This next phase includes posting finding aids and imaged collections linked to the browsable catalog unveiled a few months ago. The first round of on-line guides includes the following groups of records: Atlantic County Clerk's Office: http://www.njarchives.org/links/webcat/queries/catclerk.html Atlantic County Surrogate's Office: http://www.njarchives.org/links/webcat/queries/catsurro.html Department of Defense - Civil War: http://www.njarchives.org/links/webcat/queries/sedefen4.html Morris Canal: http://www.njarchives.org/links/webcat/queries/pcanalmo.html >From the pages listed above, link to the finding aid for a specific record series. Not all collections have guides, and some finding aids are simple listings of box or reel contents (e.g., county records on microfilm). However, in many cases you will find institutional histories, content notes, and item-level descriptions. As additional finding aids are posted, more and more research will be possible online or planned prior to a trip to the Archives. Of special note in yesterday's postings are two imaged collections: Civil War carte-de-visites (over 400) and Morris Canal Views from 1903. These images can be accessed through the Civil War and Morris Canal pages mentioned above via the record series, or directly through the Imaged Collections page at: http://www.njarchives.org/links/imgcollections.html Special thanks go to Archives staff members Veronica Meyer, Lois Bredlow and Joanne Nestor for their excellent work on refining pages, html mark-up and scanning images. Thanks also to DARM/Department staff Daniel Noonan and Richard Allen and our Division Director Karl Niederer for their ongoing support. Enjoy the site! We'll keep you posted on further developments. Best regards, Joseph R. Klett Chief of Archives P.S. Please forward to any relevant lists or bulletin boards. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ -- Michelle Tucker Chubenko Professional Genealogist http://mywebpages.comcast.net/famhist/michprogen.htm ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NJGenWeb: Genealogical Calendar of Events http://mywebpages.comcast.net/famhist/calendar.htm

FIELD who may be Brig. General JOHN JOSEPH ABERCROMBIE, possibly the brother of CHARLES' mother, ERNESTINE ABERCROMBIE (FIELD) and for fun tried CHARLES' name too and was well rewarded. 3. Could any responders please also consider a schooner owner and operator ca. 1810? I am looking for information on Samuel Spencer but I don't know his ship's name and there isn't a seaman's protection certificate on file for him. I don't know when or where he died but his family is in the city directories and census for the period around 1850-70. He was from Wilmington, DE but his eldest daughter was born in Camden in 1810 and two younger children born in PA (Philadelphia). All were raised in Camden. Thank you. 2. Pat
    3. Hello Elsa, I believe I can help you with the first part. If the property stands today, it should be fairly simple. Either you or someone who can do the research for you would need to go to the office in Camden where these records are kept. You will probably start at the Assessor's Office. There you should be able to get the volume and page where the information is stored in town records. I don't know whether all states keep these records in the same way but you will probably find these records in the office of the Town Clerk. Once there, you should be able to work your way back through previous owners--finding different volumes/pages for each-- until you find the person you are looking for. As these are public records, you should have no trouble getting the information. I have no idea if you can do this through the clerks there--for a fee. If not, you can either do it yourself or find someone in the area who can do it for you. Generally, when you are there in person you can request help as needed as most places are quite cooperative. Good luck Pat ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elsa Vorwerk" <elsavorwerk@mindspring.com> To: <NJCAMDEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 20, 2003 11:55 AM Subject: [NJCAMDEN] Camden property records, probate > I'm new to the Camden list, and this is my first > experience doing research in a New Jersey > county. 3. I'm new to the Camden list, and this is my first experience doing research in a New Jersey county. I'd be grateful to learn how one would obtain some sort of property record for a house owned/mortgaged (per 1900 census, located at 227 Cooper in Camden 1st Ward). Also, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me whether it's possible that probate (1917) might have occurred in Camden for a death occurring in NYC with (the above) property in Camden involved. A little background: Research on this person has been difficult owing to the fact that he was an actor, raised in Philadelphia, who worked on Broadway from the 1890s until his death in 1917, and living in Camden at least part of that time. To complicate matters further, he changed his name from Herman Charles Dexheimer to Charles D. Herman at some point, whether officially or not I do not know, but he married in Philadelphia in 1886 as Dexheimer and the family appears in 1900 as Herman, and I don't know what their names really were legally changed. I'll appreciate any insights you may have to offer, ~ Elsa in Allegany County, Maryland >
