Hi List, Thanks for all the helpful information! I am still a little dazed and confused but you enlightened meI think! I have found my gg grandfathers brother, Samuel French. He owned the French/Woodstown Hotel in Salem Co. for many years. Another French (Joseph G. French) owned the French Hotel in Penns Neck. I dont know if they were closely related or not. They all seemed to have the same names in those days. In his May 28, 1909 obit it says he was born in Haddonfield. He was about 8 years younger than my gg grandfather Jacob R. French. Jacob went west in 1849 and ended up in Portland, Oregon where my branch was started (thank goodness). But much of the information was lost with the distance between families. I knew that Jacob had gone home to visit in 1894 and the story was passed on in the family that he visited his brothers hotel and ordered dinner -- unrecognized for much of it and then (maybe during dessert .) he was recognized and a great reunion ensued. Many of you gave me the clues to go from Gloucester to Camden to Salem! I found him in the 1880 census. I have been trying to find out what happened to the females in the family, but that is hard going! I have read the French family history by Howard Barclay French but he refers to places in vague generalities which added to my confusion. Also, much of his book was based on members replying to his queries and it seems that this branch of the family did not give him much feedback. Thanks for all your help! Anyone researching the French family of Camden/Gloucester/Salem New Jersey? I would love to hear from you! Regards! Jan

Jan- They were all in Gloucester County originally until Camden County was formed from Gloucester County in 1844. Gloucester City is now in Camden County just below Camden City (along the Delaware River). Haddonfield is also in Camden County but not especially near Gloucester City (not too far either though). Heading east from Camden City you will come to Collingswood, then Haddon Township (Westmont) and then Haddonfield. Joan <---who lives in Gloucester Township which is in Camden County but isn't the same thing as Gloucester City OR Gloucester County. Confused yet? ;-)
Hello List, Okay now I'm attempting to tackle a diff. branch of my Schemelia's. I need a look up for Mary A. Tiedeken, b. 1887 in Gloucester City, NJ. I believe her parents may be Henry Tiedeken born in PA. and Margaret Noble also born in PA. She married William H. Schemelia on Dec 30, 1905. poss. Camden. Thanks, Lora

Thanks, everybody, for sharing all the Ancestry experiences, information, links, things to look for, and other places to look, signing up process, etc. Looking for PRALL and PETTY (11 spellings possible) in West Jersey, and North Jersey Counties *before* 1850. And anything which sounds like MATTHIAS, Dutch or English spelling. There's even a link in there to applegate before 1750, but first I have to document the predeeding folks. Ruth in GA
Before I subscribe to Ancestry, I would like to know of other NJ researchers experience with early 19th century and *before* information available on Ancestry. >From 1700 to 1850. My explorations during free visits were frustrating, to say the least. My impression is that they don't cover all the counties. Am I correct? Would I be better off sticking with LDS? And finding the reference books mentioned on the message boards? Like everyone, I want to point my time and money in the right directions. I welcome hearing about your experiences. Ruth in GA

Years ago, my mother used to sing a song about the Cooper Hospital maternity ward. Below is the only remembered phrase. Could someone please complete the song for me? "Today is the day they give babies away at the Cooper maternity. If you know any ladies who want any babies just send them around to me. We have blondes with curly hair. Redheads and Brunettes will all be there." Thank you so much, Linda Nichols originally of Camden and born at Cooper :)

The site listed below gets some materials that it either sells outright or auctions off, depending. I invite you to visit it, not only because of the opportunity of purchase (which would amount to a mere ad, even though I do not benefit from telling you of it), but because it offers images that are very nice, and quite downloadable, ***for free***. Here is one I discovered for Camden County. I do not intend to keep the images for long, so if you know the person this goes to, please contact them just as soon as you can, OK? First, the URL, then the transcription I made: http://shop.auctionwatch.com/foolishlydetermined/store.html It is a search engine. I entered surnames (did not find anything that way) and I entered words such as certificate, court, marriage, death, etc. Here is what I found for Camden County...
