You start with yourself as number 1, 2 is your father, 3 your mother, all even numbers behind that are the male ancestors and odd numbers the females. Doubling the number will arrive at the father for the preceding ancestor--number 4 is number 2's father and 5 his mother (number 1's paternal grandparents), etc. Joan
