Hi. Please note that I have a request in this post for partial 1870 Census data... Here is the 1860 Census entry for John STOCKHAM and Family. John is my g,g-grandfather, and John E. is my g-grandfather. Does anyone have any relevant database that would help me figure out a bit about Mary, John's wife, and about her mother, Elizabeth ROGERS? The lumber firm that John and his brother Charles operated in Camden was in existence, according to George Reeser Prowell, from 1856 until he retired in 1882, and went back to Maryland (though he was later buried at Colestown, in NJ). It here lists Mary as born Penna, but I have heard elsewhere, that she was actually born Ulster, Ireland, and was of Scottish background. This bit of census was the first indication that she was not born in one of the United States Ulsters. 1860 South Ward City of Camden Census Enumerated June 23rd 1860 316 318 John Stockham 43 M Lumber Merchant PE $100 Born Pa Mary 32 F Born Pa Charles 9 M Born Pa John E 4 M Born NJ Ella 1 F Born NJ Elizabeth Rogers 55 F Born Ireland Mary Roseler 18 F Servant Born Germany I have 1870 in part -- I am hoping someone can fill me in on what I do not show for 1870, as I obtained this information in my early days of family history research... Suzanne, I was very excited when I saw your post about the sloop "Friendship," that is until I checked the date. I have an ancestor, Arthur POWELL who appears in Gloucester County in the 1690s and in Flushing Long Island, NY in 1698, then back to Gloucester County. I don't know where he was before that. But, I have found an Arthur POWELL on the ship "Friendship," leaving Barbados 9 Aug 1679 - bound for London. It is my speculation that he did not go all the way to London, but got off at one of the American ports. I was hoping that your receipt would place the "Friendship" in Gloucester County, but alas the time is too late. Thanks for sharing, I hope you will keep the list posted as you learn more. My husband and I found a receipt dated 1796 in a box of things from his mother's estate. John Schultze wrote that he owed David Chamberlain for work on the sloop the Friendship. The bottom part of the paper is David Chamberlain writing in 1797 that he had received payment in full. Does anyone have any idea of how I can research this? Neither name is known to my family yet. I have contacted the Salem Maritime Museum and the Maritime Museum on Long Island. They are both searching for me. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks! Suzanne
We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We just posted information about the history of the poorhouse in CAMDEN & GLOUCESTER Counties. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on NEW JERSEY on the table of states. Just below the picture, in the section on LOCAL NOTES, you will find the entry marked with a big yellow NEW arrow. (NOTE: If you have visited the site recently, you may have to click on REFRESH on your browser to see the new information.) There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

I thought this might be helpful for those interested in "Homes for Friendless Children". As I did visit the storage room and found quite a large collection of records there. The address now: Northern Home for Children 5301 Ridge Avenue Philadelphia, PA 19128 Phone: 215-482-1423 Taken from "History of Philadelphia". The Northern Home for Friendless Children was chartered Jan. 25, 1854. Mrs. E.E.Hutter and other ladies were prominent in originating this charity. They succeeded in obtaining a lot of ground extending from Twenty-second to Twenty third Streets, and from Brown to Parrish Streets. The object was to receive and befriend "destitute and neglected children, ignorant or forsaken, little boys or girls under twelve years of age." It was not necessary that they should be orphans. Here, in 1855, was erected a very large and imposing building, sufficient to accommodate a considerable number of children. In later years, after the war of the Rebellion had commenced a large adjoining building on Twenty-third and Parrish Streets was erected. Here was maintained the Soldiers' Orphans' Institute, the inmates being supported by the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. I did visit the orginal location and found a school now at the site, interestly they had some art work placed within the school building that I feel must have come from the orginial buildings. When I asked about the items, no one seem to know where they came from.
