother arrived before he did in Philly. Perhaps when Mary Elizabeth traveled down from Bridgeport, CT to Camden at the age of 17 to visit cousins they didn't actually live in Camden, but rather the train or stagecoach stopped in Camden but they lived in a town in a neighboring county, that didn't have a train or coach stop or perhaps, her relatives met her there and then they traveled via ferry to Philly. I appreciate MaisieAnn for posting what she has on the census lists in New Jersey. As my ancestors were Irish born as were their cousins, I'm looking for people who were from Ireland on the lists and I've been copying those Irish to my own list. I have a few people who might be possibilities, but unfortunately, I've been copying MaisieAnn for only a year or so and I don't think I have any from Camden county. I hope she does return to Camden County or someone else has been copying her posts and could give me the Camden lists so I can copy the Irish names. Ed Hagerty Monroe, CT
Hello Everyone - I had a major computer failure today. :-( Major crash, lost everything that wasn't backed up on disc. In a nutshell, I use Earthlink 5.0, which allows me to download messages to my hard drive, I had kept all of these in my "mailbox" in specific folders, not very smart, unless I had made a back up, which I didn't, I know, stupid, stupid, stupid. Anyway, earthlink spent about two hours, trying many different things to try to pull them up on the server, no such luck, which is why I'm now writing this. I realize you may not still have it, but, I figure, it's worth a shot. If you have ever sent me anything, either on or off list with regard to a look-up I asked for, translations, etc., for any of the following surnames, please, please, resend it if you have it! I'm sending this e mail to every list I'm on in one fell swoop, so, please read through the whole thing! New Jersey - Camden - Bennett/Keller New Jersey Burlington - Mingin/Long Delaware - Bennett Denmark - Schall, Matthiesen, Christensen Cheshire - Battersby/Gee, anything in regard to the Silk Mills Nordhein-Westfalen - Loelhoeffel von Loewensprung, Ewald, Hoffman, Friese, Roggon, Stuckas, Seidensticker. Karl-Heinz, those other pages have not yet arrived from Germany yet, I'm attempting to write them a letter in German, as the last phone call cost me $54.00! Again, I apologize for my stupidity and I will be checking the archives as well, both those won't give me anything anyone sent me off list, some won't give me anything real recent either. Take care - Deb --- Deborah Johnson --- [email protected] --- EarthLink: The #1 provider of the Real Internet.

I realize that others on this list have the best intentions and do alot of work posting Burlington County data, but I am subscribed to the list because of an interest in Camden County genealogy. I don't agree with the theory that the counties are close--why not publish Philadelphia and Gloucester data as well. Once in a while other topics and areas are fine, but the Burlington County messages are constant. I regret that I will have to unsubscribe. Perhaps the Burlington County list has more Camden County postings.
I've been on this list for a bit now, and I must say, the only Burlington County info I receive on the Camden List is the Census info, which, by the way, I receive on the Burlington, Salem, Cumberland and Gloucester Lists also. Do I mind reading it on one list and then hitting delete on all the other lists? Not a bit. Perhaps I missed something where the theory of the counties being so close was mentioned, however, I have this theory, families did in fact move around back then, perhaps you have them in 1870 in Camden County, yet, in 1860 they were in Burlington County, or perhaps the parents of one spouse were in one county while the "married couple" in another. I personally, have a line where they were in Burlington County in 1892, yet in Cumberland County by 1900. If it is this census posting on various lists that is the issue, I for one applaud MaisieAnn for her efforts to include those closely related Southern New Jersey Counties, and I also applaud the list owner for allowing her to do this. Think about this, you're digging and digging for family you're positive lived in Camden County in 1860 (I'm using this year because that's the year of the census being posted), but you can't find them, then, all of a sudden, one day, you scroll through the 1860 Burlington County census and wow, there they are, had she kept this post strictly to the Burlington List, and you weren't on that list, you would still be digging, wouldn't you? Thank you MaisieAnn, for posting this information on various lists, as I said earlier, I receive this post 5 times a day, I read it once and delete the rest, not a problem, in fact, very easily done! I would hate to see anyone un subscribe simply for this reason, but, if you feel that's what you must do, then, good luck with all your searches, please come back if you change your mind. While I'm writing, if anyone can find a connection of William MINGIN and Emma LONG, in this county prior to 1892, either married, or single, I'd be forever grateful, I can place them in Florence, Burlington County, NJ, in 1892 with the birth of their son, but can find nothing else. I believe that they were both born about 1870, as there was one birth in 1919. On a map from 1877 I find a Home for Friendless Children between Liberty and Mechanic's Streets. It is renamed Orphan Home on a 1905 map I have. My question, would anyone know if records exist for such a place, and where I might go for the records? Thank you, Shirley

Hello New Jersey Researchers, I have started the update to the New Jersey USGenWeb web site. You can find the site at: <http://www.virtualnewarknj.com/gennj/subindex.htm> or <http://www.rootsweb.com/~njgenweb/subindex.htm> I've decided to have a main site and a mirror site. The sites will be identical but in case one server is down you can always check the other. At the site you will find a reorganization of the old information along with some new information. I'd like your input to add more information to the site. We will do that one section at a time, so please review the following section and email me with any additions you have: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~njgenweb/research/vitals/index.htm> Please remember this is the state site and all information should be about the entire state not just a single county (i.e. where you would find birth records for the entire state). The New Jersey Historical Society is about to open their new web site. I don't know what will be there or if they followed our suggestions but we will find out this month. The address for the site is: <http://www.jerseyhistory.org/> Thank You, Glenn G. Geisheimer <[email protected]> NJ State Coordinator USGenWeb Project <http://www.virtualnewarknj.com/gennj/> <http://www.rootsweb.com/~njgenweb/index.html>
