If I were to take a train into NJ with the idea of doing research in Camden, could someone please advise me of the nearest city as listed below? Also, would a rental car then be best or are there other means of convenient, reasonably priced transportation? Since I will be there overnight, I would also appreciate motel/hotel suggestions. Finally, what problems, if any, will I have as a result of 911? Thank you, Pat P.S. I have added the PA stops in the event that a station there would be more appropriate. 3. Dear Taffy, When you asked if me to look this up, you included everything but the name of the couple you are looking for. If the name is Nichols, I did find them. However, ED 1, sheet 5, line 30 says Audubon Borough, not Camden City. Don't know if you are a local, but Audubon is right next to Camden, and may have been part of it at that time, I don't know. Line 30 did refer to the address of 717 Third Avenue, so here is the info: Nichols, Wm. G, Head, owns with a mortgage, M, W, 52, married, reads, writes, & speaks English, born NJ, father born NJ, mother born NJ, bolter at shipyard for wages. Nichols, Alice E, wife, F, W, 52, married, reads, writes & speaks English, born NJ, father born NJ, mother born NJ, no occupation listed. Hope this helps! Janet T. When you can't find where a couple married who live in South Jersey you might want to consider Elkton, MD. It is the "Gretna Green" of this part of the country. Many couples went to Elkton to got married. Joan

    1. [NJCAMDEN] US Coast Guard Base @ Gloucester City
    2. Janet T. Smith
    3. Just ran across something I thought was interesting, and decided to share it with the list. Having lived all my life in Gloucester City (except for 2 years in Woodbury as a newly wed), I'm surprised that I never heard about this particular use of what I always called the Coast Guard Station, and my parents always called the Immigration Station. When I was a kid, Gloucester had a USCG base on the Delaware River, which had started its life as an immigration station. While browsing the 1920 census for Gloucester City, I found a page that listed 19 names of the "men quartered in barracks at Gloucester City, NJ, at the US Naval Air Craft Station". It's the "Naval Air Craft Station" that took me completely by surprise. This was 1920, just 2 years after the end of WWI, and airplanes just weren't an everyday occurrence in America at that time, were they? With all the stories I heard from my parents and grandparents about Gloucester City, I just would have expected to have heard about this before now. Does anyone else have any info about it? I'll post the names just in case they can be of some help to anyone. McAvoy, Lloyd L., head, M, W, marital status and age unknown, b. If she was a single woman living alone, she might be listed by her name, otherwise the census is searchable with head of household's name only. Joan
