Example: If you want to look at Collingswood, ED98, you have to select Camden, ED57. etc.. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Malcolm Schalick Sharp http://sharp.rootsweb.com -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ----- Original Message ----- From: Malcolm Sharp To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, May 21, 2002 9:36 AM Subject: [NJCAMDEN] 1930 Census Ancestry.com has put 1930 census images online. I was searching what I thought was Collingswood (ED #93-101) however the pages indicate "Camden City" and have streets that aren't in Collingswood ( e.g., Hillside, Fountain, Fremont). 2. Hello, The Cedar Grove Cemetery records are at the Camden County Historical Society. I have seen the registry of all the cemetery deeds-it has been reproduced and is chronological. The burial plot records are out for copying and as of several weeks ago are not yet back. I have no checked on them recently. Rick Franzen

    1. [NJCAMDEN] Naturalization
    2. Just to add to the issue of naturalization, I know in the case of some of my ancestors who came from Ireland, to naturalize or not, it wasn't so much as case of trying to blend in, not wanting the local community to know they were Irish, it was the case of being illiterate. Probably 80-90% of all Famine immigrants who came to America from 1845-1870 were illiterate, many like my HAGERTY ancestors, spoke Gaelic more often than English. The surname HAGERTY was written down by the immigration officials as HAGGERTY because that was the way it sounded with the thick brogue, you will rarely find the spelling HAGGERTY in Ireland, many other Irish names as well as those of other nationalities were butchered by the immigration clerks at the ports of entry and why, because most people coming in at the time were illiterate and didn't know any better. In our case it wasn't until the 1900 census(could have been the 1890 census, but that was lost in the fire) that you see the family name was corrected back to HAGERTY and the reason is simple, their children, the first generation American, were in their teens and twenties and literate and able to notify the census takers and everyone else they had been writing the name incorrectly. For some of the immigrants I think they didn't become citizens, because they believed when things got better at home in the old country they'd return, but illiteracy again was the primary reason why people didn't become naturalized citizens. Only the youngest brother of my Great-grandfather Hagerty ever became a citizen, because he was the only one who was learned to read and write. Until my Great-grandfather's death in 1901, his children read the Irish Echo to him and they had fun at times changing the stories around until he would eventually catch on and chase them around the house. Ed Hagerty

    1. [NJCAMDEN] John H Coulter, Gloucester City
    2. Kelly Furlong
    3. The only thing I am certain about my ggpa, John H Coulter's death, is that he was buried in Old St. Mary's Catholic Church in Gloucester City. An old listing in the Gloucester City Historical Society transcriptions of that cemetery [headstones no longer exist], shows he died Oct. 20, 1924. Direct communication with the church revealed this from their burial register: John H. Coulter died of 'xempt' right side on Sept. 20, 1924 and was buried on Sept. 24th. [The register did have his place of birth wrong]. A long while ago, I sent away to Trenton for a dc and it came back not found. I recently asked a RAOGK who was going to Trenton to look for his dc and she came back with a not found for 1923-1925. Could some kind soul check the Gloucester City death and burial records for the Sept 20's and Oct 20's of 1924 and see if he's there? I'm figuring the name got messed up somehow. His vitals were: Born 1/19/1875 in Shamokin, PA to Patrick Coulter and Elizabeth Wert. He was survived by dtr, Violet Coulter Gebert.

    3. Could anyone tell me where the records are kept for the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Gloucester City, and how I can get further information? More than a year ago I contacted the person I was told had the records for the cemetery, and asked what was necessary to obtain information about my grandparents who are buried there. I enclosed an SASE, but have never had a reply. I believe that my grandparent were probably quite poor, and could not afford grave stones or markers so I have nothing further to go on. They were Andrew C. Storms (1854-1926) and Annie Heard Storms (1862-?). Thanks for any leads. Ralph Forsaith ................ [email protected]
