In January of 2006 we initiated a "Shores" surname project through Family Tree DNA. This project is designed to provide irrefutable evidence of known and unknown family relatives. Through the technology of DNA testing, more specifically, y-line or males only testing, we can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt, purported connections to family, or as yet completely unknown connections. Indications from the first test results show that at least one branch of Shores originated and migrated within the northern European, British Isles--Britain, Ireland, Scotland, Iceland, Greenland, and Eastern Canada--all Viking populations, to North America. If you are a male Shores family member, or know of a cousin, uncle, father, grandfather that has a Shores surname, we ask that you please consider participating in this surname project. The following is just a sample of some of the branches from which we are seeking DNA participants: Samuel Shourds (Shores) - 1752 Chesterfield Twp. James Shores - 1752 married Hanna Watson John Shores - 1747 married Mary Moore, Mansfield Thomas - 1780 married Amey Ruckell We have a DNA representative from the following 2 branches but need others to participate: Jonathan Shores: born in 1794 in KY. Lived in Wilson Co., TN. Hiram Shores: born 1802 KY, lived in Wayne Co., IL. Married Tincy Ann Birks 1819. Those families named above and their respective individual branches represent merely the beginning of the project. There are other Shores families, for example, in Illinois, North Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky. We welcome any participant from any Shores branch. The web site will provide a brief insight to what we are doing and why. Please click on "FAQ about DNA testing…" on the lower left hand side of the site to get to some of the questions I am sure you have. On the upper left hand side of the web site you will see a tab to "Join this Group." If you click on this tab you will go to a page with more Shores information and the form to submit to a DNA y-line test. By joining our surname project, you can receive a discount on the cost of the test—as opposed to simply taking the test independently. While the 12 marker test gets you in the game, we would strongly suggest that you submit to the 37 marker y-line test. This can prove a common ancestor within the last 150-200 years without any doubt. In this way, we and our test matches on both sides of the Atlantic can work both backwards and forwards to connect to new ancestors and descendants that are matched with our results--hopefully locating the missing links to our Northern European origins. We will be attempting to contact as many male Shores surname candidates as we can. Not only do I hope you will join us in the project, we sincerely hope that you will contact all those in your Shores database to join in the project as well.
